the bill fay group tomorrow tomorrow and tomorrow dc3198 lp the bill fay legend is growing. up until last year, it went something like this: eccentric british songwriter records two classic orchestra-pop/folk albums in two days in 1970–71, then disappears from the face of the earth, followed in short order by the albums, which eventually command steep prices in the collectors’ hands down the years. the legend demanded revision in 2005, when both the albums and their maker reappeared; the albums finally reissued as relatively affordable import cds and the man himself, explaining to one and all that he wasn’t really that eccentric, just a feeling musician who’d had ill luck in the record industry. case in point, his new release in the company of the bill fay group: a cd entitled tomorrow tomorrow and tomorrow on the durtro jnana imprint. liner notes indicated that the songs were recorded between 1978 and 1981, with no elaboration on what happened afterwards. we’re not here to offer a guess (other than more bad luck, it seems) but instead to present the facts behind a somewhat slightly different vinyl version of tomorrow tomorrow and tomorrow. the story of the bill fay group begins in the late ‘70s: with no contract or record company support, fay had continued to write, rehearse and play occasional shows, which is how he met, in 1977, guitarist gary smith, electric and bowed bass-player rauf galip, and drummer bill stratton — also known as improvising trio the acme quartet. mutual admiration led to a union, and over the next five years, their sound developed into a craft for more than enough songs to comprise a single album intended to follow up on the intense messages of fay’s 1971 time of the last persecution. unfortunately for them, they couldn’t find a record label anywhere to take this bold step. and so the music remained unreleased and unheard ... for twenty-five years! the durtro jnana cd release in early 2005 added a new chapter to the bill fay legend. and now comes another addendum: the lp release of tomorrow tomorrow and tomorrow features a new mastering of the material, a remix of “planet earth, daytime” extending the song’s length, and the inclusion of three tracks not on the cd (“change is near,” “pear tree” and “my friend”) in place of a montage of songs (tracks 6–14 from the cd). this is a sequence that better serves the album format and provides a fresh listening perspective for those among us who’ve worn out their cd copies already. additionally, bill fay has written extensive notes for inclusion in this new package, illuminating the period in which the album was written and the intentions with which it was undertaken. the bill fay group has been an ongoing (though not continual) collaboration and even now there is new material being worked on — the story will continue! bill hasn't stood still and tomorrow tomorrow and tomorrow will reward the listener who hears it with an open mind just as the initial bill fay records have done. to see where bill's music is going, true believers know they’ll have to work a bit — and with the reissue of tomorrow tomorrow and tomorrow on lp, they’ve got another format to help them in their quest for understanding.
