tom carter & vanessa arn: 'what is here for?'
lp

limited edition of 515 copies. contains two long and deep duo cuts of univibe-era lap steel/ electronic tone generator improvisation, one side recorded live and stamped w/ the indelible mark (ie, the #15 bus rumbling by) of bullbabe studios, austin tx (the odor of sweat, lone star, and barbeque is palpable). the sounds: monolithic serenity infused with a deep breath from the void, as peaceful and violent as a mountain range. a shame that this configuration is so underrepresented in the discography, as the mesh of t&v's playing is so instantly seismic...

tom carter is best known for his work with charalambides, which he co-founded with longtime creative partner christina carter in 1991. since 2002, carter has also undertaken solo work and collaborations. his 2003 solo tour, centered around the seminal brattleboro freefolk festival, featured unaccompanied solo shows and musical excursions (on stage and tape) with bardo pond, thurston moore, dredd foole, the mvee medicine show, ian nagoski, tower recordings, and double leopards, among others.

vanessa arn became a member of boston/california/texas group primordial undermind soon after tom's brief tenure in the group. the potential for mountainous difference tones between the lap steel and the triwave tone generator (a custom built synthesizer) was immediately apparent to all parties, and tom suggested a collaboration (which was greatly assisted by the fact that tom and vanessa were at the time next door neighbors). a sole performance and a handful of recordings ensued and the results are here for your perusal.

barn owl / tom carter - split lp (edt. 380)

newest blackest rainbow hot on the heels of some truly killer releases from the artists involved, both of whom seem to have really pushed their sounds and vibes to new levels this year. barn owl's side has been mastered by local jammer ben nash, and its three tracks of sparse drone layered with bleak guitar epic-ness, tingling chimes, and dark mountainous whispers. the guitars here sound delicate and beautiful, but it remains bleak and empty, if you enjoyed their lp on not not fun, then this is a real treat.

tom carter's 16-minute 'train kept' follows pretty damn nicely from his recent shots at infinity releases on important. a far cry from his more psychedelic folk experimentations, here he slashes and riffs like many a legend, and maybe, just maybe, it's a slight tribute to a certain band, too? this is a fully wild piece of work. black sleeves, pasted stark landscape cover, with an insert of liner notes. limited to 380 copies.

free porcupine society press release...
the second full-length release from psychedelic bread bakers and bird whisperers badgerlore -- represented on this release by beard-core ambassadors ben chasny (six organs of admittance, comets on fire), tom carter (charalambides), pete swanson (yellow swans), and rob fisk (7 year rabbit cycle, ex-deerhoof) -- stories for owls features six beautifully lush, organic pieces that rise and fall with the group's broke-down, burned-up improv and the interplay of piano, vocals, and dual guitars.

the music is organized around the conceptual theme of birds constructing nests, and each track explores this idea differently. stories for owls also showcases the talents of two newcomers; tom carter, whose playing seems beamed in from some entirely off-kilter universe; and pete swanson, who by grabbing and processing live sound, both in real time and through tape-delay, gives the already rickety skeletons of these songs an even greater fragility and tenderness. beautiful and devastating.

tom carter - shots at infinity 2 - lp
imprec203 - lp

this is the companion release to the tom carter cd titled shots at infinity 1 being release on important simultaneously. shots at infinity 2 is two long live tracks in the same mode as shots at infinity 1, but more cut loose and blown out, recorded in nemo bidstrup's record store and burnt hills' basement jam zone.

tom carter is a guitar player best known for his work with acclaimed psych-drone iconoclasts charalambides. since 2000, however, he has become increasingly active as not only a solo artist but as a collaborator. he has performed with improvising musicians as diverse as thurston moore, jandek, tetuzi akiyama, matt valentine, and many others, as well as being a key member in groups like badgerlore (with ben chasny of six organs of admittance), friday group, mudsuckers (with robert horton and the yellow swans), and zaika (with marcia bassett of the double leopards and hototogisu).

carter's solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him to be concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked beauty, with heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise and drone bands. his influences include everyone from lamonte young to david crosby.

sky city - sky city
imprec159 - cd

sky city features tom carter (charalambides), robert horton, lisa cameron & lee ann cameron. lisa cameron is a drummer and percussionist from austin, texas, whom tom carter has played with in the past. lisa creates exquisite noise by vibrating snares and cymbals with feedback. when she heard tom carter and robert horton’s lunar eclipse, she wanted to record with them. lisa and vocalist lee ann cameron drove from austin to the bay area and a session was planned. in the meantime, tom was journeying in new mexico and drove by a road sign to sky city, so he had found the name for the new group.

the day of the session, lisa and lee ann drove from san francisco, picked up tom in oakland and arrived at the studio on the hill. lisa had somehow left her equipment in sf. as they drove up, i heard tom say, “that’s so texas.” then the magic started.

