tarab
wind even keeps dust away
23five010, compact disc

eamon sprod (aka tarab) professes a romantic attachment to the notion that the world is falling apart, a terminal process only enhanced by the intrinsic obsolescence from the output of consumer culture. yet, this australian sound artist is not one to wallow in the nihilism of such poetics, rather he counterpoints these thoughts with the allegorical implications of his nom de plume. tarab is an arabic word that doesn’t readily translate into english, but it might be best defined as the ecstatic surrender one can experience when listening to music. through installation, performance, and composition, sprod reinterprets the physical detritus of the landscape within a hypothetical topography where dirt, soot, and smog emerge as privileged materials, in to which he has grafted the potential for a transcendent response.

field recordings are fundamental to this creative process, bolstered by sympathetic sounds activated by sprod’s own hands rummaging through crumbling leaves, rusted bits of metal, broken concrete, and shattered glass, just to name some of the more obvious sources. wind keeps even dust away is only the second documentation of sprod’s compositions; yet, it is an accomplished work on par with the best of contemporary sound ecologists (e.g. chris watson, eric la casa, toshiya tsunoda, etc.). on this album, sprod presents an intertwining series of compacted collages that tease aquatic references from abandoned and overlooked sites of the arid australian landscape. every sound of a pipe gurgling with water is but a mirage of sand, rust, and dirt cleverly tricking the audience’s collective ear.

with its subtle transitions and evolving sound structures, wind keeps even dust away figures into the models of psycho-geographical wandering, as sprod explores sets of roughly cut textures, resonant frequencies, and atmospheric vibrations that are intrinsic to an imagined space and then shifts into another with its particular idiosyncrasies. while the ecstasy that the word tarab implies may not be an immediate reaction to this album, wonder and discovery certainly are as experienced through this exemplary album of re-engineered sonic dislocation.

founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 14 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, christina kubisch, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, zbigniew karkowski, atau tanaka, and many more.

nature strip press release...
recorded and arranged 2002-2003
field recordings, found objects, microphones.

naturestrip is very proud to present surfacedrift, the debut cd from melbourne sound artist tarab (eamon sprod). constructed from field recordings and improvisations, using natural and artificial sources combined to form richly layered sonic environments.

traces of sonic texture created by microphones dragged through leaves and gravel. rain pounding against buildings.waves crashing inside of an abandoned factory.surfaces against surfaces, scraping against one another. marks are left.

capturing the subtle detail of decay appearing from within the heavy atmospheres of a larger space, surfacedrift explores the simultaneous layering of interior and exterior, solid and liquid. the four pieces evolve with an intuitive logic, drifting through literal material evocations of place, and hypothetical imagined spaces.

tarab has been working on the fringes of the melbourne sound world for the last 6 years, exploring the interplay of field recordings and improvisations with found objects. he has performed at liquid architecture, what is music?, melbourne improvisation festival, and variable resitance, and has collaborated with artists including ernie althoff, rod cooper, joel stern. eamon also works with video and installation.

nature strip press release...
in late 2003 naturestrip invited four artists to submit pieces that would represent their recent work using field recordings. the ‘overland’ compilation collects these results and demonstrates the wide range of approaches and techniques used by each artist.

toshiya tsunoda’s work is internationally recognized for its unique and conceptually rigorous take on field recording. his releases on labels including sirr, hapna, intransitive, lucky kitchen and wrk, have established tsunoda as a key reference for any work done in this field. reclaimed land is an acoustic snapshot, recorded in heisei cho, yokosuka city in august 1998. the piece captures an immersive and rich environment, momentarily framed. the listener can become involved on a variety of levels, visualizing an imaginary context, or entering a pure sound world.

joel stern is a melbourne based sound artist and improviser, working with environmental recordings, electrical interference, modified microphones, amplified objects and simple feedback systems. his work moves freely between richly textural surface noise, investigations of acoustic space, and minute gestural detail. joel has released music on labels including groundfault, touch, impermanent, and twothousandand. his contribution to 'overland', was produced using binaural microphones, two bottles of soda water, damaged cables and speakers. listening with headphones is recommended.

tarab (eamon sprod) has been working on the fringes of the melbourne sound world for the past 6 years, exploring the interplay of field recordings and improvisation with found objects. tarab’s - of hollow traces, was constructed from a series of improvisations, in late 2003-early 2004. using a mixture of found objects, microphones, simple electronics and field recordings, to create a cyclic mixture of breathing resonate drones, static rustlings and scrapings.

lawrence english is writer, composer and artist based in brisbane, australia. working across a broad range of media art forms, english’s work is eclectic and characterises a long-term exploration of collage, audio/visual environments and found sound. his work on overland collects together a series of field recordings captured in tokyo and new york during june/july 2003, the resulting composition acting as an audio diary of sorts – a series of abstract reflections on the sound textures, people and spaces visited while on tour.
