april 2008 release ; a lovely set of pieces from paul “strategy” dickow leaning more towards the horizontal applications (read: textural / ambient / drone / whathaveyou) than his more known dancefloor antics ...
audio dregs press release...
strategy - music for lamping cd (audio dregs recordings: adr068: 708527506820)

strategy's paul dickow has been a longtime cornerstone player in portland, oregon's electronic and experimental music community. he was once a drummer in the punk group emergency, a keyboard player in jazz/post-rock's fontanelle, played drums and electronics in nudge, djs eclectic disco and techno sets, and also remixes and produces dancefloor bangers as well as ambient, abstract pop expressions under his solo moniker strategy. he has built up a name releasing acclaimed albums for kranky and 12"s for labels such as orac (seattle) and dreck (london) and also by founding the premier cascadian freedom music record label known as community library

for years paul and audio dregs have been comrades and collaborators and now we are proud to bring you his latest offering that collects strategy's rain-soaked chillout recordings and slow motion filtered dubscapes. these are the tracks rescued from the mornings after the dance parties and longer compositions collected from his studio in moss covered corners of green cascadian forest caverns.

"music for lamping contains six years' worth of music that can roughly be called ambient - perhaps "meditative" is a better word. all of this music combines my interest in blurring/expanding/clouding processes--such as granular synthesis, vocoding, and bucket-brigade delay -- with happenstance sound sources, such as field recordings or a favorite record sitting around the studio. the earliest music dates to a 2002 cd that was never released, entitled strategy at beacon rock, which was intended as a 'gentle' or 'atmospheric' treatment of plundered audio. the material from 2004 onwards dates to a period of soundwalks in my neighborhood of northwest portland (a perfect strolling zone). taken altogether, these pieces form a traceable thread through my work where i use my usual raw materials to reach a more liquid, spontaneous end result." -paul dickow

kranky press release...
artist: strategy
title: future rock
catalog #: krank108
formats available: cd
release date: may 21, 2007

this is paul dickow's second full length for kranky and third as strategy. he is extremely busy running the community library label, which will be releasing a 12" version of this album's title track, while also collaborating in the trio nudge, and recording and performing solo work.

three years have passed since drumsolo's delight, and strategy finally comes forward with a new full-length. his third album to date, future rock focuses strategy's diverse interests into a single point, while still drawing directly from the dense, shimmering sonic language established on delight.

based on a refined studio process that incorporates multi-tracked live instrumentation, archaic synthesizer equipment, archived recordings of improvisations and band practices, digital sound design, and sound of non-musical origin, the album is a polyglot solution of genres. musical quotations, discrete sonic jokes, and skewed musicological impressions are blended into a dream-like, impressionistic musical composite which confounds and compounds music's past, present, and future. a gauzy, vibrating curtain of sound, much like the one that made drumsolo’s so distinctive, ties together all the songs as do the signature wurlitzer electric piano and old-school spring reverb.

incorporating compositions that have taken years to develop, a handful of close collaborators (including his cohorts from the band nudge), and using source material that dates as far back as 2000, future rock is easily strategy's most complex, narrative, ambitious and overtly "pop" record to date; as well, it's practically a thesis statement for his vision of a genre-free musical world. to date you've heard strategy dabble in everything from headphone-oriented ambient music to house and dub; this is the work that brings it all together.

kranky press release...
artist: strategy
title: drumsolo's delight
catalog #: krank066
formats available: cd
release date: april 26, 2004

drumsolo's delight is the second album paul dickow has made under the name strategy. dickow was a fan of synth-pop who simultaneously learned to play keyboards, the drums and program. he went on to drum in the art punk outfit emergency, play keyboards in fontanelle and multiple instruments in nudge.

strategy wires together dickow's programming and performing experience via a hodgepodge of table top electronics, computers and realtime musicianship. combining a granular ambient aesthetic with an abstract, percolating rhythmic sensibility, strategy unites small parts into complete melodies motivated by complex pulsations. the portland mercury described dickow as "portland's laptop prankster/meister of disquo."

paul dickow has been performing and djing at dance clubs, rock clubs, dance parties and galleries up and down the west coast. he releases music on his archigramophone imprint and curates monthly community library nights at the dunes club in portland. strategy has released dance singles (with seattle's orac label), remixes and a debut album, strut, on the portland-based outward music label in summer 2003.

drumsolo's delight weds the subtle rhythmic promise of the early work anthologized on strut with a discreet ambience. the album flirts with the tensions of hyper-modern digital vastness on one hand, and the gritty immediacy of live dub mixing on the other.

drumsolo's delight moves towards the points of overlap between rhythm and cloudiness- reaching towards the grey area where sounds share active and passive characteristics. drumsolo's delight is strategy's most thematic work to date, and aside from the technical syntheses achieved in the studio, the album is an accurate snapshot of several years' of work creating music concerned with geography/place, people, memory, and weather.
