... and this is the set a bunch of us have been waiting for ; a collection of sun city girls singles, all recorded during the “torch of the mystics” sessions & released originally on majora (hopefully reissues of “torch” & “valentines from matahari” aren’t far behind ...)

instrumental “power trio” histrionics for the most part, with the guitars way up front (rick & alan’s snaking lines really define this stuff...) & the tunes short & sweet ... if you’ve been following rick’s recent solo career & have been baffled thusfar by your random dips into the scg catalogue, this could be a great bringer-up-to-speed as it offers a very nice cross-section of their early short-form highpoints ...

this is easily the most listened-to disc around these parts over the last week ; highly recommended !!!

you're never alone with a cigarette (sun city girls singles volume 1)
2008: cd (abduction: abdt-040)

recorded in july of 1988 during the sessions that produced sun city girl's most popular recording, these nine tracks represent the other half of songs which were originally prepared as a 2-lp demo version of 'torch of the mystics' for placebo records in 1989. the sequencing of all 20 tracks at the time was entirely different with the predominately instrumental tracks in this collection mixed in and around the mostly vocal tracks of what became 'torch'. placebo went out of business shortly after this proposed 2-lp idea was presented to them but majora records quickly stepped-in to begin releasing most of the material.

included here are 5 tracks from early majora singles: '100 pounds of black olives' and 'the fine-tuned machines of lemuria' (the complete unreleased 12 minute version) from the single 'you're never alone with a cigarette' and all three tracks from record #1 of the double seven-inch 'three fake female orgasms' --'plaster cupids falling from the ceiling', 'the beauty of benghazi', and 'souvenirs from jangare'. the short piece 'harmful little armful' is from the triple seven-inch box set 'bruce lee, heroin, and the punk scene' (from a bay area label-'massacre at central high') and rounding out the set are 3 unreleased studio tracks recorded the same day as much of the 'torch' lp: never before heard versions of 'amazon one', 'sev acher', and 'wild world of animals'.

this is the first of a multi-volume set of reissued singles, compilation, and unreleased tracks to be assembled and sequenced to play as full-length records. vinyl editions may also appear in time.

abduction’s reissue of this alan bishop-led all-star jam from a coupla years back ...
abduction press release...
this is a cd reissue of this previously vinyl-only, limited-edition 500-copy release, originally issued on the black velvet fuckere label. ruling at the perpetual pivot and pole of a peerless sound world over the past 25 years, the sun city girls are one of the few last arab cowboys of genius.

superstars of greenwich meantime is the premier long player from uncle jim (aka alan bishop) -- a smoked out x+y= fuck you dialectic. rawer than rudy ray moore, shrewder than lenny bruce, more spoken tongue wizard insanity than lord buckley and more deranged than charles baudelaire; this is bishop's own personal anthology of black humour, filled to the brim with cranky diatribes backed up by bad ass musicians (including all of the sun city girls).

a masterpiece of the scg canon. featuring charles gocher, richard bishop, alvarius b, liz allbee, andrew mcginnis, specs one and porest.

abduction press release...
originally released as a limited edition lp of 1000 copies in 1998, this is another mysterious soundtrack work by sun city girls, featuring guest appearances by eyvind kang, the ruins and jesse paul miller. the music flips back and forth from melodic and reflective themes to shards of noise and collective improvisation. throw in some clarinet lounge music and spooked-out drama and you have the backdrop to a film that was never completed, explained further here from the original liner notes by alan bishop:

"a nervous, stuttering japanese gentleman phones me in the fall of 1995 requesting soundtrack services from sun city girls for his new film project about a secret underground alien base in new mexico most commonly referred to as 'dulce.' the real kick for us came when our new japanese friend finally announced his allegiance to the esoteric aum shinrikyo group most famous for the sarin gas poisoning in a tokyo subway not long ago. he also professed to be a former associate of aum technical minister hideo murai who was killed by a korean hitman in april of 1995. murai joined the aum priesthood in 1986, becoming the head of its science unit focusing on the current state of electromagnetic weapons development including em beams using lasers and plasma.

we flew to japan to perform a few shows in april of 1996 and a clandestine meeting was arranged with our mysterious director friend on one of our days off in the electronics district of osaka which happened to be less than a mile from where we were staying. so doctor gocher and i pretended to take a souvenir-gathering stroll down the hill and met 'hachiro maki' (a pseudonym, i'm sure) nearby in a temple courtyard. after thirty minutes of reviewing rough cuts on his swivel-screen hi-8 camera and discussing the necessity of anonymity in today's international fast lane, we were one million yen richer with an 8mm tape in my back pocket. haven't heard from him since...

  • double suicide over a saddle (2:51)
  • jazz music of the civil war (3:56)
  • a chase through sweet lips (3:21)
  • jacks creek (3:17)
abduction press release...
the sun city girls' jacks creek was originally released in 1995, now reissued here on cd for the first time since the limited edition vinyl original went out-of-print 12 years ago. as robert dayton reviewed the lp version:

"this album was reviled by the more avant-hipster snob crowd. as time passes, its reputation surely grows to put it right up there with the finest of the sun city girls' diverse canon. and that is saying something!

being an act that can already alienate the unready, what caused this record to alienate their more uptight fans? maybe it's because it was their hillbilly album. maybe it's because the album opens during a still evening on a back porch with them talking about a mysteriously colored smell that predates an indian burial ground and moaning 'he wore red to keep the devil away' and distant howling and warnings that get more and more spooked out, gradually turning into a disfigured, slackjaw, downhoe preying on urban fears over its thirteen-plus minutes running time. then follows a percussive piano-based swamp chase led by a gnarled stick shaker which turns over into improperly distilled moonshine chants.

side two contains lots of little musically inventive snapshots and curios. a good time jamboree on termite wood called "useless stillborn." a civil war call to arms for people way too rot gut broken down to ever pass the draft. and oh so much more to offer from this trio who go above and beyond the call of duty of what could have been (but not in their hands) a one (or thirty) joke premise. i take it that you are already musically adventurous, well, give this a try! feels like they're shrinking (expanding) your head and preserving it in a jug.

alvarius b
(abduction 004, 2006)
alvarius b

cd reissue of the first alvarius b record. 32 instrumental acoustic guitar excursions into a realm of weird lo-fi rustic beauty that sketch retro-portraits of several folk guitar styles, some which may never have existed before. from abrasive to delicate, these lucid antique paintings with acoustic guitar employ appalachian polyrhythms, dark melodies, flamenco thrash, alien tunings, pseudo eastern drones, cinematic backroad twang, and other hybrid ideas not easily described.

this record is a folk drifter classic and is now available again for the first time in a decade. originally released as 1000 copies (vinyl only) in 1994 on abduction. recorded from 1981-1989 by alvarius b (aka alan bishop/sun city girls) onto various portable cassette decks and includes the original 28 tracks from the lp plus 4 unreleased bonus tracks.

juggernaut
(abduction, 2007)
sun city girls

originally released as a limited edition lp by abduction records in 1994, and released on cd for the first time ever, this is an essential yet overlooked sun city girls recording consisting of various electric and acoustic tracks with a few compositional ideas rarely heard or revisited in their immense back catalog. and when we say compositional, we mean improvisation as composition which was basically the scg method of operation in the studio.

the record opens with two patented scg stretched electric guitar/bass/drum works of dark beauty and then things become weirder as odd keyboards, acoustic instrumental and percussive pieces, and strange vocals start to dominate the rest of the album, setting the mood for piasa... devourer of men - which was recorded directly after juggernaut.

these tracks were exclusively created for a short film project by mark roman bodnar and kyrill kazemirovitch protsenko (a ukraine/usa co-production) which resulted in a limited promo vhs release and a few festival screenings before the film was buried and forgotten. segments from many of the ten tracks were actually used in the film, although there is much more to hear on the original full-length cuts found here.

some of the most unusual scg studio recordings are contained on juggernaut, all recorded live to 4-track cassette in 1993 in seattle by scott colburn.

mister lonely
music from a film by harmony korine
dc360 lp/cd

when harmony korine started the production for his film mister lonely back in 2006, he asked two of his favorite artists to send him music to accompany the images and scenes he was putting together. they were busy, so fuck ‘em, they get no ink here — but both jason spaceman and sun city girls were actually his favorites anyway. some of the sounds these two formidable musicals acts made comprise the all-new soundtrack album, mister lonely – music from a film by harmony korine.

korine’s previous films have found their truths in unblinking realities cross-cut with surreal images, exposing an emotional core that remains elusive after the movie is over — ennui, delight, disgust, celebration... soft-core snuff porn? mister lonely ... subtly heightens all these effects with a narrative involving celebrity impersonators searching for a place where they just can be themselves and nuns who have discovered a new way to fly.

the soundtrack for mister lonely is deceptively minimal — a guitar or piano line that blinks past repetition and blushes into something grander; a motif reappearing under new auspices; link pieces that become spotlight moments, densely worked-out, stars in their own right. classic soundtrack sounds are modern and nostalgic, which may make the progressive tilt of mister lonely... 2008’s #1 dark-horse chart-topper!

working independently and never collaborating (would you believe in studios right next door to each other? how about in same studio during different hours of the day?), jason spaceman and sun city girls employ an instrumental approach for the sounds here, with one or two chanted exceptions. their music conspires in an exquisite corpse-like fashion — without knowing what the other was doing, they’ve each brought half a body to the film, supplying the apparitional and austere sounds of a world in which everyone is something they’re not — ie., the people they dream of being.

sir richard bishop
polytheistic fragments
dc349 lp/cd

is sir richard bishop just another virtuoso or something more powerful, like a magus or sorcerer? it’s hard to tell through the mystic fields that his playing always conjures — but we can hear enough in our somnolence to tell that he is a lord of guitar among the many greats, and that his first drag city release, polytheistic fragments, gathers the glittering slivers of his sound into a divine procession.

it goes without saying that polytheistic fragments is an instrumental release — who among us would want it otherwise? in the tradition of his classic debut, salvador kali, this new record features equal amounts of improvisation and composition. sir richard’s powers lie in his ability to captivate with just the sound of his guitar, but he doesn’t completely abandon studio processes, which allow polytheistic fragments to communicate a greater wholeness: all sir rick, all the time, if you will.

as a member of sun city girls and co-founder of the sublime frequencies label, sir richard bishop is a comfortable traveler in the vast landscape of ethno-musical tradition. we have come to expect a few solo acoustic guitar pieces with the gypsy stylings of his hero, django reinhardt — and as if to tenderize our consciousness and prepare it for the ride, “cross my palm with silver” meets and exceeds our expectations. “rub ‘al khali” is an ode to the oud, a northern african lute of sorts. on “free masonic guitar,” sir richard manifests free form acoustic playing wholly in his own style. peppering the mix are the sounds of electric guitar and lap steel guitar, bringing contrast and color. “hecate’s dream” is a dreamy praise to a dark greek goddess, but “tennessee porch swing” and “canned goods and firearms” switch gears to good old down home americana and country twang.

sir richard is renowned for his prowess and mastery with the guitar, but the piano playing on polytheistic fragments shows a fluid, meditative style. “saraswati” is a lengthy river piece bathed in hindustani serenity, while “cemetery games” is a short celebratory skeletal dance, with more light-heartedness than spook.

in a record with so many spirits, bishop fills in the space where necessary and rounds out the feeling with catchy tunes such as “elysium number five” and “ecstasies in the open air.” polytheistic fragments shows that the divinely inspired sir richard bishop cannot be contained in one form.

this is an essential document by one of america's most original and inventive unaccompanied guitarists working today. while my guitar violently bleeds is a splendid three piece gem in which the good sir branches out & nods to points west, east & otherworldly. classic spaghetti western tinged spidery fretwork (“zurvan”), fushitsusha style feedback drenched psych decay (“smashana”) and a brilliant lengthy raga epic (“mahavidya”) round out the proceedings by the sun city girls master musician.

following up last year’s burning off impurities and their recent take refuge in clean living ep, grails return with their darkest, heaviest record yet. written and recorded over the last 18 months, doomsdayer’s holiday delivers on the promises made by their previous albums, taking equal pride in smoky psychedelics and mountain-ascending riffs.

with faust conspirator steven wray lobdell and earth / sunn o))) producer randall dunn as engineers – not to mention drummer emil amos having recently become the new other half of omgrails’ avant-metal leanings are evident as always. but doomsdayer’s holiday finds their already-broad palette continually expanding with 70s european film noir and cosmic free jazz explorations to compliment the middle eastern psychedelic folk-metal the group is already known for. inviting the legendary alan bishop of sun city girls to add vocals to the mix for the ominous “predestination blues” only adds to its unusual beauty.

doomsdayer‘s holiday is the culmination of a wildly prolific three-year streak for grails. this band that never stops pushing forward has finally made an album that pushes back. devoted students of the past, they have transcended their genre to become an inspiring influence for future celestial explorers.

october 2008 release ; much anticipated studio album by the increasingly interesting (and less and less straight “doom” oriented ; most of this fits squarely into “heavy psych” vectors) outfit grails ...

guest spots by sun city girlsalan “uncle jim” bishop & steven wray lobdell are telling as to the band’s modus these days ... by far my favorite of their records & a great way to check them out ; esp. if you’ve had them earmarked as third-gen sunn o))) acolytes (despite recording this with randall dunn ; the results really couldn’t be any farther away) ...

second issue of the bixobal ‘zine, published by ri be xibalba (aka anomalous records founder & recording artist eric lanzillotta) ... can you believe this? an experimental music (fan) zine that keeps a regular, quarterly publication schedule? far-out ...

this time around we’re treated to article by & on the sun city girls, no-neck blues band, climax golden twins, charlie nothing, robert haigh / sema, phil minton, and jesse paul miller - plus tons of reviews of relevant music(s) ... and of course classified ads. again, the whole’s thing’s a joy to behold, from cover to cover, and is as essential a printed-word document as the sound projector. highly recommended !!!

note: the dimensions of this magazine are roughly 8.5” x 5.5” - i.e. a piece of letter-paper folded in half. it would be nice if you ordered this along with something of equal or larger dimensions; say a 10” or lp, just for convenience’s sake. not a problem if you don’t...

staubgold 72 - various artists - "jukebox buddha" cd

15 tracks made with the fm3 buddha machine.

feat. exclusive contributions by adrian sherwood + doug wimbish, blixa bargeld, sunno))), thomas fehlmann, sun city girls, gudrun gut, kammerflimmer kollektief, jan jelinek/andrew pekler/hanno leichtmann, mapstation, aki onda, robert henke, es, alog, minit and wang fan.

it was about three years ago whilst loafing in one of beijing's finer foot massage joints that christiaan virant, the other half of chinese duo fm3 to zhang jian, began to riff mutation fantasies as applied to the buddha machine. the buddha machine is a literal translation from mandarin for the small plastic box, driven by two double 'a' batteries, that grinds out low-fi looped sutra variants across the whole of china and south east asia. the original concept was to locate the nest, infect the breeding process with the new strain of meditative sonics developed by fm3 over the previous couple of years, lop off a hundred or so clones for promotion purposes and bounce off the impact with a few european gigs. that idea died a death as soon as the little babies fell into the hands of brian eno, a rare musical expeditionary from the far west visiting china, and the notorious alan bishop of the sun city girls, who had burnt regular paths further south but had never ventured into mainland china. only just over twelve months later the little beggar polls 88 thousand pages on google (the number 8 is the luckiest number in china) and has a dedicated my space page almost as amusing as the soundbox itself when only the pope is missing from its fanbase!

on "jukebox buddha", the first chapter of buddha version, disciples of many levels stretch, compress, reconfigure, rub and dust, fuck around with the nine floating loops clipped out from fm3's confrontational world of quiet. moving straight to level four the entry from einsturzende neubauten's blixa bargeld finds the beijing resident submitting to sweeter harmonies than those with which he is traditionally associated even eschewing voice in a move that could free him from the eternal cycle of rebirth. level two devotee wang fan, longtime associate of fm3, builds environmentally friendly filigrees of sound whilst new initiates sherwood and wimbish immediately recognize the key importance of bass to the buddha. a true zen moment is struck by the shameless humour of jan jelinek, andrew pekler and hanno leichtmann's commercial but robert henke (monolake) takes a more devotional approach with a lift from his new album of droneage based entirely on loops from the buddha machine. although mapstation sound like mapstation, in an act of submission thomas fehlmann bucks the beat and builds floating layers of naked vocal. the sun city girls prove they have visited more temples in the east than any other westerner and sunno))) arrive from a different dimension with a restraint not common in their work of late. in fact, the absence of self indulgence pervades many of these contributions, as with minit whose contribution is the only one to actually sound like fm3 but none more so than gudrun gut's analysis of the creative process employed in producing the track she has offered here.
