february 2010 release ; a kind of bedroom overdubbed krautrock from the mind(s)/limb of iowa city’s ryan garbes ... never heard much raccoo-oo-oon myself, but this stuff has me kind of curious ; equal parts silver-applesian electro-funk and wobbly cluster-lineage bontempt ...

arbor 140 ryan garbes real sugar b/w the lights 7” ep

ryan garbes is the drummer of iowa city bands such as wet hair, dunebuggy, trash dog, and formerly raccoo-oo-oon. his recordings under his own name represent a unique brand of solo multi-track recording with a seamless integrity; through a skillful use of instrumentation and recording technique, garbes eschews notions of low fidelity for songs reminiscent of traditional american garage rock produced in the haze of an early 90’s uk aesthetic. genuine pop songs, cloaked in a comforting wash of reverb, as if lou reed had done a record for creation; more ecstatic than obstructed garbes’ voice is a refreshing one outside the continuum of the contemporary four-track bedroom pop.

in an edition of 300 copies with full color sleeve and printed labels by ryan.

november 2010 release ; superb split single, offering a track each by these two close-knit iowa city denizens (yes, i know jeff has gone off to vienna, then portland ; but he’ll stay an iowaan in his heart for many years to come) ...

wet hair (i.e. ryan garbes & shawn reed, previously dunebuggy, raccoo-oo-oon) drop a fine, electro-tinged processional (shades of garbes’ recent solo work) all but buried in post-production anti-gloss ... then jeff hits us with what is arguably his most fully-formed statement as rene hell yet, blending “church of anthrax” style electro-organ filigree, burnt suicide-lineage vocals, and white-noise / sheet-rock drums straight out of john bender’s “i don’t remember now / i don’t walk to talk about it” ... highly recommended !!!

with their recent split with naked on the vague acting as a dip into pop's waters; wet hair's follow up, in vogue spirit is practically a jump into the pool. the band's most accessible batch of tunes to date boil with krautrock rhythms, buzzing synths, and a new focus on vocals that has previously been mostly absent in the band's back catalog. it's not all motion and melody here though, the band still retains their experimental spirit, giving the record plenty of teeth to sink into any of those rising hooks. along with contemporaries lumerians and moon duo; in vogue spirit stands to gain a pretty solid footing in 2011's nod to the german progressive underground. the video for "echo lady" conveys the band's psychedelic aesthetic with shifting shots of glare and kaleidoscopic nature walks.