lisa asked, “do you have a cymbal?
yes
an extra contact microphone?
yes.
a snare?
yes.
some strips of metal?
yes.
then we walked over the abyss together into sky city.

sky city is psychedelic space music with all the atoms of surfaces freed to inter and counter react. noise in the outer dimension. horton’s homemade inventions, carter’s lyrical ebow guitar lines. the walking on the moon vocals of lee ann cameron. the vibration of material planes by lisa cameron. the broken blues of the boot (horton’s oldest instrument 4 strings on a piece of wood the shape of italy). sun ra ark and neil young’s arc put through a digital blender and reconstituted for space travel. the magical musical thing (mmt) a toy synthesizer from the 70’s. a great drawing on the inside cover by natacha robinson. a chance for music induced time travel to parallel worlds and an opportunity to recieve a collect call for the future from sky city.

swamp noise drone. feedback is layered like mud on the carcass of song structure. robert uses primitive cassette manipulation as well as digital processing to thicken the sound into a swamp. think credence clearwater revival without the one chord they knew. on three of the songs, pete uses his analog reel-to-reel wall-of-sound processing apparatus. longjaw mudsuckers was inspired by a mid-eighties cassette where merzbow mixed john hudak’s nature sounds into a screaming mass of sonic debris. robert recorded a stream after the huge new year’s day storm and pete plugged it into his system, making it sound at times like a stream, an ocean, and robots whispering mechanical secrets.

this cd contains some of the first recordings of tom carter’s circuit bending. individual attributes of gabe mindel’s guitar roar, tom carter’s ebow laptop whirl, and horton’s clanky homemades merge into the mud stew. driving the swirl are samples of boogie woogie piano, riffs from the session, and pounding drums of guests michael donnelly and doug “moonshine” jin. the last number, sweet, conjures the bar room sound of kansas city, 1920, but recorded inside a thermonuclear reactor. the sounds created are so raw and tormented it’s hard to believe they were having a good time. must have something to do with the times, the war and the general vacuity of that season’s holidays.

how did these recordings happen? during the torrential rains of december 2005, caused by global warming, robert horton invited tom carter, gabe and pete of the yellow swans, and glenn donaldson up the hill to his home in el cerrito for food, drink, and music-making. as it turned out, pete and glenn couldn’t make it, so gabe, tom, and robert vibrated the peaceful el cerrito neighborhood to mud. we had beer, wine and much feedback. the turbulence of the sounds matched the late december weather. the following week when pete came over to overdub his sounds, robert had found an article on mudsuckers in the berkeley daily planet. the headline was “mudsuckers may be ugly, but they have value.” a band was born.

a mudsucker is a fish that’s mostly a mouth, which spends its whole life on one patch of mudflat. scientists use these fish to monitor carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, and other toxic chemicals in coastal waters. the group’s name as well as some of the song titles were taken from this article. the second song, here come the mud dragons was a phrase spoken by three kids splashing in the mud in a local park. another song electric sunflower, was named by glenn donaldson in an email explaining why he couldn’t be at the session.

artist: charalambides
title: likeness
catalog #: krank113
formats available: cd
release date: october 29, 2007

likeness is the newest release from the duo of tom and christina carter. recorded over a period of several weeks during the spring of 2006, the album is a return to the spontaneous composition of previous charalambides records such as houston and union. with the exception of "the good life", which appeared in a primitive version on the wholly other cdr home, all of the tracks on this release sprung forth after 'record' was pressed, and were fleshed out via overdubs, editing, and a malfunctioning space echo over the course of the next few months.

lyrical content largely derives from public domain american popular song from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, edited, rearranged, and largely deconstructed by christina into abstract 'protest' songs for the century at hand. musically, the album departs from the warm psych of a vintage burden in favor of the lush and layered vocal strata of christina's later solo works, and a chillier, more abrasive guitar sound that favors the velvets over the byrds.

though containing much of the compositional concision that gave a vintage burden much of its appeal, the sound here just as frequently turns the corner into the abstract echoing spaces that characterize the more discordant sounds of charalambides at the dawn of their kranky residency.

artist: tom carter
title: monument
catalog #: krank070

release date: june 21, 2004

monument is a recording of guitar music from tom carter of charalambides and is the second in a series of charalambides-related reissues by kranky. the two tracks of solo lap steel guitar were recorded live to dat by tom carter a few days before a live performance in march, 2001. monument was originally released by wholly other in an edition of 55 cd-rs. the first track, "monument 1 (memorial)," is slightly longer than two minutes and barely reveals itself. the second, "monument 2," is 47 minutes in length and considerably more expansive and louder than the opening cut. the album was made using lap steel guitar, glass slides, digitech tsr-12 stereo reverb, a rat distortion pedal and craftsman screwdrivers.tom carter is best known for his work with charalambides, which he co-founded with longtime creative partner christiina carter in 1991. since 2002, carter has also undertaken solo work and collaborations. his 2003 solo tour, centered around the seminal brattleboro freefolk festival, featured unaccompanied solo shows and musical excursions (on stage and tape) with bardo pond, thurston moore, dredd foole, the mvee medicine show, ian nagoski, tower recordings, and double leopards, among others.

