| | 1998 solo album (vinyl-only) from the dead c’s bruce russell ... two side-length pieces, the first, fidelity-wise, matching the “gong” side of lamonte/marian’s “black record” (only sub russell’s gtr wobble/scratch for the kool-aid bath, mechanical feedback/buzz for the inflated sense of self-worth), the second featuring a trio of russell, siltbreeze’s tom lax, and paul “surface of the earth” toohey get into some deep amm-flair modules ; russell’s pervasive amp-buzz cut w/clattering percussion and lax’ (inside-piano ?) ... under-rated, i’ve always thought ... |

| dead c. mainstay's multiple personalities mull the merits of the back-to-monodiglycerides movement.
the first bruce russell solo release project for a revolution in new york sees our man truly alone on the first side, messing with a guitar over a looped drone accompaniment. remarkably subdued and dare i say, relaxing. side two has tom lax and paul toohey (surface of the earth) helping out with percussion and electronics in a very free collaboration where what doesn’t happen defines the tension of the piece as much as what does.
theres always been a tension between noise and minimalism in russell’s music as evidenced on project for a revolution... and made especially apparent on the crank automotive release maximalist mantra music.
two of the tracks here were recorded live at the dux de lux in christchurch and the sounds of the audience map neatly into the low-intensity noise emanating from the stage to make you feel as though you were there. |
