may 2008 release ; interesting “trio” take on joke lanz’ long-running sudden infant project - here augmented by free-improv bassist christian weber (often seen alongside günter müller, jason kahn, tomas korber, norbert möslang, and the rest of the swiss eai mafia) and bill “family battle snake” kouligas ...

takes range from electronically modified sound-poetry to full on harsh noise, with stops at almost rockabilly-swing territories ... and bits that sound oddly like the score to john carpenter’s “they live” sent packing through a boss overdrive pedal (listen to the sound-sample) ...

produced by john agnello and thurston moore
recorded and mixed by john agnello at bisqueteen, amherst ma, spring 2007
mastered by greg calbi at sterling sound

 ...

it’s thurston’s first solo outing since 1995’s psychic hearts. of course, thurston’s been releasing records here, there and everywhere mostly in the context of rowdy and rambunctious noise/improv escapades but this new one is killer diller songs! unlike psychic hearts’ skeletal trio rock, this new jammer, 12 years post, has a far fuller bouquet of sonic depth and proves this sonic dude to have a very real songwriting life outside of the legendary sonic youth (of which he is a founding figure, duh).

this newborn disc is 12 songs long. thurston recorded primarily on acoustic guitar and bass, laying down the core of the tunes with drummer compatriot sonic youth’s steve shelly and violinist samara lubelski, a noted player from mv/ee and the golden road, hall of fame and other awesome gatherings as well as solo artiste.

thurston grabbed john agnello to record and mix the sucker after having a helluva good time with the bro from working on sonic youth’s 2006 killer rather ripped. they decided to work in dinosaur jr.’s j mascisbisquiteen studio (the top floor in j’s amherst house actually) where dino did their beyond album. this worked out very nicely as it allowed thurston to yell down the stairs every time he needed a shredding guitar solo and j would trundle up, plug in and burn. other guests on “trees outside...” are christina carter, she of charalambides, and she of the most beatific, beautific voice on land, sea and air.

one track called honest james has thurston and christina singing duet against a single acoustic guitar and it is a naked groove. the otherworldly canadian musician andrew macgregor aka “gown” plays some spectacularly understated and incredible guitar and sunburned hand of the man’s john moloney takes over the drum stool to absolutely flail on the pit snarling wonderful witches. and then there’s the 20 seconds or so of primal noise wave courtesy of american noise underground genius leslie keffer on off work.

most of the tunes are lyric driven but there are a couple of majestic instrumentals like trees outside the academy, which brings the album to a musical and breathless close. there’s also some weird cassette tape that thurston found at his mom’s of him at 13 years old in the early 70s making some kind of sound-theatre. it’s kinda nuts, and it’s the last “hidden” track. tracks like frozen gtr, the shape is in a trance, silver>blue, never day and fri/end (a theme song to the hippest tv show yet to be broadcast) will lead you in to a sparkling and heavy new world of thurston’s heart, mind and soul.

thurston moore, for those of you just visiting planet earth, has been playing music and liberating whatever ossifying standards rock n’ roll becomes threatened by since the late 70s when he walked the downtown jungle of punk/post-punk/no wave nyc and started the band sonic youth. ever since he and the band have consistently stayed true to the authenticity and creativity of radical rock n roll idealism. from the experience of a life touring, writing, having a magical daughter with his amazing wife and partner kim gordon, thurston has poured a heady brew into whatever speakers this new cd flows from. take a sip, and pass it around.

the bark haze - total joke era - cd
imprec127 - cd

the bark haze is primarily a guitar duo of gown (nom de plume of one andrew macgregor) and thurston moore (sonic youth etfuckingcetera). auxiliary members have been know to include pete nolan (magik markers, virgin eye blood brothers, cops et al). their name came from a mis-hearing of the radical early 70s r+b group the bar-kays and from that moment the concept of mis-hearing and allegiance to presenting the mis-hearing as some open-ended musical course became the bark haze's identity.

so far all concerts have taken place in western massachusetts and once in the confines of cambridge, ma's twisted village record emporium. they anxiously await their debut gig in the uk at the nightmare before christmas event curated by moore. as the heroic and potentially bonkers carpenters refrained we've only just begun. damn straight.

important press release...
this was a rare quartet of guitars performance that took place august 8 of 2001 in a now defunct club in brooklyn by thurston moore, lee ranaldo, nels cline and carlos giffoni. its a crystal clear multitrack recording that was later mixed and mastered by producer wharton tiers.

infinite possibilities are explored as the signature styles of each of the group members create moments of tension, peace, violence, and run trough every possible range of emotions. psychodelic tunnels of sound echo trough endless guitar lines, minimalism and maximalism both present in one moment, there are no solos and no selfishness, as 4 combine to create an unbeliabavle 40+ minute piece. a document of pure sonic exploration of a moment in time that will never be repeated by 4 of the most respected experimentalist of our day.

thurston moore - kapotte muziek by...
cdep
korm plastics kp 3015

in april 2002, kapotte muziek returned to the usa for their second tour (the first one was in 1993), this as a trio of frans de waard, roel meelkop and peter duimelinks. on stop was at the rural city of easthampton and the audience that night was rather small, but among them were scott faust, gregory whitehead and thurston moore. that particular concert showed kapotte muziek in probably their most fluxus element: the process of making music was made audible. the amplification of the opening of the bags, searching out objects to play and from there built the concert was a new, and as of yet, unrepeated, idea. for the 12th part in our series of 'kapotte muziek by...' we asked thurston moore to expand on this idea and in a totally free setting of piano, guitar and small objects, he recreates the concerts by removing the concert and replacing it by his own playing, where the original recording serves as a score.

thurston moore is a well-known improviser, having played with nels cline, loren mazzacane connors, tom surgal and william hooker. besides all of that, he also plays in rockband.

interesting debut release by the duo of susie ibarra (nyc-based free-drummer wunderkind; has played with everyone from the sonic youth axis as well as the contemporary fire music wave) and cuban percussionist / producer roberto rodrigues ...

the appeal of both here is definitely their real-time, in-front-of-the-kit playing - the first track (the sound-sample to your left) is pretty awesome; a mix of the traditional filipino kulintang & almost acid-like electronic squiggle - delivers on a bunch of fronts, immaculately recorded. there are some other nice bits of almost richard crandell-esque mbira & percussion, even a live excerpt with thurston moore guesting - but after those the disc kind of trails off, focusing more on a kind of ... i don’t know what to call it; maybe “cafe music(i.e. that smooth, in/offensively light, jazzy loop-based electronica you hear when you’re waiting for your partner to finish ogling costume jewelry in the aldo accessories store in the mall) with ibarra’s voice in the foreground, accompanied by rodrigues’ “breezy island beats” ... (not to slight their abilities; she’s got a pleasant, breathy voice that will certainly go down well w/the ibiza crowd - his digital studio methodologies keep the mix clean & clear ...)

nice stuff; wishing there was more unfettered percussion & electronic jamming on here, but the bits we do get are sweet indeed ...
plastic press release...
dialects, the debut album by electric kulintang is an album that perfectly distills electronic, dance and kulintang music. kulintang music comes from the philippines, named after a percussion instrument that consists of eight gongs it is also used as the name of the music being played. the duo, susie ibarra (composer/percussionist, vocals) and roberto rodriguez (composer/percussionist, beat maker) colaborate in the blending and creation of this filipino trip-hop.

filipina-american composer/percussionist susie ibarra is best known for her individual artistry on percussion and genre-defying music. cuban born drummer/percussionist and composer roberto rodriguez brings groundbreaking new music through his original musical voice.

electric kulintang formed in 2005, after ibarra and rodriguez, traveled to the philippines to research live kulintang music and dance. ibarra, in 2002, composed and performed with an electro-acoustic ensemble that included the kulintang instrument but through the encouragement of rodriguez to make the kulintang electric, ek was born. with rodriguez programming beats and ibarra composing the music, electric kulintang has already caught the attention of the magic triangle festival in amherst, musica a metronom in barcelona, and the american composers out front! series at joe's pub at the public theatre in nyc. these live performances have been joined by the likes of thurston moore (who guests on dialects), oz noy (also guests on dialects), sean lennon, craig taborn and trevor dunn.

electric kulintang's dialects is cinematic in many ways, telling short stories and poems to its listeners. each piece is a scene, sometimes nostalgic of a place, sometimes nostalgic of a memory. listeners of jazz, pop and rock noise, indie and experimental all have something to look forward to in dialects. not to mention the world of new composers, improvisors, avant-garde and world music aficionados who have been waiting to see what susie ibarra and roberto rodriguez's new genre-bending music will bring to the plate.

