the hub-bub over comets on fire and its members other projects is only going to grow with their new sub pop album, but one key building block in the cof lineage has escaped the writers‚ radar. prior to joining comets on fire, noel von harmonson was an integral (drum/saxophone/noise) player in santa cruz band the lowdown. that‚s not the only notable feature about the lowdown though; fellow-downers hugh holden and josh alper have been taking the folk-psych world by the suspenders with whysp (also featuring members of jewelled antler collective, ivy tree, and silver palms).
from 1997-2003, the lowdown made delirious sense in a nonsensical scene sick of cannibalizing its influences. parts caroliner and sun city girls garbled through the posi-folk fuselage of holden’s vision, the trio hotwired casios and disco beats into a new and nasty concoction. revolver ii (thin the herd/strange attractors audio house) came first, a distorted declaration recorded with phil elverum at the dub narcotic studios in olympia. then came the swan song, „y is a crooked letter‰, 16 tracks of mind melting 4-track madness that continues to be ahead of its time. pick it up and pretend you were first to know.

the lowdown from santa cruz, ca, follow up their much beloved revolver ii with the sandblast sounds of "y is a crooked letter." recorded by the band and slightly tinkered with by jamie stewart (xiu xiu), this sophomore album is chock full of the unstable psychedelic sounds and dance punk that have become the calling card of the bay area family, a dysfunctional unit that counts amongst its familiars erase errata, numbers, total shutdown, and deerhoof. kindred spirits these, the lowdown has the distinction of being in existence since 1997, combining woodland magic and busted electronics. other band affiliations include st. joseph and the abandoned food, whysp, leprachaun, and comets on fire. |
