12k (usa) #12k 2004 cd

taylor deupree1am” compact disc

  • 1am (21:21)
12k press release...
in the summertime, in the woods of new york state, the midnight insects can be at once serene and deafeningly loud. a field recording of this din of nighttime creatures was the inspiration and base for 1am.

dense, and often aggressive, 1am is a powerful work that fuses many layers of both noise and melodic tracks over the field recording. the result, best played at high volumes, is like a high-volume equivalent of standing on the rocks outside of deupree's home late in the summer night.

despite 1am's opaque and rich sound it is not unlike the 23-minute epic "stil." from deupree's stil. cd (12k1020). it is unwavering and highly repetitious but with enormous amounts of textural and timbral shifting.

1am is a very experimental and reactionary piece for deupree, created in a week's time, and emotionally charged.

it is limited to only 500 copies.

listening garden
line_032

listening garden was developed as a sonic alteration of two quiet indoor/outdoor tea spaces installed at the yamaguchi center for arts and media in yamaguchi, japan in june of 2004. the audio installation was designed to heighten visitor's senses and alter the sonic space as they sat, read, or had quiet conversation amongst the trees. taylor deupree and christopher willits composed a number of short, randomly sequenced multi-channel soundworks using guitar and electronics. the fragments of sounds, while both gentle and subtly rich, are intentionally weathered, eroded and understated, generating a sonic bridge between the digital world of sound and the audiosphere of nature.

the audio on this cd is built from location recordings taken in the garden over the course of a week during the exhibit. the environmental and incidental sounds played a large part of the physical work and are captured and utilized in the recording. listening garden is meant to enhance the experience of simply sitting and enjoying one's place in time.

this cd is best heard in a similar situation and at a low background level. headphones are not recommended.

taylor deupree is a sound artist, graphic designer, and photographer residing in new york. he is the founder 12k, a record label that focuses on minimalism and contemporary musical forms.

his solo works in recent years have explored a fusion of digital sound manipulation with organic and melodic textures that take influences from his interest in architecture, interior design, and photography. themes of minimalism, stillness, atmosphere, nature, and imperfection prevade throughout his work . an intense passion for recording and studio technology creates a strong technological backdrop for all of his compositions.

since 1993 deupree has created critically acclaimed recordings for labels worldwide including spekk, plop, noble (japan), ritornell/mille plateaux, raster-noton, disko b (germany), sub rosa (belgium), fällt (ireland), audio.nl (netherlands), room40 (australia), instinct records, caipirinha music, plastic city (usa), dum (finland), and of course 12k and line, among others. in january 1999, deupree currated a compilation for new york's caipirinha music label that he titled "microscopic sound." this release was among the first to gather together artists of this style and helped put a name to a then-rising genre of electronic music.

christopher willits is a musician and multimedia artist located in san francisco, california. striking a delicate balance between acoustic and electronic sounds and systems, christopher manages to defy genre distinctions while still defining a "sound" unto his own. his numerous solo releases and collaborations cover a broad spectrum of musical styles, and include one main commonality: willits' unique use of the guitar with custom-made signal processing. this home-brewed software, along with willits' 6-string prowess, generates a unique real-time mixture of improvised melody and rhythm. willits' guitar lines and harmonies fold into each other. notes and phrases hook and weave, creating complex patterns of interlocking rhythm, melody, and texture.

willits' has a vast range of collaborations he is involved in, which include bands, sound installations, and film/video projects. flossin, a band project organized and produced by willits, is currently working on a new release that will feature the original lineup of zach hill (drummer from the band hella), miguel depedro (kid606) and willits, plus matmos and a familiar remixing cast of indie-electronic/rock artists. christopher willits and brad laner (formerly of medicine) recently released a new album as the north valley subconscious orchestra on ghostly international in late august 2006. taylor deupree (12k label-head) and willits have released two full-length studio albums and a recent live cd. other collaborators include latrice barnett (galactic, kaskade, handsome boy modeling school), paul d’amour (tool, lusk), ryuichi sakamoto (ymo), and video artist scott pagano.

camera lucida
line_030 dvd

line is proud to announce the release of its first dvd, camera lucida. the project by russian/american installation and video artists, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand and developed in collaboration with scientific laboratories in japan, germany, russia and belgium.