about the artists

susie ibarra
filipina-american composer/percussionist susie ibarra is known for her individual artistry on percussion and genre-defying music. "in the past decade, her willingness to step out from behind the kit and embrace non jazz forms- opera, poetry experimental sound, dance-has taken her from that initial buzz from below houston street (nyc) to international reknown as a composer, performer and proponent of folkloric music." catapano, nytimes. susie ibarra, a yamaha drums, vic firth and paiste artist, received nomination for best emerging percussionist in downbeat poll aug 2006. recently, she performed a ny premiere of her solo drumset piece titled optical illusion: 4 meditations in light at zankel carnegie hall. several other current works include solo piano dancesteps for cag artist fellow jade simmons; shangri-la, a collaboration with pulitzer prize poet and librettist yusef komunyakaa at the kitchen; and dreams, etudes for her trio. she has toured extensively in the us, europe and asia as well as performed and recorded with noted artists such as john zorn, dave douglas, pauline oliveros, trisha brown, ikue mori, sylvie courvoisier, thurston moore, yo la tengo, yusef komunyakjaa among others.

roberto rodriguez
born in east havana, cuba, percussionist and composer roberto rodriguez draws upon his influences of world music, pop, rock, jazz, electronic, avant garde and classical, making him one of the most versed performers as well as a unique artistic voice. rodriguez, a grammy nominee and american music award recipient, has performed with notable artists such as: rufus wainwright, joe jackson ,john zorn, marc ribot, celia cruz, israel "cachao" lopez, paquito d' rivera, julio iglesias, miami sound machine, paul simon, lloyd cole, dr. l subramaniam, kavita krishnamurti, lester bowie and wadada leo smith.

what you do get from this excellent triple-disc box are takes from the brooklyn, buffalo, chicago, cleveland, milwaukee, minneapolis, montreal, and toronto stagings of the piece during february 2007, performed with ludicrously high levels of energy by chatham himself, along with such notables as andrew broder, tony conrad, david daniell, kim gordon, alan licht, robert longo, rob “lichens” lowe, doug mccombs, thurston moore, jon mueller, harris newman, jeff parker, lee ranaldo, chris rosenau, adam & ben vida, etc ...

if you don’t know the piece ; it’s essentially an exercise in yielding what chatham himself describes as “choiring” - a heavy, upper-register buildup of harmonic movement that results when so many guitar players, over 20 minutes, slowly work across an open e minor chord from the low e to the high e, at deafening volume, while a single drummer keeps time on a hi-hat (pt. 1) or contributes with a “driving backbeat” followed by a long fill / freak-out (pt. 2) - it’s the ultimate in high-gain rock ‘n’ roll minimalism, really, and because of the open interpretation, the piece can swing pretty heavily in a number of directions given the players - hence this collection offering 5 different realizations of each part by 8 different groups ...

highly recommended as a historical document and as a testament to the piece’s lasting relevance ...

rhys chatham & his guitar trio all-stars
guitar trio is my life !

utilizing multiple electric guitars and a single chord, 1977’s “guitar trio” is composer rhys chatham’s signature work, and a euphoric, minimal-punk classic. it’s an inspired amalgamation — the droning, shimmering harmonics of john cale and tony conrad fused with the power and fury of the ramones — that had a meteoric impact. it placed chatham at the forefront of the burgeoning no wave scene; its influence then spread further, as protégés and participants in chatham’s ensembles — including glenn branca and members of sonic youth — folded the sound into their own. “guitar trio” remains a composition with a half-life, an adventure in sound that continues to radiate influence and inspiration.

now, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “guitar trio” on an epic scale, chatham musters an all-star guitar army for the 3xcd set, “guitar trio is my life!” the sprawling collection features members of sonic youth, swans, tortoise, godspeed you! black emperor, hüsker dü, modern lovers, silver mt. zion, town and country, die kreutzen, 90-day men, collections of colonies of bees, and many more; even tony conrad gets in on the act. together these artists celebrate chatham’s wordless anthem, with its minimalist origins, rock & roll rhythm, ecstatic whorl of harmonics, and ever-evolving, ever-expanding nature.

so, take a listen, and hear what one man can do with hundreds of guitars, 30 years, one chord, and a skyscraper of amps set to liquefy. “guitar trio” endures.

