something of an international supergroup, the founding of this excellent ensemble is a touch of genius that remains something of a mystery. hand-picked by writer and film-maker philip mullarkey to record and play live as part of the art/film project [box], the four musicians met for the first time in atlantis studio in stockholm for two short days of recording without having planned, scored or prepared any music in advance.

it quickly became apparent that this avant-garde juggernaut was heading in the right direction - the musical interplay making it hard to believe that these complex pieces were actually improvised on the spot - again, a testament to instant music making at the highest level.

the second album from the duo that is thomas strønen (food) and ståle storløkken (supersilent), now simply calling themselves humcrush, after the title of their debut from 2004. ”hornswoggle” is an alltogether more developed, varied and subtle collection of tracks, going from downright funky to abstract grooves from thomas while ståle is in his most melodic and atmospheric mood. comparable to supersilent’s most structured and accesible moments, this is an excellent addition to the catalogue.

this excellent debut release from supersilent keyboardist ståle storløkken and food drummer thomas strønen is a most welcome addition to the rune grammofon catalogue. “humcrush” is a set of improvisations recorded live in the studio, believe it or not we might add, as they more often sound like meticulously composed and programmed pieces of music. which is also to say that they’re both highly accomplished musicians. “humcrush” varies between breaknecking rhythmical excursions and lyrical beauty and should appeal to supersilent fans and followers of the most sophisticated warp electronica.

supersilent have been a solid cornerstone in rune grammofon since the very beginning and are seen by many as the very essence of the label. from the monumental hardcore blizzard storms of "1-3" to the elegant electrojazz of "4" and the almost quiet soundscapes of "5", this new album is where the sum of all things supersilent comes together in a shape of almost epic proportions.

like "1-3" and "scorch trio" it was recorded at athletic sound in halden, norway. more than ever it appears clear that their music lives in a no man's land between the genres, somewhere between rock, electronica, jazz and modern composition. as with all their recordings and live performances, everything here is improvised. that most of the music on "6" appears to be written or at least arranged, is testament to the high, almost telepatic level they work at.

needless to say, there are no overdubs. often being labelled jazz because of the improvising aspect of the music and the fact that three of the members come from a jazz background, with "6" they are just as likely to attract followers of bands such as goodspeed you! black emperor, sigur rós, king crimson, (late) talk talk or popol vuh.

the release that built an empire... no seriously, the supersilent catalogue should not be absent from anyone’s collection, especially that of those that want to trace the roots of the current wave of noisy electro-acoustic improv to its logical source. sharing a bill with these guys in rostock back in 2000 really opened my eyes to the possibilities of mixing analogue & digital electronics with noise-rock gestures. powerful stuff.
