may 2008 release ; interesting “trio” take on joke lanz’ long-running sudden infant project - here augmented by free-improv bassist christian weber (often seen alongside günter müller, jason kahn, tomas korber, norbert möslang, and the rest of the swiss eai mafia) and bill “family battle snake” kouligas ...

takes range from electronically modified sound-poetry to full on harsh noise, with stops at almost rockabilly-swing territories ... and bits that sound oddly like the score to john carpenter’s “they live” sent packing through a boss overdrive pedal (listen to the sound-sample) ...

paul flaherty / bill nace / thurston moore.......................” compact disc

  • sex (3:39)
  • drugs (24:23)
  • lavender (40:46)
november 2008 release ; inspired blowout jointly channeled from the south hadley electric grid by paul flaherty, bill nace, and thurston moore ...

while i’ve waxed endlessly on my appreciation of flaherty’s particular lung/breath attributes (he’s in fine form here) - i have to hand it to bill nace’s endlessly inventive prepared guitar-scrape throughout the session ; even when they hit the pre-determined noise-improv brick wall / black hole, bill always seems to gather up what oxygen is left in the room & pull another trick out of his mind-tank ...
ecstatic peace! press release...

flaherty / nace / moore
paul flaherty - bill nace - thurston moore
cat: e#21e

paul flaherty has been a direct lifeline to the radical  free-reed lineage of albert ayler, john gilmore, peter brotzmann and arthur doyle since first coming into our vision sometime in the 80s.  at some point in the 90s he began woodshedding hard with northampton, massachusetts resident spirit-drummer chris corsano. as the contemporary free-noise-space-weird underground gathered around minds were liberated to godhead heights.

also in the 90s a young and beautiful boy-man named bill nace was drawn to the region by the living art and music here and also began inter-sonic-guitar/linguistics with corsano (as vampire belt). after corsano relocated to the uk, nace began a long-running duo with flaherty.

sonic youth-ian thurston moore had been tracking flaherty’s comet whilst perusing dog-eared copies of cadence mag in the early 90s. he eventually booked the infamous flaherty-colbourne group for their first  ever nyc gig at the legendary now-defunct cooler club on way west 14th street.

in 98 moore and his family escaped to free-zone northampton and immediately fell in with corsano and flaherty as a trio. (this group recorded, with the extended lineup of saxophonist wally shoup, for  a japanese only cd produced by jim o’rourke – which ecstatic peace will re-issue to the western world soon ‘nuff).

subsequently moore and nace begat northampton wools, a basement-ritual guitar-noise duo (ecstatic peace cd forthcoming). from time to time nace, moore and flaherty would collect their energies and throw down live trio sessions which still resonate through the valley’s ear(s).

this trio cd is a session flaherty set up in the late winter of early 2008. there are 3 tracks (“sex”’ “drugs” and “lavender”), one short, two looong.  it is a primo example of this threesome’s focus and sonic storytelling, ferocious yet pensive.

cover art by noise nomads.

thurston moore / john moloney "caught on tape" lp
edition of 1000

and the blonde, as they say, shall lead the blind.

recorded at a variety of gigs, during a tour of europe in the spring of 2012, caught on tape documents an autodidact improv summit nearly without peer. thurston moore, the self-taught connecticut guitarist for the coachmen, male slut, dapper, wylde ratttz, dim stars, northampton wools, bark haze, pillow wand, diskaholics anonymous, society’s ills, the dream aktion unit and several other combos, is in full unhinged blaze-mode here. his companion, notable son of the chowder mills, john moloney (sunburned, shit spangled banner, egg eggs, etc.), rifles through his drum kit frantically, as though he was trying to destroy a rainbow with hammers. the blend is totally berserk. while neither of these gentlemen has dick in the way of formal musical training, they are both capable of producing stun-level blasts of pure-zonar energy, and the music on this lp is at times as tightly focused as bill clinton’s most powerful penis rays. full of murky surface moves, with a lot of fully weird subtext, caught on tape is a brilliant testament to the transformative power of the pure head-gush. like a crude stone pyramid, teetering on the edge of an anasazi cliff, this music is always on the verge of crushing your entire body like a grape. but in a good way. a very good way.

the original tour edition of 113 copies, sold out as fast as kate moss’s last batch of use panties. here’s a chance to get a trade copy, with a lovely raymond pettibon cover.

the future is yours for the asking. just don’t delay.

