  • mescalin mix (14:23) 1960-1962

  • concert for two pianos and five tape recorders (7:36) 1960
new issue of this former organ of corti / cortical foundation set of terry riley’s 60s electronic works: music for the gift (1963, w/riley processing the trumpet playing of chet baker), bird of paradise (1965, riley’s pre-plunderphonic jump-band tape-loop experiment), mescalin mix (1960-62, gorgeous extended filtered-out concrète sweep), and concert for two pianos and five tape recorders (1960, w/la monte young @ the piano - a scraping anti-music classic...)

while this set doesn’t quite have the same staying power as riley classics such as “persian surgery dervishes,” it’s a pretty damn fascinating insight into his early live-electronic / tape-based work. i’d say it’s worth it for “mescalin mix” and “concert for two pianos and five tape recorders” alone ...

this cd brings together four seminal tape works of terry riley.

the gift music was performed in paris 1963 by chet baker, with tape manipulations by riley-- the first use of tape delay to fragment, attenuate, and return time, looping tape through twin-tape recorders. the gift recordings, referred to often by soft machine members, is the precursor to the landmark that launched the minimalist movement in c.

"bird of paradise" is a radical tape-manipulation work, the earliest known plundering that inspired steve reich's "it's gonna rain"-era phase recordings.

"mescalin mix" is a tape-loop recording from 1960-62, partly inspired by riley's experience with mescalin and the work he did with richard maxfield. for this recording, the tape-loops extended out riley's window to a wine-bottle spindle in the yard; it was composed for choreographer anna halprin's the three-legged stool.

concert for two pianos and five tape recorders was recorded live at hertz hall on the uc berkeley campus in 1960 with a humorous broadcast narrative/play-by-play by glenn glasow. it was performed by riley and la monte young.

terry rileyreed streams” compact disc

  • untitled organ (20:07)
  • dorian reeds (14:56)

  • in c (mantra) (29:28)
2nd reissue on compact disc (first was on organ of corti) of terry riley’s 1965 debut album on the mass art label, recorded november 4th and 5th the prior year in riley’s new york studio/loft.

much like the organ of corti reissue (in fact; exactly like the organ of corti reissue, sans the nice artwork...) this disc also contains a 1969 performance of riley’s “in c” by kébèkois “happening and conceptual music group” l’infonie (some insight below...)
elision fields press release...
available again! terry riley's first lp, originally released in 1966 in a limited edition of 1,000 on mass art. includes the first appearance of the time-lag accumulator on record heard in an early version of "poppy nogood and the phantom band," along with a version of "keyboard studies" on reed organ, and as a bonus, a psychedelic big-band adaptation of "in c (mantra)" recorded under the direction of walter boudreau in 1970.

...

vol 33 is based upon in c by riley.

not reissued yet. this piece is based upon riley's in c, with raôul duguay, trumpet. it should have been perfect for my show in many ways. "in c" is like a kind of mantra in favour of life and its manifestation. still inspired by the '67 expo, where new ways of living were considered (meditation, drugs, macrobiotic cooking,..) this meant another modification of our perceptions within the time limitation of a music piece. "in c" has the advantage of being able to be repeated to express that all in all manifestation ("touttt é to bouttt" / everything is in everything).

musically it was inspired by la monte young's "house of dreams", performed by musicians like terry riley, philip glass, steve reich, bob ashley, john cage, karlheinz stockhausen ("mantra" & "stimmung"). with pandit pran nath from tibet la monte young and terry riley sang the "ôm" pulsation, expressed trough "in c" in 53 motives. express everything or "express toutt" becomes the life impulse of a kind of locomotive of life calling "toutt-toutt-toutt", followed by 53 wagons. all motves, languages are reassembled and dissembled by one another, as a symbol of the eternal change, an omega of evolution. the goal through this piece was to get to that ever changing evolution pulse, transforming into a hymn to life. life and its creation are celebrated through the forming of each cell and atom.

ulrich krieger - soprano-, alto-, tenor-, baritone saxophone, table, microphones

walls of sound' is about what i call: 'static music' - music that isn't semantic, gestured, or narrative, that doesn't move or change atmospherically, and isn't dramatic or has a development in the traditional european sense. if it changes it does it very slowly. the emphasis lies on the 'aural sculpture' in which one enters not just with the ears, but also physically with the whole body, and eventually with your mind, altering your perception. inside the sculpture, inside the static, there are endless changing details, variations and microcosms. in a certain way it is a modern form of trance or ritualistic music without a pre-fixed ritual.

this work is about 'pattern music', general mostly referred to as 'minimal music'. a music that uses as its main technique repeated (modal) patterns, which get varied or shifted against each other, generating 'audio walls', taking the emphasis and attention away from the original melodic pattern material towards the aural sculpture, the acoustic phenomenon. this is true for the early american minimalism before 1970, which still was very conceptual, and did hold a strong influence from fluxus ('1+1', 'pendulumn music'). riley and lamonte young had been active in the fluxus scene. also conceptual art, minimal art and op art were somehow related to and an influence for minimal music. often the early minimal music pieces were just pure concepts (pendulumn music). this new music, which saw it's light in the 60ies in america, was anti- or at least non-european. young american composers were trying to find alternatives away from extremely intellectual european 'new music' aesthetics, techniques of serialism, ultra-expressionism and accademia. the main influences were non-european and non-american: mainly indian classical music (riley, glass) and african music (reich).

ulrich krieger

ulrich krieger is well known as a saxophone player in contemporary composed and free improvised music as well as a composer of chamber music and electronic music. his recent focus lies in the experimental fields and fringes of contemporary pop culture, his old love. his works were performed by: oh-ton ensemble, ensemble united berlin, zeitkratzer, ensemble experimente, kontratrio, seth josel, matias de oliveira pinto, soldier string quartet, and many others.

he worked with: lou reed, lamonte young, phill niblock, lee ranaldo, elliott sharp, alan licht, david first, nick didkovski, butch morris, joseph celli, dj i-sound, dj olive, thomas koener, christian marcley, witold szalonek, mario bertoncini, miriam marbe, hans-joachim hespos, john duncan, zbigniew karkowski, merzbow, john white, dietmar diesner, and many more

recent projects include:
