april 2011 release ; cd version of the immediately o/p february 2011 lp release (which appeared via kristin anderson’s poon village) of sun city girlsalan bishop’s “sixthsolo record, recorded over a period of 5 years by the ever-impressive scott colburn (each song seems to have been “produced” by a different person in a vastly differeing fidelity / sensibility-set ; but then again that’s exactly the sort of schizophilia you’d expect) ...

comes as a tiny hard-cover book with the same design-sense & photography as the lp (yes, the cover’s “17 virgins in heavenphoto spread remains, along with 16 full color pages of blown-out detail & credits) ; it’s easily one of the nicest cd-editions i’ve held in a while, doing the enclosed music major justice ...

alvarius b. baroque primitiva

2/15/2011: lp (poon village: lp006)
4/12/2011: cd (abduction: abdt046)

by my count, baroque primitiva is the sixth album cut by alvarius b and is, like its predecessors, a deep swim through mysterious waters. the 11 tracks here were recorded at various sessions over the course of several years and range from "humor police" (a track that imagines what syd barrett might have sounded like had he been a devotee of rembetika) to a trippily beatles-damaged version of "you only live twice" (the sole surviving shard of the aborted alavarius b plays the bond songbook project).

baroque primitiva is first long-format telegram from alavrius b since he lost his mothership (the sun city girls, with whom he employed his slave name, alan bishop) and it also feels like his most consistently non-acerbic — perhaps even beauty-oriented — work. the songs often have a meditative pace and are filled with a gorgeous lo-fi blends of vocals, guitar, bass and keys. eyvind kang guests on several tracks, but the bulk of the material was broadcast direct from the naked soul of alvarius b, which turns out to be a warmer, sweeter place than you might imagine.

the record also marks the return of the equally legendary poon village label, whose 1993 sun city girls lp, live at c.o.n. artists, is a rare and lovely piece of that band's sonic puzzle. poon village's productions are always extraordinary in visual terms, and baroque primitiva is no exception. the cover's meditative human mandala is a brilliant ocular ode to shifting visions of feminine pulchritude, and is worthy of the best framing job you can afford.

issued in a strict edition of 300, baroque primitiva will be available for roughly the time it takes you to draw a deep breath of appreciation. it would be a stone shame to deny yourself its bountiful pleasures.

— byron coley

lp version, on poon village (lp006), is packaged in a screenprinted jacket feature a double gate, hand-cut spine, and metallic photo print featuring 16 naked girls and was released february 15th, 2011.

the cd version, on abduction records (abdt046), is packaged in a deluxe 32 page full color erotic art hardcover cd casebook and will be available april 12th, 2011.

abduction press release...
the sun city girls' jacks creek was originally released in 1995, now reissued here on cd for the first time since the limited edition vinyl original went out-of-print 12 years ago. as robert dayton reviewed the lp version:

"this album was reviled by the more avant-hipster snob crowd. as time passes, its reputation surely grows to put it right up there with the finest of the sun city girls' diverse canon. and that is saying something!

being an act that can already alienate the unready, what caused this record to alienate their more uptight fans? maybe it's because it was their hillbilly album. maybe it's because the album opens during a still evening on a back porch with them talking about a mysteriously colored smell that predates an indian burial ground and moaning 'he wore red to keep the devil away' and distant howling and warnings that get more and more spooked out, gradually turning into a disfigured, slackjaw, downhoe preying on urban fears over its thirteen-plus minutes running time. then follows a percussive piano-based swamp chase led by a gnarled stick shaker which turns over into improperly distilled moonshine chants.

side two contains lots of little musically inventive snapshots and curios. a good time jamboree on termite wood called "useless stillborn." a civil war call to arms for people way too rot gut broken down to ever pass the draft. and oh so much more to offer from this trio who go above and beyond the call of duty of what could have been (but not in their hands) a one (or thirty) joke premise. i take it that you are already musically adventurous, well, give this a try! feels like they're shrinking (expanding) your head and preserving it in a jug.

piasa...devourer of men
(abduction, 2007)
sun city girls

one of the strangest and most overlooked sun city girls recordings, piasa... devourer of men was originally released on vinyl in 1994 and went out-of-print almost immediately. the record contains a series of short, folk-based tracks of raw beauty and intense moods. most of the tracks were recorded in 1993 right after the completion of the juggernaut soundtrack and some of the same ideas carried over into this project.

a young and enthusiastic italian director by the name of antonio pomola contracted scg to create these recordings for his new film. the film was never completed and perhaps it was only an idea, but if it were to ever manifest, this music would certainly seem to fit the story line and the director's vision; the legend of a giant pre-historic flying reptilian terrorizing an early 1800s indian tribe in midwest america.

most of the tracks were created with acoustic instruments and voice and, with the exception of two tracks, the entire score was improvised. recorded live to 4-track cassette by scott colburn, there is a strange, cohesive feel that runs throughout the album including several ceremonial and pan-ethnic tracks. some cuts are completely indescribable. reissued here on cd for the first time on abduction, here is your chance to finally hear the cigarette played as a percussive instrument in an ashtray on the track "nighthunting," among many other highly unique scg tracks.