thurston moorekapotte muziek by ...” compact disc

korm plastics press release...
thurston moore - kapotte muziek by...
cdep
korm plastics kp 3015

in april 2002, kapotte muziek returned to the usa for their second tour (the first one was in 1993), this as a trio of frans de waard, roel meelkop and peter duimelinks. on stop was at the rural city of easthampton and the audience that night was rather small, but among them were scott faust, gregory whitehead and thurston moore. that particular concert showed kapotte muziek in probably their most fluxus element: the process of making music was made audible. the amplification of the opening of the bags, searching out objects to play and from there built the concert was a new, and as of yet, unrepeated, idea. for the 12th part in our series of 'kapotte muziek by...' we asked thurston moore to expand on this idea and in a totally free setting of piano, guitar and small objects, he recreates the concerts by removing the concert and replacing it by his own playing, where the original recording serves as a score.

thurston moore is a well-known improviser, having played with nels cline, loren mazzacane connors, tom surgal and william hooker. besides all of that, he also plays in rockband.

kr009 bark haze / our love will destroy the world split 7”

campbell kneale moves ever closer to the glistening, levitation altar, with backwards bliss-shimmer, spooked chant and analogue squawk and squeal, kaleidoscoping around triumphant snare punctuation. bark haze hit back with focused power-drone guitar duelling from the heart of the bong, smoking out into tunnel-visoned, crumbled-amp chunder.

interesting debut release by the duo of susie ibarra (nyc-based free-drummer wunderkind; has played with everyone from the sonic youth axis as well as the contemporary fire music wave) and cuban percussionist / producer roberto rodrigues ...

the appeal of both here is definitely their real-time, in-front-of-the-kit playing - the first track (the sound-sample to your left) is pretty awesome; a mix of the traditional filipino kulintang & almost acid-like electronic squiggle - delivers on a bunch of fronts, immaculately recorded. there are some other nice bits of almost richard crandell-esque mbira & percussion, even a live excerpt with thurston moore guesting - but after those the disc kind of trails off, focusing more on a kind of ... i don’t know what to call it; maybe “cafe music(i.e. that smooth, in/offensively light, jazzy loop-based electronica you hear when you’re waiting for your partner to finish ogling costume jewelry in the aldo accessories store in the mall) with ibarra’s voice in the foreground, accompanied by rodrigues’ “breezy island beats” ... (not to slight their abilities; she’s got a pleasant, breathy voice that will certainly go down well w/the ibiza crowd - his digital studio methodologies keep the mix clean & clear ...)

nice stuff; wishing there was more unfettered percussion & electronic jamming on here, but the bits we do get are sweet indeed ...
plastic press release...
dialects, the debut album by electric kulintang is an album that perfectly distills electronic, dance and kulintang music. kulintang music comes from the philippines, named after a percussion instrument that consists of eight gongs it is also used as the name of the music being played. the duo, susie ibarra (composer/percussionist, vocals) and roberto rodriguez (composer/percussionist, beat maker) colaborate in the blending and creation of this filipino trip-hop.

filipina-american composer/percussionist susie ibarra is best known for her individual artistry on percussion and genre-defying music. cuban born drummer/percussionist and composer roberto rodriguez brings groundbreaking new music through his original musical voice.

electric kulintang formed in 2005, after ibarra and rodriguez, traveled to the philippines to research live kulintang music and dance. ibarra, in 2002, composed and performed with an electro-acoustic ensemble that included the kulintang instrument but through the encouragement of rodriguez to make the kulintang electric, ek was born. with rodriguez programming beats and ibarra composing the music, electric kulintang has already caught the attention of the magic triangle festival in amherst, musica a metronom in barcelona, and the american composers out front! series at joe's pub at the public theatre in nyc. these live performances have been joined by the likes of thurston moore (who guests on dialects), oz noy (also guests on dialects), sean lennon, craig taborn and trevor dunn.

electric kulintang's dialects is cinematic in many ways, telling short stories and poems to its listeners. each piece is a scene, sometimes nostalgic of a place, sometimes nostalgic of a memory. listeners of jazz, pop and rock noise, indie and experimental all have something to look forward to in dialects. not to mention the world of new composers, improvisors, avant-garde and world music aficionados who have been waiting to see what susie ibarra and roberto rodriguez's new genre-bending music will bring to the plate.

about the artists

susie ibarra
filipina-american composer/percussionist susie ibarra is known for her individual artistry on percussion and genre-defying music. "in the past decade, her willingness to step out from behind the kit and embrace non jazz forms- opera, poetry experimental sound, dance-has taken her from that initial buzz from below houston street (nyc) to international reknown as a composer, performer and proponent of folkloric music." catapano, nytimes. susie ibarra, a yamaha drums, vic firth and paiste artist, received nomination for best emerging percussionist in downbeat poll aug 2006. recently, she performed a ny premiere of her solo drumset piece titled optical illusion: 4 meditations in light at zankel carnegie hall. several other current works include solo piano dancesteps for cag artist fellow jade simmons; shangri-la, a collaboration with pulitzer prize poet and librettist yusef komunyakaa at the kitchen; and dreams, etudes for her trio. she has toured extensively in the us, europe and asia as well as performed and recorded with noted artists such as john zorn, dave douglas, pauline oliveros, trisha brown, ikue mori, sylvie courvoisier, thurston moore, yo la tengo, yusef komunyakjaa among others.

