in the early part of the summer of 2006 tomas korber travelled to graham halliwell’s home studio buried away in the depths of the norfolk countryside to record the sessions that would become the large glass.

the musicians came together in the months following well received solo albums, halliwell’s recorded delivery and korber’s effacement each receiving much praise in the end of 2005 reviews. together, the music they created retained the simplicity and sheer beauty of those albums, adding the immediacy of the improvised moment to create three fragile, elegant and extremely beautiful tracks.

during signal quintet's tour of japan in 2006 these three improvisations were recorded live in studio at the yamaguchi center for arts and media. jason kahn formed signal quintet in 2004 to record his graphical score «timelines.» the group has continued on as an improvising ensemble with the recordings on «yamaguchi» documenting their first tour.

signal quintet draws on three generations of some of europe's most innovative musicians, with their collective performance histories spanning back to the late 1970's. with instrumentation ranging from norbert möslang's cracked everyday electronics to the deep acoustics of chrisitan weber's contrabass, the music of signal quintet transfers fluidly from electronic to acoustic, surging with an organic ebb and flow through improvisations where the listener's notion of time passing is lost in an immersive sound experience.

«effacement»

composed over the time span of two years, "effacement" draws on tomas korber's work with guitar, electronics, field recordings and the computer. although comprised of six different pieces, "effacement" can be heard as one long composition. the unifying qualities of each separate piece reveal themselves with repeated listening. as the music on this cd spans an extremely wide dynamic spectrum, listening at a loud volume is suggested.

swiss-spanish composer/improviser tomas korber was born in 1979 in zürich, switzerland. he has performed solo and collaborated with erikm, otomo yoshihide, mersault, jason kahn, günter müller, dieb13, dropp ensemble, norbert möslang, toshimaru nakamura, steinbrüchel and keith rowe, among many others. korber has released cd's on numerous labels, including absurd, for4ears, (1.8)sec.records, kissy records and w.m.o/r. he has also composed music for theater and film productions.

mersault's album, raymond and marie, works by undermining expectations, shifting the foreground to the background and back again. a nominally placid passage contains a busy roughness that, without any overt moment of transition, characterizes the moment in question. similarly, passages of resonant double bass emerge from rough, bracing chunks of sound, dropping after a while into parallel coexistence with electronic drone and muted percussion.

... believe this was tomas’ debut recording ; of course he’s gone on to play (guitar & electronics) with pretty much a who’s who of 21st century electro-acoustic improvisation (caught him on tour recently with norbert möslang, günter müller, & jason kahn) - but i get the feeling that he’s more in “composition” mode here given how this epic drone piece develops over its 45-minute duration. fans of brendan murray’s recent work will find parallel here, despite the use of very different tools/methodologies ...
