june 2010 release ; hard to believe this is only the second “proper” outing from zach wallace & greg davis’ sun circle, here expanding their vision to four separate side-length pieces, each featuring the duo on a pair of the same acoustic instrument ...

it’s nice to hear the “drums” piece (first performed at the root strata “on land” fest) without it’s rising electronic component - the locked-in zones & slight, almost imperceivable harmonic shapes that start billowing into your ears mid-side are unlike anything i’ve heard on record ... by contrast the veritable flurry of buzzing overtones that make up the two tamboura pieces almost seem like overload after the opening piece’s head-space clearance ... and the final gongs set is the perfect come-down from a good hour-plus of next-level deep listening ...

... you can read the art direction as sparse or endlessly complex ; much in the same way you can the music ... it appears to make perfect sense given the aesthetic appropriations & the whole package works together to put zach & greg’s whole zen-like mythos in order ... nice record !!!

following in the tradition of minimalist composers such as la monte young, yoshi wada, and charlemagne palestine, sun circle exemplifies a contemporary focus on long form drone music. members greg davis and zach wallace have shown their interest in the field most recently with extended works on kranky and root strata respectively; together on lessness, they show a deep-rooted interest in the power of simple forms.

building upon themes from their recent solo work (davis’ subtly shifting tonal work with electronic oscillators and wallace’s acoustic drone work on the glass armonica), lessness is comprised of four side long works each exhibiting a different acoustic instrument in isolation. exploring drums, tambouras (both rhythmic and droning), and gongs with a meditative precision, davis and wallace’s work seems at once both mechanic and human; the product of focus, revealing a vast beauty within the subtlety of the geometric potential of sound.

in an edition of 400 copies with full color matte jackets.

december 2008 release ; “tour merch” item from mssr’s greg davis & zach wallace, essentially a vinyl “reissue” of the self-titled debut cdr by their sun circle project on zach’s lichen imprint ...

re: the music ; here’s what i wrote about the original cd-r edition ::

most recent release on the lichen label; all releases are hand-assembled by zach wallace in his native ann arbor environs and offer of a lovely wave of art-sound, field recordings, improvisation with natural non-instruments, and, in the case of this particular title, a pair of pieces by greg davis and zach himself on farfisa, distorted vocals, and bells.

the first appears to be a zonked “cover” of lamonte young’s “31 vii 69 10:26 - 10:49 pm munich from map of 49's dream the two systems of eleven sets of galactic intervals ornamental light years tracery”; with greg and zach howling in the moonlight over a bed of organ drones ; completely fucking amazing volume-oriented dronework that ends all too soon. re-cast the gongs of the original lps’s b-side for re-iterant, feldman-like bells and you’re close...

some of my favorite of greg’s recent work; and not even a shred of computer / dsp anywhere within. excellent.

this “private” paste-on vinyl edition features the cd-r’s cover blown up to lp spec, with a lichen sticker affixed to the back, double-sided 11” x 11” insert ... mastering and sound are excellent throughout ... glad to have this document of greg & zach’s musical life-blood available again, in an archival format more fitting to the music’s divergent laminar tendencies ... highly recommended !!!

april 2009 release ; excellent disc of glowing, resonant drones from sun circle member zach wallace ...

performed entirely on a glass armonica built by zach during his tenure out in the hudson river valley, the three pieces here (played by groups of differing number ranging up to 12) absolutely hum with detail ... even with the slight microtonal nature of the instrument’s design, the music stays largely within a modal / tonal center (listen to the sound-sample for a particularly lovely bit) & the spindle’s constant rotation adds a woozy rhythmic underpinning (in fact, after a few minutes i kept thinking it was listening to a slightly off-center lp !!!)

a rare conflux of experimental-instrument design and beautiful music. highly recommended !!!

glass armonica
cd edition of 500

glass armonica is the first solo cd by musician zach wallace. when not counting fauna in the montana wilderness, zach can be seen performing across the incense sticks from greg davis in their stoic long form drone duo sun circle.

zach’s armonica, based loosely on benjamin franklin’s 1761 design, is built entirely from thrift store bought wine glasses and has been modified to handle multiple players. the performances captured here were recorded in ann arbor, michigan, in the spring of 2007. the results are not too far off from what you might imagine if you’ve ever coxed sound waves from the rim of a wine glass with your finger. now just imagine multiplying that sound a few times over until you arrive at a dense fog of resonant tones that hover in mid air while concurrently penetrating your pituitary glad. that’s getting close.

edition of 500 in an offset white case with silver ink.
