| back in stock due to pop.dem. slightly more expensive but then again the pound is clobbering the dollar so bad right now you’re lucky i’m not asking ‘aan aarm && aa lleg’ for this gem so shut it...
second album (after 2002’s super lim-ed “chipped plastic”) from this 19-t aligned contin(g)ent-hopping electron-dam superstar. nice to hear some actual writing (i.e. not “melodically improvised”) mixed in with some really quite surprising programming chops (and that doesn’t just entail the drum-progging, much multi-layer automation bringing all that gurk from the back-to-foreground).
not to make hasty generalizations, but this has that perfect japanese feel to it (things us westerners would rule out on the get-go... i.e. sampled pitch-shifted horns, pitch-slurred chords, etc...) which is a nice change from the rigours of recent “logical™” electronica.
definite vibes from the köln-tronica stable (mom/sonig) with more than a bit of found-sound plunderphonia, weird instrumentation (banjo and electric saz?), and multi-fi sourcing... so if that’s your particular flagon of mead, wade deep on thine waters... |
| | | apart from his brief spell in south american politics, little is known about utabi hirokawa; he prefers to let his music speak for him, explaining the high presence of electronically synthesised burps, farts, groans, gurgles and swearwords mixed in with the future disco, 8-bit drum breakdowns, all-natural melodies and fm synthesis conjuring tricks on his forthcoming adaadat album. |
