the beau hunks present kodachrome: compositions for orchestra by raymond scott

performed by the metropole orchestra

kodachrome is a collection of raymond scott's idiosyncratic (and in several cases "serious") orchestral music, performed by holland's 60-piece metropole orchestra.

kodachrome presents yet another overlooked side of scott's legacy. commonly known as the leader of a late 1930s jazz-novelty sextet (which he called a "quintette") whose music was adapted in hundreds of bugs bunny and daffy duck cartoons, scott has also been hailed as a pioneer of electronica. such basta cds as soothing sounds for baby and manhattan research inc. showcased scott's little-known 1950s-1960s work in electronic music.

with kodachrome, the scott legacy grows yet again. after scott disbanded his legendary quintette in 1939, he formed the first of his many orchestras. these bands were arguably more popular at the time than his quintette. however, his orchestra's recordings which got the most attention were often cover versions of popular hits of the day. but scott continued to compose, this time for a larger canvas, and some of his more historically fascinating work often went commercially unrecorded, performed only on radio (and preserved on transcription discs made by scott, who was also a sound engineer).

in 1999, the metropole orchestra recorded the chesterfield arrangements (also released on basta), which consisted of large-scale arrangements of scott's quintette compositions, including such favorites as "powerhouse" and "the toy trumpet." that album was produced by beau hunks orchestra leader gert-jan blom, who also produced kodachrome.

the earliest composition on kodachrome, "confusion among a fleet of taxicabs upon meeting with a fare," was composed in 1935; the latest, "city of new york" and "naked city," date from 1953. all of these compositions (except "taxicabs") are given their cd debut on this release.

kodachrome features original cover artwork by kellie strøm, and liner notes by noted author and jazz historian will friedwald, and a special introduction by elvis costello.

the metropole orchestra feat. the beau hunks sextette
the chesterfield arrangements

‘arrangements of raymond scott`s compositions, originally arranged for and performed by the paul whiteman orchestra. arrangers include fred van eps, irving szathmary, joe glover, roy bargy, russ case and nathan van cleave. these charts were performed on the chesterfield series between december 1937 and december 1938, but whiteman recorded almost none of them.

gert jan blom, beau hunks orchestra leader, set out to record these arrangements. he chose to work with the metropole orchestra, one of the nest large jazz ensembles in europe, with whom he had previously recorded albums of music by roger roger and andre popp, and dennis farnon's mother magoo suite. the chesterfield arrangements called for a virtuoso saxophone sextet, so blom added the sax players from the beau hunks orchestra. the music of raymond scott has always been difficult to categorize. because he does not fit any of the neat marketing categories, this has helped give his music a particular appeal to modern audiences. in the liner notes for the chesterfield arrangements jazz scholar will friedwald observes, "what makes scott so relevant to our times is the rhythmic accessibility of his work. scott supporters lament that the composer is invariably given scant notice in histories of jazz, but it's difficult to consider the '30s quintette music jazz in any except the broadest definition of the term. the fashion in which scott used rhythm and avoided a jazz conception of time ultimately works in his favor. those wonderfully tricky, rinky-dinky, mechanical sounding pieces fall easy on the ears of contemporary listeners who've grown up with a rock and roll sense of time."

la musique qui fait popp!

highlights from the works of andré popp 1952-62

the eccentric french composer and orchestra leader andré popp (b. 1924) is best known for writing the worldwide hit "love is blue" (us #1 for paul mauriat in 1968).

but there's lots more. over a long and colorful career, popp's own richly layered recordings, full of unexpected twists and turns, were spiked with mischievous experiments in tape manipulation and featured exotic instruments like the ondes martenot and musical saw. popp considers himself self-taught, though confesses he learned many tricks from musical legends jean wiener and roger roger. popp's evocative soundscapes echo one of his contemporaries, nino rota.

la musique qui fait popp features 21 elegant vignettes composed by popp for french radio in the 1950s and 60s. such titles as "bop polka," "ciné surprise," and "skating mouse" reflect the playfulness of this music. all tunes were faithfully recreated by the dutch metropole orchestra playing from the original scores, provided by mr. popp. album produced by gert-jan blom of the beau hunks, with cover art by noted dutch illustrator ever meulen.