camera lucida (chamber of light or lucidity) is a 3-dimensional sonic observatory that directly transforms sound into light by employing a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence: ultrasound, propagating within a liquid, triggers the formation and implosion of micro-bubbles that reach temperatures as high as are found on the sun, and emit light in the shape of sound waves. the authors of the installation, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand, joined forces with multiple sound artists to create the sonochemical compositions presented on this dvd.

this dvd also contains a data partition with uncompressed high resolution audio files of all the works.

evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand create sensory immersion environments that merge physics, chemistry and computer science with uncanny philosophical practices. having dismissed all forms of fixative and recording media, domnitch and gelfand's installations exist as ever-transforming phenomena offered for observation. because these rarely seen manifestations take place directly in front of the observer without being distorted and flattened onto a screen, they often serve to vastly extend the observer's sensory envelope.

their works have been exhibited worldwide, including shows at v2 institute for unstable media (rotterdam, netherlands), nijo castle (kyoto, japan), museum of dreams (st. petersburg, russia), i-20 gallery (new york, usa), die schachtel (milan, italy) and tesla (berlin, germany).

"camera lucida is a highly introspective immersive spatial art work creating a fleeting ephemeral materiality by intersecting ultrasound with hyperlight... in essence the creation of a sonic aurora. domnitch and gelfand's piece rejects any possibility to be fixed in space and time, but rather offers up the very definition of an unstable work of art, existing entirely for and within the perceptive realm of the viewer." - stephen kovats, director of transmediale 2008

due to the detailed and subtle visual nature of this work and phenomenon the artists have chosen to use pal over ntsc encoding to maintain the maximum resolution possible for the movie and sound files. this dvd is region free and can be played on any computer dvd drive. no region switching is necessary for television screen viewing, it can only playback on a pal or multi-system dvd player. playback in a darkened space with monitor brightness turned up is encouraged.

taylor deupree / kenneth kirschnermay” compact disc

  • may 9, 2008 (36:18)
room40 press release...
taylor deupree & kenneth kirschner
may

may is the latest collaboration between new york composers taylor deupree and kenneth kirschner. recorded on may 9, 2008 at the offf festival in lisbon, portugal, the album represents the first available live recording of deupree and kirschner's concert performances. continuing in the direction of their acclaimed post_piano series, deupree and kirschner's live work explores the intersection between piano and digital music technology.

for this performance, deupree and kirschner took an even more experimental approach than they have in past concerts: sitting side by side at a single grand piano, they both played piano and both played laptop, with kirschner playing the keys of the piano and deupree directly manipulating the strings inside, even as they both shared the duties of electronic processing and sample manipulation.

the result is a rich and complex mixture of digital and acoustic timbres that breaks new ground in their ongoing exploration of the role of the piano in contemporary electronic music.

2005 release ; a compilation of “warm, tender and calm” pieces by the likes of oren ambarchi, stephan mathieu, tape, brendon anderegg (1/2 of mountains), taylor deupree, and a wave of contemporary japanese laptop/sound-artists, mostly friendly with spekk label-owner mondii, of whom i was largely unaware until now (some of the better pieces on the disc come from the lesser-knowns actually) ...

back in the salad days of the early digital music days these sorts of themed comps were in much wider supply ; glad to hear something like from a contemporary perspective ...

text by nao sugimoto

this is the first compilation album from spekk compiled by the label owner mondii. each of the artists were asked to compose a track with their interpretations of "small melodies" with keywords like warm, tender and calm. it was meant to present diversity of minimal-style music in a peaceful "harmonic" way. and it was a coincidence that both taylor deupree & stephan mathieu created a track dedicated to their child.

the first half of the album is the more "digital" side and the last half more "analog" side encompassing laptop digital processing to field recording materials (for instance, naph's track is only made out of frequencies within the wind/air) to band oriented materials.

participants delivers these great pieces of music from various continents including usa, sweden, france, germany, australia and japan showing slight relationships between each other which kind of gives us a warm feeling of unity within this ongoing global minimalist scene. it was also my intention to present that nowadays, there are not much differences between the outputs from more digital background artists and more band oriented musicians due to their methods of composing (technology) and interests and such. evidently, more and more rock labels will release digital processed music and bands will use digital softwares, electronic artists will become more aware of small sounds and warmth of the nature. i take this positive!
