third album from this free improv ensemble, including in its ranks family vineyard label boss eric weddle (who was nice enough to let greg, ben, and i stay @ his place when we dashed through chapel hill/carrboro/raleigh-durham a few years back...), a fine mix of contemporary eai stylings with more “classic” sounding/challenged-fidelity zonk and some fine, exploratory guitar passages ...

unstable ensemble
embers
fv37 cd

unstable ensemble's third full-length is their most finely honed improvisational gesture. embers is a menage of sax/guitar melody slivers shifting amongst crackling electronic tones and bowed percussion. existing amongst the shadowy fringes of north american improvisation since 1999, unstable ensemble's driftage has carried itself vast miles toward border crossings and large/no audiences to bestow ephemeral sound demonstrations as anti-placates to jazzbo tokers and noise-junkies. encapsulating many forces, embers surges with titanic electronic gale and absolute stillness while inner lyrical intricacies summon forlorn memories.

jason bivins - ian davis
benthic
fv20 cd

an old fashioned duet with no rules: electric guitarist jason bivins (unstable ensemble) and percussionist ian davis (micro-east collective, andrew voight, unstable ensemble) at the crossroads of american underground improvisation. outside the near blazing solos and stuttering riffery, there are the clusters of shiny metal, the rattles of trappings that poke out like shrapnel. imagine the entire incus roster growing up on dc hardcore (bivins) and the south carolina "chittlin' circuit" (davis). using few tricks and slight of hand movements, these two players take their instruments at the base level, volume and technique are pushed back and forth.

unstable ensemble
the liturgy of ghosts
fv16 cd

second album from this roving improvisational group stationed in raleigh, nc and bloomington, in. the liturgy of ghosts finds the ensemble mid-stride into their three-year life span by distinctively sculpting a towering tectonic merging of massive planes and melodic spikes that are absorbed into the molting. paying minute attention to the behavior of sound, and the haze of natural distortion, magnified white blots and the clicks and ticks of electronics, the ue blurs any lines between the notions of jazz, improvisation and new music. recorded live during their summer 2001 tour. marty belcher, soprano sax; jason bivins, electric guitar; joe donnelly, baritone sax; matt griffin, percussion; and eric weddle, no-input mixing board; plus guests darin gray, upright bass; richard patterson, flute/electronics; and paul bennett, soprano sax.

17 ways
fv5 cd

debut from unstable ensemble. hear where it all started. this is spacious, avant jazz in the realms of spontaneous music ensemble that carries frictional shards sharp enough to shave your globe off yee shoulders and across the valley. highly tempered and action packed with a sniff of underbelly, parker, bailey, and van halen. the unstable, multi-state make up is: jason bivins (electric guitar), marty belcher (soprano saxophone), joe donnelly (baritone saxophone), matt griffin (drums) and richard patterson (flute, vocalization). a continuing force to be reckoned with.
