luciano berio
the complete sequenzas and works for solo instruments
mode 161-163 (4-cd set)

all sequenzas are preceeded by verses of edoardo sanguineti performed by enzo salomone

luciano berio greatly enriched the repertoire for solo instruments and voice with his series of sixteen sequenzas and works such as psy, gesti, rounds and fa-si. written between 1958 and 2002 and spanning almost five decades of berio's creative career, these solo compositions reflect some of his most crucial aesthetic ideas and compositional techniques.

the first complete recording of the sequenazs: this set includes the world premiere recording of sequenza xiv for solo cello, written for ex-arditti quartet cellist rohan de saram, who performs the sequenza here.

the first complete recording of the alternate sequenzas: at the request of many soloists, berio arranged several of the sequenzas for alternate instrumentation. this set compiles all of berio's alternate sequenzas for the first time, also with some first recordings.

plus all of berio's works for solo instruments: also collected together for the first time, berio's solo works and personal arrangements (with the exception of those for solo piano, which would be a full cd in itself) are included.

berio was good friends with the italian author edoardo sanguineti, who began writing the verses for individual sequenzas in 1994. in performance, each verse can be recited before its respective sequenza. all of the sanguineti verses are presented here before each sequenza, as performed by the distinguished italian actor enzo salomone.

an international all-star cast of performers: mode had the good fortune to begin this set with the help of mr. berio, who suggested some of the performers here. they include members of the arditti quartet and ensemble modern along with other distinguished soloists.

104-page book of extensive notes and biographical information packaged with 4-cds in deluxe slipcase.

new world press release...
donald erb’s mature style—encompassing elements of jazz, electronic music and serialism within traditional forms—is captured on this recording of five wind ensemble and chamber works dating from 1971 to 1991. when asked what he tries to achieve through his music, erb responds, “the clarity of classical music, the passion of romanticism, and the freedom of jazz.” that succinct response pretty much captures the essence of these angular pieces, scored for winds, brass and percussion, unmollified by strings. improvisation, or at least its quality of spontaneity and unlimited choice, is incorporated. the ensemble pieces develop massive walls of sonority and crushing climaxes while solo passages push instrumental boundaries and the limits of the players’ capabilities in terms of range and technique.

november 2008 release ; super-deluxe double-lp edition commemorating the emerald anniversary of pauline oliveros, stuart dempster, and david gamper’s deep listening band ...

four extended pieces (only one of which, the one excerpted via the sound-sample, has been released prior to this set) each pressed onto its own side of a 180-gram lp, housed inside a double-wide jacket, housed inside a slip-case lp sleeve ... other than the site-specific opener (recorded in a quarry) , the rest all feature the trio in concert-performance; heavy on the live-electronic tip (c/o oliveroseis system) & the playing is fantastic throughout ... highly recommended !!!
taiga press release...

the deep listening band is an improvisational group founded in 1988 by pauline oliveros with members david gamper and stuart dempster. now, 20 years later, the trio celebrate an anniversary of improvisation, innovation and commitment with their first-ever vinyl release.

this vinyl-only document contains four side-long tracks, one reissued and three previously-unreleased. "cannery row" was originally available on the troglodyte's delight (1990) album and captures the band in tarpaper cave, which dempster recalls as "an old limestone quarry near rosendale, new york that had lovely dripping water sounds and valhalla-like mists." the previously-unreleased tracks were gathered from three separate live performances at the sounds like now festival, sound exchange american composers forum, and engine27, a 16-channel installation of special speakers.

the audio was mastered for vinyl by james plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in a limited edition of 500. the records come packaged in a custom-designed slipcover and a jacket with doublewide spines. the slipcover features two exquisite photographs and is dual-finished with a gloss front and matte back. the jacket is printed on a cardboard brown stock with the pocket flooded green and features three rich essays including: an introduction by david felton, a short history by dempster and information about the expanded instrument system (eis) from oliveros.
