sunburned hand of the man is a band in the loose sense of the word; it's better described as a banner under which a collective of musical freaks have gathered. so when they toured europe in september 2006, and ended up in the same room as psych/kraut/hard-rockers circle in tampere-finland, they decide to jam together and record all of it. this session was edited down to a total of 40-minutes which wanders ongoing through free folk, psych, improv, spaced out- hippy jamming & noisy-rock bizareness . the collaboration of both america's & finland's weirdest, is nothing less than sensational.

this is a great set, covering a bunch of material from the band’s early days spent jamming at the con artists’ loft in sullivan square back in 1998 (no, not 1989 as the insert claims - most of these guys were barely sprouting chest hair at that point & shit-spangled banner was but a distant future memory) ... while i do love the mutant-choogle these guys got up to early in this millenium’s premier decade, the kinds of amorphous free-sound collages they channeled back in these primordial times are much more to my liking ; far closer to large-group electro-acoustic improv tactics (see: il gruppo, mev) than any jerry yester-produced deep catalogue or bruce palmer solo records ...

an auspicious start ; let’s hope there’s plenty more from whence this came ...

august 2008 release ; ruthlessly eclectic set from variable-depth lineups of sunburned, recorded both over in the u.k. and back here in good ‘ol massachusetts ...

everything from thrash metal, poetry (quite a lot of poetry, actually), anthemic noise-punk, sparse / spacious group-mumble, electro-acoustic improv, and so on ... (my favorite moment ? rob thomas doing his best bizzy bone impression in a cavernous stairwell) ...

one of the better of these low-run, band-produced editions ; feels like their “new album” and not a throwaway side/vanity project (kind of ballsy for a band of sunburned’s stature to release their “new album” as a self-produced double-cdr, isn’t it?) - this is prob. the first single title i’ve heard of theirs that even comes close to capturing the wide range of influences & iconography that’s been haunting the various members of the troop since day one. highly recommended !!!

as always, the music is veiled in a mystery-void of plunderphonic/tape-sounds under which a series of “happening” bassline/drum riffs bubble ... glad to hear the band is back to both their instrumental origins (after a few all-electronic outings) & their one-mic practice-room fidelity following their (misguided if’n you ask me) dalliance w/ kieran “24-track” hebden - the fuzz dwelling between the spectral cracks is ultimately what makes this stuff so singular ...

we're delighted to announce that we've finally taken delivery of the sunburned 7" 'weekend at burnies', and what a long strange trip it is! its another vital instalment in no-fi’s growing and collectable vinyl catalogue, this 7” sees massachussets’ freestyle kraut funketeers sunburned hand of the man condense their name and a whole album concept into 7” of vital vinyl.

side 1 is inhabited by the murderous bossa nova of ‘smokescreen’, with its loping bassline and trapped-in-a-box vocal paranoia. then flip over for 7 more unhinged instalments, through the found-sound and minimal psych of ‘the queen of midnight’, the faux cult frenzy of ‘jesus’, oddball sampledelia and a looseness that conjures a mental image of the band simultaneously lauding and ridiculing out-rock’s greatest clichés.

this is a slice of classic sunburned, with their trademark lo-fi stylings and added low-rent moondog-esque rhythm programmes giving it the air of a secretly recorded jam session at the manson ranch. or is it a spoof? or a spoof of a spoof? you never quite know…

this is another of no-fi’s trademark hand-stamped jukebox sleeve 7”s, with classic centre label art by sarah o’shea. there are only 500 copies and its gonna go quick, so get your orders in !

any single piece within these three lps contains enough in the way of unique ideas / executions to fuel the entire discography of a lesser act ... they should be investigated upon with the fullest of your attention/energy ; highly recommended !!!

smoke song's more gentle exposition starts with davenport's santoor (a type of hammered dulcimer) leading the band into a lengthy mid-tempo groove on "smoke song," followed on the second half of the side by the short, quiet "cholita maria." the second side's 17-minute "get it?" lays down the tremolo and phase in a manner reminiscent of the best spacemen 3 comedowns, taking a pulse and riding it into organ- and percussion-fueled bliss.

the secret base starts up at full throttle, straight into a raw-sounding live outing, with flower's overdriven guitar occupying the same sonic space that gives his japan banjo / shaahi baaja workouts with chris corsano their urgency. the sound is dark and rough, almost xpressway-like in its claustrophobic atmosphere. the percolating krautrock stylings of "if you can't smoke 'em" chugs along hypnotically for over 13 minutes to close out the side. the entire b-side's 20+ minutes are devoted to the clanging free sound of "eyes of wood," where gamelan-like metal percussion dominates the proceedings.

here they launch into a bunch of divergent modes on the a-side - a (cleanly recorded ; in fact most of the side sounds “studio quality”) percussion-led incantation into a rainbow-dome floater, then into some fine beausoleil-esque acid guitar spew, then a great flutes, organs, & hand-drums bit (first part of the sound-sample), then an almost deep-purple-ian “metallic” tone cluster (the second) ... on the flip there’s a side-length “in the red” style raga highlighting moloney’s overmodulated drum-kit work alongside some static tanpura & fizzing synths ...

all amazing stuff ; a very auspicious start to the trilogy ... highly recommended !!!

joka baya offers up a set of shorter pieces on the a-side in a high-fidelity style that contrasts the dark, smoky sound of the rest of the tracks. the percussive grooves are overlaid with sunroof!-like shimmer, stabbing electric leads, gentle acoustic rain, and droning organ peeking through at opportune moments. the roaring side-long epic on the flip is a droning, phasing slice of psychedelia with moloney's drums battering the tape in between long stretches of humming stasis.

vhf#105 sunroof! panzer division lou reed cd

beneath the usual lovely psychedelic artwork on the cover of panzer division lou reed lurks sunroof’s most explosive and assaultive record ever. the key track here in the sunroof! evolution is the opening “slew plateaus #1,” with mick flower (vibracathedral orchestra) on guitar and john moloney (sunburned hand of the man) on drums. this live shot of electricity gradually ramps up from matt bower and mick flower’s dueling guitars to when moloney’s drums come crashing in after about six minutes, leading to a furious crescendo that lasts for the remainder of the 19 minute track.

“slew plateaus #2” is a lengthy collaboration with underground gadabout mattin, whose previous collabs with tony conrad, bruce russell, eddie prevost et al hopefully prepared him for the mb wrecking ball which is delivered here. the other two cuts are absolutely blistering demolition work, which in spite of their visceral impact, reach a state of zen-like stasis after a couple of minutes, ala the best of mb’s work with hototogisu.