spiderwebs / mike tamburo & matthew mcdowell / keenan lawler
strands formerly braided cd [mf15]

when you unbraid your hair, the strands remain curled and contorted for some time. the act of braiding the strands together affects the structure and fibers of the hair, taking days or even weeks for the hair to relax back into its natural position. this relationship between strands in a braid is similar to relationships between people. each interaction, especially ones with close friends, affects and influences the interactions you have later on. thus, strands formerly braided is a fitting title for this edition of the music fellowship's triptych series because the three featured artists have a long history of improvisation and collaboration.

spiderwebs is the duo of tom carter and sandy ewen. carter is best known for his work with the landmark drone group charalambides, which he formed with longtime creative partner christina carter. since 2002, carter has begun collaborating with a wide range of other artists, from his work with 60’s australian folk poet and songwriter, pip proud, to his improvisations with psychedelic stoner rock band bardo pond. for this release, he teams with sandy ewen who has a long history of improvisation as well, from her membership in houston's meca improvisational ensemble to her performances in the nameless sound collective concert series and austin's no idea festival.

mike tamburo has been a member of the pittsburgh avant garde music scene as an integral part of crystalline drumless drone rock structures of meisha and the more-free flowing ethnic apocalypse music of arco flute foundation, as well as countless spontaneous performances and post-gathering improv sessions. for this recording, we present one the best efforts of these spontaneous performances, reteaming tamburo with matthew mcdowell of arco flute foundation for a minimalist, pacific 23-minute drone.

for over a decade, louisville's r. keenan lawler has been quietly evolving a highly personal and exploratory language on the resonator guitar which has been called "cosmic, monolithic and deeply american". his music is informed by sources ranging from carnatic classical, charles ives, albert ayler, blues, minimalism and non western trance musics. although primarily a solo performer he is best known for his collaborative work. the keyhole ii album he recorded with pelt and metal worker eric clark is one of pelt's most beautiful and memorable recordings, and the recording of his guitar playing in a sewer pipe in louisville is featured on matmos' the civil war. he has also performed or collaborated with a wide range of musicians including rhys chatham, john butcher, charalambides, my morning jacket, kevin drumm, and lukas ligeti. for this release, we present an exclusive recording from lawler, featuring his trademark national steel resonator guitar and his unique method of playing with sound.

third album from the duo of charalambidestom carter & simultaneously everywhere/everyman robert horton, with guests michael shannon, brad & eden rose, and henry kuntz ...

i’d comment more on just how damn prolific these guys have been over the past few years if their output wasn’t so solid / surprising / non-repetitive and (let’s face it) ... great. tom’s elegiac guitar and robert’s experimental instruments / jerry-rigged electronic warble are certainly made to augment each other; that each piece here works a different mentality (gauzy drones, eastern-leaning acoustic improv, tape-machine meltdowns...) so well is testament to their versatility as musicians...

excellent stuff; no matter if this is your first time hearing these dudes or your 100th...

tom carter & robert horton
monsters of felt
preservation

robert horton’s musical exploits are diverse, heady and spans over three decades. from his early punk days to joining various groups in pursuit of free jazz, drone and even psychedelic hillbilly, horton is happily hard to pin down. he also makes his own instruments. one found regularly across the 30-plus releases he’s been involved with since 2005 is the ‘boot’, a four-stringed instrument that plays like an otherworldly dobro or slide guitar.

tom carter has been a lightning rod-like figure for the american psychedelic, folk and experimental underground scenes since forming one of the country’s central cosmic travellers in charalambides. over the past 5 years carter has spread his wings into solo work and collaborations with the likes of bardo pond, tower recordings and sonic youth’s thurston moore. however, it’s the pairing with robert horton that emerges most frequently in his busy schedule, as they continue to foster their pairing into a singular kind of chemistry.

their most developed work thus far, monsters of felt hits a mesmerising zone both urgent and lulling at once. the radiating undertow of horton’s sonic manipulations – including sound sources from cassettes, field recordings, computer, bass and the ‘boot’ – accompanies carter’s re-routing of american guitar traditions into mantras of trance and white light. the set also features appearances from kindred spirits and free-folk favourites brad and eden rose, along with eastern instrument journeymen henry kuntz and michael shannon. it all adds up to monsters of felt being yet another exciting and compelling step for two most intrepid musicians.
