the north sea: 'archaic spines'
cd

the north sea changes course on archaic spines, opting to focus solely on a single instrument rather than an entire arsenal. archaic spines is, for all intents and purposes, composed and improvised entirely on an irish bouzouki, though played with a certain degree of indian and middle eastern influence.

the golden oaks (north sea + hush arbors): 'autumn testament'
cd

comprised of brad rose (the north sea) and keith wood (hush arbors), the golden oaks features road show magicians springing forth candles from wooded sanctuaries. composed via the postal system, autumn testament is a hymn to the season of red, gold, and orange. a canopy of leaves shelters the proceedings from the fog that threatens to obscure these sounds. this is a glorious combination of organic grace, blessed by the forests of past centuries and those still in their infant stages. the trees will put tears in your eyes!

july 2008 release ; entirely convincing split lp offering a side each by john “xela” twells & brad “the north sea” rose, each exorcising their mid-century electronic music demons ...
rite press release...
limited hand-stamped vinyl-only edition of 300 copies for the world.

much in the same vein as the 12th chapel lp that introduced type-offshoot rite, this collector's vinyl finds label boss john twells as xela in collaborative mode, this time splitting a record with digitalis founder brad rose (aka the north sea). each artist contributes a side's worth of new material inspired by the electronic music of the mid-20th century. far from being a foray into fusty academic experimentation, this album brings together primordial oscillator drones and ancient-sounding effects, the sort of thing that ties together the soundscapes of aaron dilloway with radiophonic workshop-inspired sonic resourcefulness.

from the introductory drones of xela's opening piece, you're instantly transported to the timeline-blurring recesses of sub rosa's anthology of noise compilations, or the mighty ohm boxset, slowly morphing from fogged-over, ambiguous tonalities to a more corrosive, distorted sound, thanks to some subtle use of prepared electric guitar. next up, "masculine guilt" takes the formula a couple of steps further, encroaching upon a more timbrally-sophisticated blend of auditory decay. in keeping with the album's theme, the music sounds aged and somehow smeared, as if the various sound sources had seeped into one another over time, leaving only sporadic oscillations to cut through the air of obfuscation. that account might make it sound a little harsh on the ears, but it must be radio-friendly to some degree: bbc radio one's mary anne hobbs has already given this a spin on air.

on the flipside, the north sea takes over, unleashing a single, side-long composition held in place by a bedrock of undulating synthesis and forbidden planet-style stray signals, vaguely resembling theremins. by its end, the piece only seems to accumulate greater density, becoming a solid, humming sound mass before dissipating reluctantly into nothing.

the cover art features the artist name and tracklisting in romanian.

total midwest bleakness from brad rose. don't expect any clarity from this one. two long form tracks bathed in the sorta distortion crunch that completely fills up a room. hints of melody for sure hidden in here, you just gotta go deep.

the north sea : exquisite idols

the first 'proper' album from free-folk's international man of mystery brad rose. the tulsa resident managed to peel himself away from ugly betty re-runs for long enough to record eight skewed slices of sing-along outsider pop. get slightly drunk, and enjoy...

brad rose is easily one of the free-folk movements busiest exponents, splitting his time somehow between running the digitalis and foxglove labels, the foxydigitalis webzine and writing his own music under a variety of different monikers with a host of collaborators (ajilvsga, eastern fox squirrels, alligator crystal moth, corsican paintbrush, sea zombies).

through all this pain and suffering at the hands of a busy and now somewhat hip scene he has managed to put together a brand new album which elegantly follows a hugely acclaimed collaboration with uks rameses iii night of the ankou. however, whereas night of the ankou explored both acts occasional leanings towards ambience and drone, exquisite idols instead shows rose digging deep into the dusty vaults of his american heritage and drumming up an album dripping with blues, folk and free experimentation. this is folk music as played from a snow-drift in tulsa, in a mid-west wasteland or a forgotten forest drenched in moonlight, it is personal, secluded and almost lonely, but rose never allows the melancholy to take over.

from the jubilant opening crackles of eternal birds right up until the rockin stomp of feather-cloaked silver priestess there is the distinct feeling that although this might be labeled as free folk, theres a barn somewhere full of like-minded drunkards waiting eagerly to get dancing on them there hay-bails. just flip to the rip-roaring folk stomp of take it from me brother moses, take a swig of moonshine and let your feet do the talking.

exquisite idols is an album steeped in tradition yet its greatness comes from rose’s ability to absorb other cultures so easily there are traces of indian traditional music, greek music and more, all hidden within the cacophony of banjo, guitar and clanging percussion. this is what sets him apart from his contemporaries and makes his music so absorbing this might be the least sacred devotional music ever made.

"molten strings, train wrecks, and birdsong"

almost two years in the making, "molten strings, train wrecks and birdsong" is an expansive compilation loosely centered around sound made by stringed instruments. strings are the primary sources of sound on all of these recordings, and the majority of the works are generated solely from them. the record offers a wealth of different approaches to these instruments. from the scathing, feedback blasts yielded by fred lonberg-holm's cello and mini-amplifiers, to the dexterous blur of c. spencer yeh's violin fretwork, from the pastoral vistas of peter wright's danelectro 12 string, to the billowy dirges of birchville cat motel, zaimph, family underground, and taiga remains.

lending the record even further diversity are joyous bouzouki renderings from the north sea, and damaged, eerie and beautiful contributions from robert horton and brothers of the occult sisterhood. presented together, the record is cohesive in the same way that the best compilations are, flowing effortlessly from track to track and, in the process, demonstrating the diversity and immense capability of all things stringed.
