kranky press release...

artist: tim hecker
title: ravedeath, 1972
catalog #: krank 154
release date: february 14, 2011

tim hecker's latest work approaches a form of secular musical transcendentalism from within the battered temple of spirituality. recorded in a church in reykjavik, iceland and using a pipe organ as the primary sound source, this new piece is essentially a live recording. in reality, it exists in a nether world between captured live performance and meticulous studio work, melding the two approaches to sonic artifice as a unity. it is in parts a document of air circulating within a wooden room, and also a pagan work of physical resonance within a space once reserved for the hallowed breath of the divine.

while the title of the piece "hatred of music" might be a clue, the album is also partly an attempt to confront a pervasive negativity surrounding music. historical rituals of destroying pianos, mountains of pirated cdrs pushed by bulldozers in eastern europe, or the melancholy of the digital music era began as sideline motifs which quickly informed the work on this record. they also really didn't at all.

despite that the context is wide open in such a form of musical abstraction, the substance of these immersive compositions showcases hecker's continued mastery of organizing sound into a visceral near entity. it is an almost physical presence that the listener feels as much as hears. this work is a significant contribution to hecker's oeuvre, one which spans over ten years of musical production. ravedeath is an enigmatic document of beauty and force.

the album was recorded mostly over the period of one day in july of 2010. iceland-based musician ben frost assisted with the engineering and performs on this recording.

march 2009 release ; second full-length outing for kranky from tim hecker ...

while overall it’s a much more mellow outing than “harmony in ultraviolet” ‘s metal-tinged overload, there’s a new-found focus on pulsing sub-bass activity that recalls tim’s roots as a producer of post-dancefloor music (see his jetone sides for force inc.) as well as ushering the music into new domains ... the deep, swirling chord-shapes that keep this from being an exercise in pure texture are always present ; tim’s expertise at riding the line between mood and sentimentality always in effect ...

a bunch of us have been waiting with baited breath for this one ; i’m glad to report that everything i’ve grown to love about tim’s music in recent years is here in droves ... highly recommended for fans new & old alike ...
kranky press release...
artist: tim hecker
title: an imaginary country
catalog #: krank130
formats available: 2xlp / cd
release date: march 9, 2009

an imaginary country continues from the trajectory of his last album, the critically acclaimed harmony in ultraviolet, while also showing a few new tricks. tim has incorporated more pulses into this work and also works with a sound pallete including overdriven mellotron strings and synthesizer. at times this album is less overtly aggressive than previous works, but the notion that this is pastoral work would be dead wrong as there are plenty of the agitated crescendos that he is know for. this music backs off from the void of immensity in favor of a terrain of lushness and warmth.

this heat, this work of musical abstraction, is largely made possible by the tools of digital technology that he employs. it is a means of musical production that allows for the obliteration of questions of representation or instrumentation. strings, synthesizers, pianos and guitars all fade away into the fog of what they once were. a tropical mist (or a northerly breeze) of sound is also a musical resonance of imagination.

the title comes from a quote, "the imaginary country... one that cannot be found on a map," uttered by debussy in regards to the sad state of musical affairs at the time, arguing that music was in dire need for alternate worlds of possibility. in some ways this is a utopian work, in the sense of the term meaning that of 'no-place'. all the tracks are landmarks in a dream cartography.

with this album tim hecker expands his palette as well as his range, further cementing his reputation as a singular and significant entity in the world of contemporary music.an imaginary country follows a collaboration with aidan baker for the alien8 label entitled "fantasma parastasie" released in the fall of 2008, and the harmony in ultraviolet album released in late 2006 on kranky.

10.25.2006

hi folks! couple of newsworthy items. first off, innature will now me available from keith fullerton whitman's online music sales site called mimaroglu music sales. stop by the website and check 'em out....they sell some great stuff. secondly...the praise for innature just keeps rolling in. here's a nice little review from the fine folks at fakejazz.com. and finally.....we mastered the fun years record this past weekend with our friend josh bonati. he worked his usual magic and the record sounds fantastic! we are so excited about this release and are hard at work putting together the packaging and preparing it for human consumption. stay tuned!

10.03.2006

we have posted a little photo "how to get the sleeve out of the wallet" here for those of you who have purchased innature and are having difficulty getting the sleeve that houses the cd out of the main wallet. again we apologize for this inconvenience. we are taking measures to address the issue and all product leaving barge hq will be packaged with the sleeve free-floating in the wallet so that you my choose to use the insert if you wish. we hope the "how to" helps.

in other news....check out some of the reviews innature has been receiving in the press section of the site. there will be reviews in the november issue of the wire, signal to noise and resonance as well.

09.27.2006

hi everyone! brg001/innature is finally released to the public. the street date was tuesday the 26th and should be available at your favorite record shop. if they don't have it....tell them to order it! you can also order direct from us on the catalog page using a major credit card or pay pal. if that doesn't suit your fancy it is available from ctd ltd., forced exposure, boomkat, ektro records, aquarius records and other music among others. dave and i are so happy about this record finally coming to fruition and would like to publicly thank all the artists who brought such fine music to the table...you are the cat's pajamas! i also wanted to let everyone know that we have had many comments not only about how great the line-up and music is but about how difficult the insert is to get out. we sincerely apologize about this slight production miscalculation. we liken it to eating fine oysters....though difficult to open, the rewards are well worth the effort...that is if you like oysters. i will be posting a little pictorial "how to" in the coming days...we hope this will be helpful to those with the good sense and taste to purchase this compilation.

anyway, now that innature is finally out we can turn a bit of our attention to brg 002 which will be a full-length from the incredible fun years. we have the final mixes in-house and are sorting out all the fun production stuff that goes into making records....and when i say fun...i'm not being sarcastic. dave and i live for this....just ask my wonderfully patient and forgiving wife.

