mighty three-cd set documenting a residency by minneapolis free-improv legend milo fine (previous lps on fusetron, plus a whole buncha sides for hat-art in the late 70s) & improv-partner steve gnitka, trio’ed & quartet’ed up, company-week style, against a spate of area free players ...

lovely triple-disc set (c/o longtime mms customer michael mann) ; each copy features a different hand-executed artwork-set (see below for a few examples). have always found fine an under-rated player ; his range on whatever instrument he chooses to grab is always impressive ...

surges/suspensions, comme toujours
shih shih wu ai

milo fine: piano, drums, marimba/electronics, clarinet, clarinet/electronics, alto clarinet, bowed cymbals
steve gnitka: guitar
scott newell: tenor sax, wood flutes, "paper"
john obrien: trumpet, flugelhorn
elliot fine: percussion
jason shapiro: piano, synthesizer

in 1998, after attending close to every one of the ensembles bimonthly concerts at the west bank school of music for well over a decade, michael mann decided the group was long overdue for the opportunity to once again present its work in a concert hall. (the school, you see, is actually an old house; the ensemble presenting its work in the "living room".) so, he booked a hall on a local college campus for "two evenings of improvised music", wherein milo fine and steve gnitka, the nucleus of the ensemble, collaborated with four of their most stalwart associates -- scott newell, john obrien, elliot fine and jason s. shapiro -- in trio and quartet formats. he also made arrangements for the event to be recorded. thus, this triple cd features the vast majority of the music played during those two evenings.

  • get down! shove it! it’s tango time! (2)
1986 release ; sealed, original copies of this private-issue duo date by milo fine & steve gnitka’s “free jazz ensemble,” as recorded back in 1981 ...

something about this one’s putting me in a real good mood ; could be the pre-recorded tape of go-go drums that cuts in & out throughout the first side, or the weird spoken interjections, or the long, gated clavinet outro that almost recalls terry riley ... either way, it’s all win. a great place to start w/ the sswa titles ...

1980 release ; sealed, original copies of this private-issue trio date, featuring venerable minneapolis-area free-improviser milo fine and his “free jazz ensemble(usually just guitarist steve gnitka, but here aided & abetted by anthony cox as well) ...

here the three get down in varying combinations, including a few takes involving self-built instruments such as the “gritkaphone” and “m-drums(not sure about the specific configurations of said - sounds like an array of tin-cans set up on stands from the bit excerpted via the sound-sample) ...
