toshiya tsunoda - kapotte muziek by...
korm plastics kp 3014
cdep

this is in many ways a break with tradition. normally toshiya tsunoda writes detailed descriptions of what he does per piece, but in this case it is just said he reworks an old cassette by kapotte muziek, called 4 stukken. this is the second break: up until now musicians involved in this series used live recordings, but tsunoda is the first to use a studio recording by kapotte muziek. like the cassette there are four parts, corresponding with the original release and they are reworked in the best tsunoda tradition, involving field recordings and strange and unusual on-site recordings.

the sound work of japanese artist toshiya tsunoda represents a radical rethinking of the concept of field recordings. rather than being documental or naturalistic, his pieces appear as unique music compositions concerned with the relation between space and cognition, rendering the vibration of objects audible, revealing with the meticulously scientific approach of a cataloguist, tsunoda captures the depth of the landscape, the vital breathing of things.

toshiya tsunoda is a yokohama, japan based artist who studied at the tokyo national university of fine art and music. since 1994, he has been operating the wrk label, which he co-founded with minoru sato. he has released work on staalplaat (nl), selektion (de) and hapna (sw). his work has been shown at the icc, tokyo, and the kawasaki city museum, among others.

nature strip press release...
naturestrip is proud to present the stunning new release by japanese sound artist, toshiya tsunoda. this is tsunoda’s first solo release on naturestrip having contributed to the overland compilation (ns3002). tsunoda offers us over 64 minutes of pure sonic pleasure. the 7 tracks span over a decade’s worth of sound exploration and showcase tsunoda’s talents.

scenery of decalcomania is the title of the album and in tsunoda’s own words “an event causes vibrations to travel through a certain space, and the vibrations affect this space. or to put it another way, a space is made to appear through vibration. a similar example; the stain of paint on textured paper is pressed into a new surface, a decalcomania.

tsunoda continues to innovate and challenge in his exploration of ‘vibrating spaces'. the subtle incorporation of electronics and audio filtering, featured on three of these pieces, are an added bonus for fans of tsunoda's work. set against the stark beauty of his field recordings, these 'manipulations' further emphasise the unique and perceptive appreciation of acoustic phenomenon for which tsunoda is known.

gorgeous collection of contemporary concrète/acoustmatic music in its tonal incarnation; starting with the immaculate original piece by the swiss sound-artist ralph steinbrüchel, then following suit(e) with versions by the necks’ chris abrahams, ben frost, 12k’s taylor deupree, oren ambarchi, and finally toshiya tsunoda (whom, it appears, recorded the piece as played back in a room using a microphone inside of a glass bottle!)
room40 press release...
in spring 2003 steinbrüchel received an invitation from the swiss music festival 'taktlos' in berne to contribute a track for their listening room equipped with a surround 5.1 sound system. during the two-day festival in november 2003 steinbrüchel's track 'opaque' was played back in cycle mode (among tracks from various other artists).

the listening room focused on the experience of being able to listen to music in a very quiet and large environment - unlikely to most home listening situations. additionally the possibility of working in surround gave the musicians a chance to create very special audio sculptures in the space.

this disc collects 'opaque' and reinterpretations by oren ambarchi (aus), taylor deupree (us), frost (aus), toshiya tsunoda (jp) and chris abrahams (nz).

each of the contributing artists was chosen for his unique working method (oren for his work with guitar, taylor for processed sounds, frost guitar feedback, toshiya for fieldrecordings and chris for piano). to make the remixes more varied and special, each artist received only three samples/soundfiles from the original track, but none of the artists have received the same samples or even have heard the original track by steinbrüchel before the release of the cd.

ful

"ful" by minoru sato and toshiya tsunoda is the recording of the different states of a sound which developed in and about a room over the period of 60 minutes. at this given time the resonating room was the material which was "played" by the recording.

with a contact microphone attached to the room's window, the sounds which derived from the changes of athospheric pressure were recorded. these sounds were amplified and at once replayed into the room resulting in a more or less intensified presence of feedback.

nature strip press release...
in late 2003 naturestrip invited four artists to submit pieces that would represent their recent work using field recordings. the ‘overland’ compilation collects these results and demonstrates the wide range of approaches and techniques used by each artist.

toshiya tsunoda’s work is internationally recognized for its unique and conceptually rigorous take on field recording. his releases on labels including sirr, hapna, intransitive, lucky kitchen and wrk, have established tsunoda as a key reference for any work done in this field. reclaimed land is an acoustic snapshot, recorded in heisei cho, yokosuka city in august 1998. the piece captures an immersive and rich environment, momentarily framed. the listener can become involved on a variety of levels, visualizing an imaginary context, or entering a pure sound world.

joel stern is a melbourne based sound artist and improviser, working with environmental recordings, electrical interference, modified microphones, amplified objects and simple feedback systems. his work moves freely between richly textural surface noise, investigations of acoustic space, and minute gestural detail. joel has released music on labels including groundfault, touch, impermanent, and twothousandand. his contribution to 'overland', was produced using binaural microphones, two bottles of soda water, damaged cables and speakers. listening with headphones is recommended.

tarab (eamon sprod) has been working on the fringes of the melbourne sound world for the past 6 years, exploring the interplay of field recordings and improvisation with found objects. tarab’s - of hollow traces, was constructed from a series of improvisations, in late 2003-early 2004. using a mixture of found objects, microphones, simple electronics and field recordings, to create a cyclic mixture of breathing resonate drones, static rustlings and scrapings.

lawrence english is writer, composer and artist based in brisbane, australia. working across a broad range of media art forms, english’s work is eclectic and characterises a long-term exploration of collage, audio/visual environments and found sound. his work on overland collects together a series of field recordings captured in tokyo and new york during june/july 2003, the resulting composition acting as an audio diary of sorts – a series of abstract reflections on the sound textures, people and spaces visited while on tour.