03.26.2006update: brg 001 has officially been dubbed innature. the track listing is available in the catalog section. a street date has been confirmed for september 26th 2006.hopefully you were able to catch circle whilst they were touring the us. dave and i went to the nyc show and they were face-melting as usual. let's hope they come back soon.animal hospital is in the midst of booking a us tour for june. check animalhospitalmusic.com for details.i don't know about you, but i'm ready for some warm weather...this whole in like a lion, out like a lamb thing is bullshit. what happened to global warming?!01.15.2006

hi all. barge recordings is pleased to announce the world-wide release of brg 001. a compilation of epic proportions bringing together some of the finest musical talents from the us, canada and europe. the cast will include: circle, polmo polpo, geoff mullen, the fun years, bird show, loren mazzacane connors, tim hecker, the kallikak family, animal hospital and mgr. we are ecstatic to be working with such an amazing group of artists and would like to thank all of them for their contributions....it's going to be a great record. the tbd titled compilation will be on store shelves in the spring of 2006. please tell your local record store proprietor to order a handful....it will only reflect poorly upon him/her if it is not prominently displayed in their establishment.

we are hard at work here at barge world hq. designers are being "commissioned", coffee is being gulped, sleep is being lost and girlfriends are getting "edgy".

please check back periodically for updates. this site is still under a constant state of flux. we are html challenged lunk-heads....but we're doing all we can to make this an enjoyable and educational world-wide web experience. feel free to drop us a line with any questions or comments.

thanks.

::brg 001/innature - how do i get this frickin' cd out?!::

if you have purchased innature recently you may have noticed that the inside sleeve that houses the cd is pretty difficult to get out of the wallet. we have an easy way of getting around this issue without damaging the wallet...please see below. we apologize for this miscalculation....we have addressed the issue and all cds that leave our "warehouse" will now be supplied with the insert floating between inside the wallet giving the customer the choice of using the sleeve or not.

about 50 went out without the sleeve at all. if you purchased one of these "special editions"and would prefer to have the inner sleeve, please email us and we will send you one on us. thanks for your patience and enjoy the music.

step 1:

open the wallet and grasp with your hand of choice as in the above photo.

step 2:

through the inside opening, insert your index and fore-finger into the slot minding the edges of the wallet.

step 3:

gently but with a bit of force push on the inner sleeve being careful not to tear the edges. you can use your thumb to apply pressure to cover panel. you will dent the inner sleeve slightly when performing this step...but the damage is minimal and adds to the character of the sleeve.

step 4:

pull on the tab that you just made from pushing the sleeve through and give'er a good tug.

step 5:

slides right out like a charm!

step 6:

viola! insert cd into home stereo device and set level volume anywhere between 6 and 8.

step 7 "the re-entry":

slide back in using the inner slot. should not feel as tight and goes in rather gently like every second time should.

step 8:

slide all the way in and repeat process when needed. it becomes much easier with each in and out and you'll find that it has a nice fit when it's broken in....like a good pair of jeans!

we apologize for any inuendo....it was just too easy.

please let us know if you have any problems....we're happy to help.

thanks for listening

xoxo
ian and dave

february 2009 release ; 2009 installment in kompakt’s ongoing “pop ambient” series ...

some of you might be surprised to see this title in the mms catalogue (esp. after my various railings against the weekly machinations of the dance music industry as of late) ; it’d probably only take a guess or two to figure out why i brought a few in (yes, the tim hecker track, but also nice to see sylvain chauveau on here, as well as the fun years and some of mr. voigt’s own a-linear transgressions) ...

aspects of this compilation do make we want to shoot my face off, yes, but more often than not i found my self tapping my foot along with the largely beat-less spaces herein ...

pop ambient 2009 //
various artists // kompakt //

the bliss is back (finally). for those that know will have to forgive our delay in bringing this new edition of our beloved pop ambient series to the world however we couldn't be prouder of the contributions we have to offer this year.

to the uninitiated, pop ambient serves as a very essential arm of the kompakt family - always curated by kompakt co-founder wolfgang voigt (aka gas, burger/ink, etc), pop ambient always aims to offer a provocative collection of listening music that has proved for years as a guaranteed means of giving warmth throughout those cold winter months.

one of the most striking things many will find this year's pop ambient are the many new faces compared to the historically familiar roster that has graced previous editions. leading noise-experimental producer tim hecker of alien8 and kranky fame joins us with a tremendous contribution that builds wave after wave in textured noise and melody. boomkat's winners of best album of 2008 the fun years take loop melody and turn it inside out with an astounding guitar based tune. pop ambient 2009 turns to the mighty imprint type and the esteemed producer sylvain chauveau with 2 contributions of untreated works from the lovely nuage full length that straddle his work with a small ensemble and his own piano and guitar performances.

considering the overwhelming response to wolfgang voigt's gas collection reissue nah und fern (komcd66) and the raster-noton released book/cd of 2008, it's fair game he dominates this compilation under the guise as mint with this deep and somberly moving piece and as well together with longtime production partner jörg burger as burger/voigt with a gas-eous remix of jürgen paape's ausking and a highly emotive original. popnoname shows off his diverse talent with a kraut-y sunscape of majestic measure. finally, pop ambient favorite klimek in stunning splendor...the horns of heaven ring loud to open the compilation and together with husak, he brings pop ambient 2009 to an end in a majestic roar.

considering 2008 was such an amazing year for left-field electronic music, we anticipate this year's change of pace to be welcomed by our loyal fans and open up to new. so...enough words - get comfortable and dive in.
