my cat is an alien / steve roden : 'cosmic debris vol. ii'
cd

cd re-issue of the second installment in the "cosmic debris" split art-lp series set up by maurizio and roberto opalio, aka my cat is an alien, on their own opax records. the vol.ii sees the two space brothers from torino, italy, alongside californian visual and sound artist steve roden. what makes this collaborative release so peculiar is the natural interactive exchange occurred between the artists, and that came out from the concept behind the experience itself.

roden's contribution thus represents the unique experience of hearing him literally 'playing' guitar chords. his first track, "e-bows and rainbows", developes through the minimal and reiterated sound architecture of roden's so-called 'possible landscapes', where singular source materials such as objects and field recordings are abstracted through electronic processes to generate new audio spaces, characterizing the artist's aesthetic in sound works; the following "my dog is a yufo" is so far a pretty unheard aspect of roden's ability to shape a fascinating intimate piece only with an old electric guitar and his own fingers, and it also demonstrates how a true artist can re-create his own personal universe, no matter what kind of source utilized.

on their side, mciaa deliver another piece of 'cosmic debris', centered on multilayered echoes of voice, toy piano, space drones raising from a distant horizon, and their own physical gestures performed during the recording, which reproduce themselves through the air, re-play and give birth to echoes of real time that overcomes its own essence, becoming field recording itself, mirror and spectre of its immutability. their track entitled "everything waves like cosmic debris" also features ramona ponzini's japanese bells contribution.

steve roden
light forms (music for light bulbs and churches)
cd / semi 003

this is the third release on the semishigure label that specializes in music & sound works related to films or installations from the visual arts. light forms is the new album from calfornia based musician/artist steve roden which contains two pieces that are constructed from the sound material of two installations that he made in germany. both of these pieces started with the same sound: a group of small glass light bulbs handled acoustically. these acoustic sounds were then processed electronically and for this cd version put together into two beautiful, delicate and quiet compositions that are highlights in the already impressive oeuvre of this artist. 'truth is the bell' was created for an evening of performances in saarbruecken related to the theme of light. 'bell is the truth' is the soundtrack of a filmwork installation realized in berlin in the singuhr-hoergalerie. contains a wonderful 12-booklet with photos of the installation and the film.

debut release on this new label run by up-and-coming composer / sound-designer asher thal-nir (known to most simply by his forename, asher) ; based right here in good ‘ol somerville ...

essentially this is a “reworkings” collection of materials by asher himself, sourced back to a cassette his early minimal loop-based compositions ... and i must say, given the material, he’s chosen a fine range of subjects to transform his music, ranging from steinbrüchel’s grainy, lo-bit digital smear to heribert friedl’s almost raga-ish drone (listen to the sound-sample) to perhaps ubeboet’s most faithful reading, leaving the tape-hiss of the original materials intact ...

a very nice disc & an auspicious start for this new domestic imprint ...

sd-001: graceful degradation: variations
2.2008
cd limited to 500 copies
featuring: heribert friedl, john hudak, jason kahn, kenneth kirschner, steve roden, steinbrüchel and ubeboet.

the source recording for the compositions featured on this album still exist on a single 90 minute cassette, made by the intermagnetics corporation from santa monica, california. there are still some bits of led zeppelin here and there which remain among my recordings, but mostly the tape is full of recording i made. i remember working with this tape for several months over the summer and into fall of 2005, in my apartment in brooklyn; i would spend hours going through the material and trying to find different combinations of the recordings of the sounds which are stored on it. after a certain period of time working with the material i put together some pieces for an album release and thought i was done. but in the end i went back and continued working, it is the material from this second period of work which has been used by the artists featured on this release.

the concept of graceful degradation in relation to memory as well as system failure, seemed quite fitting to the work i was doing, as well as to the work of other sound recording artists. there is a relationship that develops between our own memories and recordings made and archived using various data storage and retrieval technologies which i am very interested in; i initiated this project with this interest in mind.

as a continuation of the graceful degradation of my original recordings i asked seven artists to use the material in their own ways to create a new piece. each artist put the material into their systems of working with sound and came up with the results featured on this album. i am very honored to have their contributions and pleased to present them on this first release on sourdine.