roberto rodriguez

rhys chathamguitar trio is my life !” triple compact disc set

  • guitar trio pt. 1, brooklyn (19:27)
  • guitar trio pt. 2, chicago (23:34)
  • guitar trio pt. 1, buffalo (21:15)

  • guitar trio pt. 2, milwaukee (19:04)
  • guitar trio pt. 1, chicago (30:23)
  • guitar trio pt. 2, brooklyn (16:27)
... as psyched i am for this mammoth set of alternating renditions of rhys chatham’s “guitar trio pt. 1” and “guitar trio pt.2” - i can’t help but be a little bummed at the omission of either of the boston takes (which, to my amp-damaged ears, sounded quite fine w/chris brokaw, david daniell, winston bramman, myself, and the devil music guys essentially playing a single-chord to a sold-out allston-rock-city crowd for over an hour) - but that’s neither here nor there ...

what you do get from this excellent triple-disc box are takes from the brooklyn, buffalo, chicago, cleveland, milwaukee, minneapolis, montreal, and toronto stagings of the piece during february 2007, performed with ludicrously high levels of energy by chatham himself, along with such notables as andrew broder, tony conrad, david daniell, kim gordon, alan licht, robert longo, rob “lichens” lowe, doug mccombs, thurston moore, jon mueller, harris newman, jeff parker, lee ranaldo, chris rosenau, adam & ben vida, etc ...

if you don’t know the piece ; it’s essentially an exercise in yielding what chatham himself describes as “choiring” - a heavy, upper-register buildup of harmonic movement that results when so many guitar players, over 20 minutes, slowly work across an open e minor chord from the low e to the high e, at deafening volume, while a single drummer keeps time on a hi-hat (pt. 1) or contributes with a “driving backbeat” followed by a long fill / freak-out (pt. 2) - it’s the ultimate in high-gain rock ‘n’ roll minimalism, really, and because of the open interpretation, the piece can swing pretty heavily in a number of directions given the players - hence this collection offering 5 different realizations of each part by 8 different groups ...

highly recommended as a historical document and as a testament to the piece’s lasting relevance ...
table of the elements press release...
rhys chatham & his guitar trio all-stars
guitar trio is my life !

utilizing multiple electric guitars and a single chord, 1977’s “guitar trio” is composer rhys chatham’s signature work, and a euphoric, minimal-punk classic. it’s an inspired amalgamation — the droning, shimmering harmonics of john cale and tony conrad fused with the power and fury of the ramones — that had a meteoric impact. it placed chatham at the forefront of the burgeoning no wave scene; its influence then spread further, as protégés and participants in chatham’s ensembles — including glenn branca and members of sonic youth — folded the sound into their own. “guitar trio” remains a composition with a half-life, an adventure in sound that continues to radiate influence and inspiration.

now, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “guitar trio” on an epic scale, chatham musters an all-star guitar army for the 3xcd set, “guitar trio is my life!” the sprawling collection features members of sonic youth, swans, tortoise, godspeed you! black emperor, hüsker dü, modern lovers, silver mt. zion, town and country, die kreutzen, 90-day men, collections of colonies of bees, and many more; even tony conrad gets in on the act. together these artists celebrate chatham’s wordless anthem, with its minimalist origins, rock & roll rhythm, ecstatic whorl of harmonics, and ever-evolving, ever-expanding nature.

so, take a listen, and hear what one man can do with hundreds of guitars, 30 years, one chord, and a skyscraper of amps set to liquefy. “guitar trio” endures.

lee ranaldo: guitare, «krackelbox» et divers objets a meeting of three great musicians of today’s music!

wall o’ sound: last week in victoriaville’s colisee, a huge venue that normally hosts hockey matches, christian marclay was up there spinning discs as he’s been known for doing since before djs invaded the culture world. he was creating a wild sound world with records played forward, backward, in the cracks, or as trampolines for bouncing needles. he is also prone to break them into bits or fling them out to the audience, showing the greatest respect for his medium by reinventing usage.

flanking him were two rock stars - thurston moore and lee ranaldo, the sonic conjurers of sonic youth - coaxing all manner of weird sounds from their electric guitars. feedback rose and fell in heaving crescendos, drum sticks were inserted between strings, and for an hour and change, a wall of beautiful noise was erected, then smashed to bits, with no pesky backbeats or melodies to upset the mesmeric abandon. this was the apt, affectingly climactic event of the 16th annual new music festival in victoriaville, quebec, still one of the most unique festivals of its kind on the continent.
