a bruit secret 2005

principia sugimatica is a scheme that, especially for me to play guitar and also for other instruments which fit to it, i would try to simplify the notation for compositions. most of the symbols for use were invented by myself. it is not how to compose, but is only a method of notation, and is thus applicable as an element to any compositional form of mine.nonetheless, any compositions which adopt the principia consequently emphasize somewhat a regulation--this is one of what i am aiming for.

chamber music
cd / b-boy 019

taku sugimoto has been one of the most important musicians on the improv-front for some years now with releases on erstwhile, grob, a bruit secret, improvised music from japan and many other labels. redefining guitar music with his ultra minimal way of playing, the most extreme endpoint for this was the taku sugimoto guitar quartet album released earlier on bottrop-boy. on chamber music he puts the guitar aside and composes 3 pieces for violin, cello and piano. he recreates the same sustained sound as his guitar pieces, although these new works sound more composed and could be compared to modern classical composers such as feldman. only after an hour sugimoto's guitar enters the frame together with a banjo for the short closing track.

keith rowe / günter müller / taku sugimotothe world upside down” compact disc

  • phase two   (34:44)
  • phase one   (22:11)
erstwhile press release...
keith rowe: tabletop guitar, electronics
günter müller: electronics, selected drums
taku sugimoto: guitar

keith rowe and günter müller are both prominent members of the european improv circuit. rowe, who is best known for his groundbreaking work with amm (the seminal improvising collective he co-founded in 1965 with eddie prévost and lou gare), also currently leads the music in movement electronic orchestra, an all-star group featuring many of europe's premier electronic musicians. müller has released numerous records on his for 4 ears label, including recent collaborations with voice crack, otomo yoshihide, jim o'rourke and erik m. taku sugimoto is best known for his gorgeous solo cd, opposite (hat noir), for his projects with kevin drumm (on meme and boxmedia), and as a prominent figure in the japanese improvising underground.

the world turned upside down documents their first meeting as a trio (and the first meeting ever between rowe and sugimoto), captured in vivid detail in concert at les instants chavirés in october of '99. the performance builds upon sugimoto's guitar reflections, with rowe and müller slowly tracing jagged spirals around his ever-evolving line. much like an amm performance, this is a journey with no discernible beginning or end, striking a precarious balance between tranquility and turbulence. the front cover was painted by rowe, and the gorgeous drawings and calligraphy which adorn the rest of the package come from a tour diary kept by masae tanabe.

"the trio evolves into an electroacoustic ecosystem of insect chirps, bog-creature glissandi and sugimoto's lone guitar qua guitar, whose ghostly presence soaks the proceedings with a sober grace. no strangers to the art of palpable restraint, the participants create a masterpiece of understatement in an idiom as unforced as it is entrancing." - robert lim

"in tokyo. first concert - second take"

taku sugimoto plays: electric guitar and 6-string bass guitar
burkhard stangl plays: electric and acoustic guitars
christof kurzmann plays: g3 and clarinet

date: april 10, 2001
live at: off site, tokyo
recorded by: taku sugimoto and tetuzi akiyama
compositions by: sugimoto, stangl and kurzmann

much of what has been said, has been already said in perfect form. for today's artist nothing else remains than to do what seems to be the artist's task: to repeatedly express the topoi, which cover the spiritual, mental and emotional status of mankind to represent them as well as to make them visible. and to make clear, that the development of tools, devices, or technology in total (or productive strength, as marx called it) only shows one part of the human continuation. one of the elements mankind invented to represent itself as a whole - the artistic expression - is engraved on this cd. on their cd "live in tokyo. first concert, second take" the three musicians taku sugimoto, burkhard stangl and christof kurzmann develop a fine sonic network of touching commitment, leaving enough space for interpretation. the semantics of the language they knit seemlessly unfolds into music. the restraint melancholy which is resonant at all times and the disturbed gentleness, which is inherent in all of the sounds remind us of the romanian-french writer e.m.cioran, who said: "music, this system of seperations, leaves you thinking about physics, whose starting point would not be the seperated atoms, but tears".

taku sugimoto: a guitarist, who as a dialectically turned merzbow, celebrates the beautiful strength of silence and fragility. his fine guitar-sound penetrates every musical constellation with crystalline elegance.

burkhard stangl: a guitarist, who is driven by his sound-research toward quietness and abstraction, requests and underruns the perception of improvised music with his warm guitar sound.

christof kurzmann: a laptop player, who challenges his musical partners with electronics - almost already paradoxical - to even more quietnes and precision by placing his computer-generated sounds with an exact ear into an acoustic environment. textures appear that where unheard so far; an engagement of electronics with electromechanical and acoustic instruments.

a live recording of an april 2000 duo meeting in tokyo between the unlikely pairing of guitarists taku sugimoto (heading from straight improv & noise-psych into increasing reductionism) and kevin drumm (heading from sparse pointillism into sheer full-bore noise and static drones.)

fans of contemporary drumm will undoubtedly scratch their heads at the seeming lack of “jams/z” within, fans of eai ala the erstwhile label will see this as a shining example of what the two were capable of back in the halcyon days ...

