| may 2010 release ; contemporary, grey-area edition of this vital 1977 collection of recordings made by james michael “jim” shepard between august 1974 and january 1977 ...
i am perhaps the least qualified person in existence to comment on shepard’s oeuvre, having missed out on the entirety of his 90’s “comeback” output (i.e. the “picking through the wreckage with a stick” lp on siltbreeze & assorted work with strapping fieldhands & his own v-3 project) ; that said, i’m hearing this now with fresh ears and goddamn it’s sounding more & more like the “missing link” between the crude, largely akron-based ohio art-punk scene of the 70s (see: pere ubu, electric eels, etc.) and the early “home recording” wave spurred on by r. stevie moore et.al ...
a dovetailing mix of lo-fi garage rock stomp & tiny electronic vignettes that’s almost too good to believe ... this has pretty much been my record of the summer ; highly recommended !!! |
| | originally released in a vanity pressing of 100 copies, this debut by james michael shepard & vertical slit has long been a holy grail item on many a collectors list. legend has it almost 1/4th of the pressing ended up in the hands of luminaries such as todd rundgren, john cale, robert fripp & peter hamill to name but a few.
musically this stands toe to toe with the cream of nurse with wound list prog obscuros and acid archives psych outsiders. imagine a bridge between magical power mako’s self titled debut lp & the decayes ich bin ein spieglei.
mastered in the furnace of the future so to bask in the luminous glow of the past. edition of 350. |