juggernaut
(abduction, 2007)
sun city girls

originally released as a limited edition lp by abduction records in 1994, and released on cd for the first time ever, this is an essential yet overlooked sun city girls recording consisting of various electric and acoustic tracks with a few compositional ideas rarely heard or revisited in their immense back catalog. and when we say compositional, we mean improvisation as composition which was basically the scg method of operation in the studio.

the record opens with two patented scg stretched electric guitar/bass/drum works of dark beauty and then things become weirder as odd keyboards, acoustic instrumental and percussive pieces, and strange vocals start to dominate the rest of the album, setting the mood for piasa... devourer of men - which was recorded directly after juggernaut.

these tracks were exclusively created for a short film project by mark roman bodnar and kyrill kazemirovitch protsenko (a ukraine/usa co-production) which resulted in a limited promo vhs release and a few festival screenings before the film was buried and forgotten. segments from many of the ten tracks were actually used in the film, although there is much more to hear on the original full-length cuts found here.

some of the most unusual scg studio recordings are contained on juggernaut, all recorded live to 4-track cassette in 1993 in seattle by scott colburn.

mister lonely
music from a film by harmony korine
dc360 lp/cd

when harmony korine started the production for his film mister lonely back in 2006, he asked two of his favorite artists to send him music to accompany the images and scenes he was putting together. they were busy, so fuck ‘em, they get no ink here — but both jason spaceman and sun city girls were actually his favorites anyway. some of the sounds these two formidable musicals acts made comprise the all-new soundtrack album, mister lonely – music from a film by harmony korine.

korine’s previous films have found their truths in unblinking realities cross-cut with surreal images, exposing an emotional core that remains elusive after the movie is over — ennui, delight, disgust, celebration... soft-core snuff porn? mister lonely ... subtly heightens all these effects with a narrative involving celebrity impersonators searching for a place where they just can be themselves and nuns who have discovered a new way to fly.

the soundtrack for mister lonely is deceptively minimal — a guitar or piano line that blinks past repetition and blushes into something grander; a motif reappearing under new auspices; link pieces that become spotlight moments, densely worked-out, stars in their own right. classic soundtrack sounds are modern and nostalgic, which may make the progressive tilt of mister lonely... 2008’s #1 dark-horse chart-topper!

working independently and never collaborating (would you believe in studios right next door to each other? how about in same studio during different hours of the day?), jason spaceman and sun city girls employ an instrumental approach for the sounds here, with one or two chanted exceptions. their music conspires in an exquisite corpse-like fashion — without knowing what the other was doing, they’ve each brought half a body to the film, supplying the apparitional and austere sounds of a world in which everyone is something they’re not — ie., the people they dream of being.

sir richard bishop
polytheistic fragments
dc349 lp/cd

is sir richard bishop just another virtuoso or something more powerful, like a magus or sorcerer? it’s hard to tell through the mystic fields that his playing always conjures — but we can hear enough in our somnolence to tell that he is a lord of guitar among the many greats, and that his first drag city release, polytheistic fragments, gathers the glittering slivers of his sound into a divine procession.

it goes without saying that polytheistic fragments is an instrumental release — who among us would want it otherwise? in the tradition of his classic debut, salvador kali, this new record features equal amounts of improvisation and composition. sir richard’s powers lie in his ability to captivate with just the sound of his guitar, but he doesn’t completely abandon studio processes, which allow polytheistic fragments to communicate a greater wholeness: all sir rick, all the time, if you will.

as a member of sun city girls and co-founder of the sublime frequencies label, sir richard bishop is a comfortable traveler in the vast landscape of ethno-musical tradition. we have come to expect a few solo acoustic guitar pieces with the gypsy stylings of his hero, django reinhardt — and as if to tenderize our consciousness and prepare it for the ride, “cross my palm with silver” meets and exceeds our expectations. “rub ‘al khali” is an ode to the oud, a northern african lute of sorts. on “free masonic guitar,” sir richard manifests free form acoustic playing wholly in his own style. peppering the mix are the sounds of electric guitar and lap steel guitar, bringing contrast and color. “hecate’s dream” is a dreamy praise to a dark greek goddess, but “tennessee porch swing” and “canned goods and firearms” switch gears to good old down home americana and country twang.

sir richard is renowned for his prowess and mastery with the guitar, but the piano playing on polytheistic fragments shows a fluid, meditative style. “saraswati” is a lengthy river piece bathed in hindustani serenity, while “cemetery games” is a short celebratory skeletal dance, with more light-heartedness than spook.

in a record with so many spirits, bishop fills in the space where necessary and rounds out the feeling with catchy tunes such as “elysium number five” and “ecstasies in the open air.” polytheistic fragments shows that the divinely inspired sir richard bishop cannot be contained in one form.

sir richard bishopplays the sun city girls” seven inch single record

  • space prophet dogon
  • esoterica of abyssnia
just fantastic - i’d been lamenting my oversight of this, the first release on the fledgeling no-fi label back in june 2006, as by the time i’d heard about it it was already unattainable... and in fact it is... ‘cept for the ‘rediscovery’ of some 100-odd copies at the pressing plant, ultimately leading to the scant few copies skimmed/put aside for mms.

again; this is long gone folks. rick bishop recorded live @ newcastle’s legendary morden tower (check yr 60s/70s poetry journals / 80s tnb discography) covering two chestnuts from the vast scg songbook. excellent stuff. yes; a tad on the pricey side, but better than no price at all...