all selections composed and arranged by l except "cold was the ground" composed by blind willie johnson, arranged by l

all selections performed by l: 6 string guitar (2, 5, 6, 8, 10), 12 string guitar (4, 7, 9, 11), bottleneck guitar (1), prepared guitar (3), bass guitar (2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10), vibes (1, 2, 6, 7), drums (2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10), assorted percussion (3, 9, 10, 11), tam-tam (3, 4), organ (5, 7, 10), harmonium (6), didjeridu (4, 5)

electric guitar on "troll" by taku sugimoto,
cello on "holy letter" by masaaki motoyama

holy letters is a barely-circulated masterpiece of deeply felt self-expression. recorded in 1989/1990 by hiroyuki usui, holy letters beautifully captures the spirit and substance of a half-dozen of the key sub-underground pillars of sound. working with guitar, vocals, vibes, harmonium, bass, drums, cello, field recordings, digeridoo, and more, usui-san blends delicate folk, psychedelia, and experimental sounds into a mostly subdued but undeniably glowing suite.

the layered but careful instrumentation on tracks like the epic "holy letters" and "troll" backs the alternately plain-spoken and crooning vocals perfectly. odd touches like snatches of throat singing and bowed vibraphone leap out of the mix at just the right time.

there are overt references to the blues (the first track is an oblique cover of "cold was the ground") - but other than the occassional slide guitar touch, the connection is overwhelmingly in the timeless feeling and atmosphere. i can hardly think of anything else like "holy letters," but suffice to say if you like richard youngs, popol vuh, six organs of admittance, tim buckley, acid-folk, japanese underground - anything like that - this is an essential purchase. really, i'm not doing it justice.

holy letters was self-released by hiro in 1994, primarily to be given away to friends. a handful of copies were sold via tokyo's modern music/psf operation in japan and by forced exposure in the us, but other than that, it disappeared completely. hiroyuki usui's name pops up in several intriguing places in the apparently still underdocumented japanese underground lexicon. while he now concentrates mostly on digieridoo (and his profession of garden design), he once played drums in fushitsusha (late 70's/early 80's), a-musik (with the legendary vocalist phew), marble sheep, and several other true-underground outfits.

the cd includes the entire cd and 7" from the original package, plus an alternate version of "troll" from the original sessions. the reissue is in a gatefold folio with a 20 page booklet including previously unpublished photos and new liner notes by hiroyuki usui and ben chasny (included in both japanese and english).

another set of borderline-audible improvisation ; this time from the trio of taku sugimoto (guitar), yasuo totsuka (a relatively unknown performer; i love what he’s doing here with the faint environmental sounds from what must be an extremely noisy tokyo neighborhood), and mattin (amplifying bits of the laptop itself) ...

taku sugimoto, yasuo totsuka & mattin
training thoughts
w.m.o/r 09 cd

a trio performance by mattin, sugimoto (guitar), and totsuka (electronics) was recorded at the record shop enban, near koenji station, tokyo, during mattin's japan tour. the first several minutes were filled with noises from trains and the audience. then were high-frequency noises with complex overtone structures, namely the rotation noise of the laptop fan; and an electronic sound like the noises made by crawling insects. the electronic sound, which went outside the audible range, mondulated the fan noises. this kind of performance of performance is specific to totsuka, who used to modulate environmental sounds in live performances. these effects were combined with electronic sounds within the audible range, which corresponds to a high-frequency variant of the continuous transformation between low-frequency oscillating tones and pulses presented by stockhausen in "kontakte." whne the fan noises were about to fade away, the sounded quite lyrical. then train noises came back in, and sugimoto subtly responded with single dry notes. in summary this recording opened a new chapter in quiet improvisation by introducing environmental sounds as essential elements.

... to-the-letter reissue of taku sugimoto’s debut self-released lp, dating back to 1988, long before his “side guitar” conceptions entered the fray ... and this is about as dis-similar from his delicate, latter-day work as you could possibly imagine ; instead a pair of room-recordings of masayuki takayanagi-lineage electric guitar/amp histrionics, echoing the work of high rise’s munehiro narita ...

sugimoto’s cippolina-esque vibrato is something of a surprise, although in an earlier incarnation of his signature move, the lp does in fact start with the setup of the piece; amp buzz, guitar being plugged in, then the resulting melée ...

very glad to have this window into sugimoto’s soul open once again ...

gallery off site in yoyogi, tokyo--one of the world's most well known venues for performance of the new improvised music. off site's core event is the monthly improvisation series meeting at off site, established and still hosted by tetuzi akiyama and toshimaru nakamura. following the critical success (both domestic and international) of vol. 1, released 2002, this second cd of live recordings documents the period between december 2001 and may 2002. like the first volume, it consists of excerpts from concerts by the two meeting hosts, plus one or two guest musicians. the difference is that here, the excerpts are fewer and longer, allowing the listener to better appreciate each musician's unique style. this cd documents the musical evolution--which one might even call the off site sound--characterized by extreme quietness and sparsity of sound. this is an indispensable record of the improvised music avant-garde currently gaining worldwide attention.

2004 release ; first global transmission from the kuala lumpur-based “experimental musicians and artists co-operative malaysia” , whose various members contribute 5 of the 25 tracks herein ...

the other 20 are from a who’s who of the int’l sound-research circuit and are of phenomenally high quality (the exoticity of the label’s point of origin must have been a contributing factor in getting all involved to contribute vital examples of their work instead of 2nd-tier comp-track dreck) ...

what i’m finding the most enjoyable about this set is the curatorial aspect ... the wide variety of approaches and fidelities on display somehow all blur boundaries in a highly listenable fashion (i.e. instead of segueing the work of like-minded auteurs into dovetail-like situations, the digital pieces morph into the analog into the lo-fi into the composed into the improvised ... many labels could learn volumes from the sequencing of this record alone), making this amongst the first comps to have a “soul”, so to speak...

completely essential listening, one of my favorite comps from recent times ...