3xcd set of previously unreleased material;

  • cotton museum - untitled (33 rpm)
tasty soil press release...
thurston moore / cotton museum split 12" lp

two dudes over 6 feet tall making totally fucked noise.

thurston moore is on side a, putting you into a reverb junk zone a hundred feet under the ground where you can actually hear the grubs boring holes through the dirt & sucking the flesh off your dead pets corpse.

cotton museum is on side b creating theremin & loop scum, super rotted style. skulls scraping on rib bones over and over. created to make you forget about the insect eggs that were laid in your eye sockets. try sticking your damn patch cable right into an open sore and it would probably sound something like this record.

limited to 500 copies w/ 3 color pro-screen printed covers (printed by nick bittakis) with art by chris pottinger.

tasty soil's first official lp release!! each copy is numbered out of 500.

christian marclay: tables tournantes et disques
thurston moore: guitare et amplificateur
lee ranaldo: guitare, «krackelbox» et divers objets a meeting of three great musicians of today’s music!

wall o’ sound: last week in victoriaville’s colisee, a huge venue that normally hosts hockey matches, christian marclay was up there spinning discs as he’s been known for doing since before djs invaded the culture world. he was creating a wild sound world with records played forward, backward, in the cracks, or as trampolines for bouncing needles. he is also prone to break them into bits or fling them out to the audience, showing the greatest respect for his medium by reinventing usage.

flanking him were two rock stars - thurston moore and lee ranaldo, the sonic conjurers of sonic youth - coaxing all manner of weird sounds from their electric guitars. feedback rose and fell in heaving crescendos, drum sticks were inserted between strings, and for an hour and change, a wall of beautiful noise was erected, then smashed to bits, with no pesky backbeats or melodies to upset the mesmeric abandon. this was the apt, affectingly climactic event of the 16th annual new music festival in victoriaville, quebec, still one of the most unique festivals of its kind on the continent.

the penultimate reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge release, very close to realizing our ideals in sound (although, admittedly, not quite there yet). thirty five remixes and pieces based on the parts used to make the "attention: cats" lp (a tribute of sorts, if you will). we spent three years asking just about everyone who's music-work we enjoyed to contribute, and we were blessed with this ridiculous track selection. running the gamut from digital and analog noise terrors, beats, no beats, crinkles, etc... well worth it if you don't mind us saying so.

excellent comp of raga-guitar extrapolations from peter walker (whose rainy day raga lp i managed to find down in balmer a few years back & has been as close at hand as the two albums by vanguard label-mate sandy bull in the interim) - with additional, tacked-on material paying deference to walker’s poneering eastern-leaning style by greg davis, jack rose, thurston moore, james blackshaw, and shawn david mcmillen ...

not to knock the contemporary efforts entirely (greg’s piece is of course spot on) - but i could have really used a full disc of just “raga” and “second poem” !!!
tompkins square press release...
a raga for peter walker

a raga for peter walker will feature four new tracks from peter along with original, previously unreleased compositions by the revered contemporary guitarists steffen basho-junghans, james blackshaw, greg davis, shawn david mcmillen, thurston moore, and jack rose. more a tip of the hat than a “tribute” album, these players all share an appreciation for a gifted musician whose small yet amazing body of work still resonates.

guitarist peter walker came up in the cambridge ma and greenwich village folk scenes of the sixties. he recorded two albums for the vanguard label in the late sixties in a style best described as american folk-raga. he studied with ravi shankar and ali akbar khan, and was dr. timothy leary's musical director, organizing music for the lsd advocate’s “celebrations.”  peter walker’s 1967 debut album, rainy day raga, features one of the first studio appearances by jazz flautist jeremy steig, as well as guitarist bruce langhorne, who recorded with bob dylan and many others. rainy day raga is a gentle and beautiful fusion of eastern and western musical traditions, and one of the earliest examples of a style explored by sandy bull several years earlier. a second album, second poem to karmela or, gypsies are important (1969) found walker going even deeper into indian instrumentation, playing sarod and sitar. during this time, peter played or was associated with such musicians as lowell george, fred neil, tim hardin, and joan baez, among many others.

walker settled in upstate new york in the early seventies. in more recent years, he has developed an intense interest in flamenco guitar and, through regular trips to spain, been accepted into the flamenco’s exclusive musical elite.
