"this project started with a commission from eighth blackbird and ben broening to create a multi-channel composition for the university of richmond's third practice electroacoustic music festival. i wrote out a set of instructions for each musician and recorded them separately from the rest of the group. the first sessions were with molly, michael, nick and lisa. i started to work with their sounds, layering, processing, adding and eliminating elements until i found something that felt musical and spatial. the result was a 10-channel mix of 'rush and lullaby (2).'

the instructions were simple:, play a pattern of 3 notes, play the sound of an animal, etc. interpretation was wide open. molly played the sound of a charging baby boar on her flute. lisa played a short pattern on the piano that i used over and over again. following the premiere of 'rush,' i did another session with matthew and matt. this resulted in 'one violin.' from there i just kept on going with the sounds i had recorded to produce the rest of the record.

the i.k.k.-project started in 1794, when christoph schmid wrote the lyrics for ihr kinderlein kommet, using a melody by contemporary composer johann abraham peter schulz. it was performed soon after in thanhausen an der mindel for the first time. in 2001, a few weeks before xmas, i recorded my daughter sonja (aged 5 then) singing some of her favourite xmas tunes.

wonderful recordings. her singing is full of emotional power and she even hits the right notes from time to time. the interesting moments are when her voice is moving around those notes. instead of burying those recordings in the archive i came back to them soon after, because jos moers (the owner of the label meeuw muzak) was asking me to contribute to a series of xmas 7"s he does once every year. so i recorded one for him early in 2002 for 2003’s yearly event: merry merry. side 2 has a funny piece composed from a transformed ihr kinderlein kommet.

when the 7" was done i had the impression that the transformed sounds had a quality of their own, so i used them for further transformations, as well as to compose a new piece of about 15 minutes: i.k.k. – purpurscharlachrot. following my inclination for collaborative works i thought that this material could be of interest, not only for me, but also for other artists to work with. so i prepared a cd-r with the existing versions and some basic material from the piece. pieces have been submitted by dan warburton, andrew deutsch, chris halliwell, strotter inst., stephen vitiello and frisch/rainey/wehowsky.

ralf wehowsky

founder of the group p.d. (1981 renamed p16.d4) and the label wahrnehmungen (1982 renamed selektion) in 1980. p16.d4 was one of the most influential groups in experimental industrial music. they developed concepts of material exchange long before the term «remix» was even coined. for their live appearances they were equally at home in punk and no wave festivals and at the holy grails of academic avantgarde like the internationale ferienkurse für neue musik, darmstadt.since the early 1990s wehowsky works under his own name (rlw). his quiet, highly complex style of composition – based on artifacts of instrumental and electronic sound – is influential for numerous artists in the fields of electronic and improvised music. some reflections on his work can be found on tulpas, a 5cd-box-set, featuring more than 50 artists performing their versions of his pieces (jim o´rourke, brume, achim wollscheid, toshiya tsunoda, john duncan, antanas jasenka, ryoji ikeda, john watermann and others).

his recent work embraces musique concrète improvisée (with bruce russell, and johannes frisch, among others) as well as projects based on extended material exchange (i.k.k.).

listening to donald judd
stephen vitiello
sr245

this piece is a work in progress evolving from the numerous recordings vitiello made of the sculptures of american artist donald judd in marfa, texas. high-precision microphones are placed directly on the surface of judd's "specific objects." they capture a subtle combination of sounds resonating through the artwork and ambient sounds. indubitably, i see this work as a tribute (and what better form for a tribute than a new work of art) to one of the greatest american artists of the 20th century.

these recordings were created during an impromptu residency sponsored by the marfa theater and the chinati foundation. the results were a performance (with and without tetsu inoue) and two fairly large sound installations. i was there to somehow record the elusive marfa lights that appear almost nightly in the sky. they were easy to see but impossible to record with my small photocell and borrowed telescope. sounds were captured in and around the donald judd installations at chinati, in a glider, in fields of grasshoppers and along some unknown street. marfa is a very quiet town. the most significant sound event is when the train comes through each day which can happen at any time of day or night. 3 years after my visit, most of what i experienced in marfa has probably been modified by memory. the sound of the train is the only recognizable source sound that has been left fairly unhurt by time-stretching and other forms of electronic and mental processing.

i have found that i approach an installation by looking to create a soundtrack for that space. in the case of the world trade center residency, i found that the sounds already existed but were inaccessible - the sound of thunder, wind, airplanes, helicopters, the sway of the building had all been expertly shut out by thick windows that would not open. it became my task to bring those sounds back into the room and in a sense, to bring it to life. i am interested in the physicality of sound and its' potential to define the shape, feel and colour of a room. i am also interested in exploring how people receive sound and to what extent i may create a work, with no visual component, and offer an environment in which a gallery or museum viewer will be enticed into listening with the attention that they would give to a visual or audio-visual work.

donald judd : a short biography
donald judd was born june 3, 1928, in excelsior springs, missouri. he registered at the art students league, new york, in 1948 but transferred a few months later to the college of william and mary, williamsburg, virginia. in 1949, he moved back to new york to study philosophy at columbia university while he took art classes at the art students league. judd challenged the artistic convention of originality by using industrial processes and materials-such as steel, concrete, and plywood-to create large, hollow minimalist sculptures, mostly in the form of boxes, which he arranged in repeated simple geometric forms. in 1971, he participated in the guggenheim international award exhibition at the solomon r. guggenheim museum, new york, along with other minimalist and conceptual artists. judd moved to marfa, texas, in 1972. . during his lifetime, judd publisheda large body of theoretical writings, in which he rigorously promoted the cause of minimalist art; these essays were consolidated in two volumes published in 1975 and 1987. the artist died february 12, 1994, in new york.
