stephen o’malley / steve noblest. francis duo” double long playing record set

  • untitled (1)

april 2012 release ; ... taken aback some by this rather subtle set of guitar & trap-set duos, as far removed from anything else o’malley has done in the past as is imaginable, largely sticking to a framework borrowed from fushitsusha’s later recordings (“pathetique” for some reason comes to mind) ...

... minimal, moody environments channeled via straight guitar-reverb-amp evocation(s) ; noble being perhaps the best possible drummer to “get” the mood-set o’malley was going for (he sounds fantastic here, augmenting the minimal, phrase-oriented accents with asian percusson elements) ... between this & the recent ktlv” set we’re suddenly getting a much clearer indication of stephen’s inner monologue ; gotta say he’s making some of his best music these days ...

st francis duo 2lp
stephen o'malley & steve noble

having played together in æthenor for the last couple of years, steve noble & stephen o'malley came together to play as a duo at cafe oto in 2011. these recordings are the results of these two hot and sticky nights in east london.

noble is a regular at bo' weavil recordings, having appeared on over nine recordings for the label, and a lynch pin in london's improvising community. steve noble studied with nigeria master drummer elkan ogunde and in the early 1980s and over the last 20 years has played with most of the great players from 4 corners of the globe.

stephen o'malley predominantly a guitarist, producer and composer from seattle who has been at the centre of avant-garde / drone metal, best known for his group sunn0))), and also a prolific collaborator with many of the finest improvisers. so it was bound to be a memorable night of music to see these two to meet.

noble sets the recording off with a full tribal charge, while stephen instead of firing off a shard of ecstatic notes and chords, coaxed his guitar into singing a slow ever growing roar. but soon the two are of into some wildest creative rampages - exciting drum and guitar territory, sounding at times not too dissimilar to haino's fushitsusha, brutally beautiful shredded riffs from o’malley met with noble's exuberant rhythmic force . over 2 slabs of vinyl the memory of these 2 nights can be heard in full violent sonic attack.

well, that took longer than expected. finally the 5th ktl studio album is ready for release.

whereas their previous album iv was recorded and made in a relative short period in a more traditional rock environment, v turns full circle, takes its time and tackles the complex working processes of the european avant garde.

rooting themselves in such legendary electronic music studios such as ems in stockholm and grm in paris, o’malley and rehberg have delivered a rich set of sound experiments far removed from harsh metal / noise blizzards of their early albums.

they took a step further by inviting icelandic composer jóhann jóhannsson to orchestrate phill 2, resulting in a towering storm monumental classicism. finally, ‘last spring: a prequel’ turns the whole album on its head with abstract alien textures of the gisèle vienne installation of the same name., with text by dennis cooper spoken with devout intensity by long term vienne collaborator jonathan capdevielle.

with full colour artwork by mark fell, v is ktl’s most sophisticated work to date.

january 2009 release ; 4th album from stephen o’malley & peter rehberg’s kindertotenlieder...

this time around, the duo decamped to hoppy kamiyama’s gok sound studio, enlisting jim o’rourke for production duties as well as boris’ drummer atsuo (on the occasional thud / gong-blast) ; unsurprisingly this led to arguably the band’s most “accessible” outing, with the disparate digital-sound / guitar elements far less distant / misted than in prior outings ... hell, there’s even a regular “pulse” to some of this stuff (listen to the sound-sample) ; greatly removed from the beat-less vapor-trail of room-tone spectralia evident on the first three ...

a nice one, definitely ; can’t say for certain how i rank it amongst the shelf-load of ktl produkt until i give it a few more spins, but it fits the mood of this particularly cold / frost-bitten morning just fine ...

and how things have evolved. long awaited new album by the ongoing duo of stephen o’malley and peter rehberg.

ktl’s first full length release that is not commissioned work for theatre or film, showcases their approach to composition and structure as a highly active live band. whereas the ‘kindertotenlieder’ trilogy of 1, 2 and 3 were blurred washes of fog and noise polished in by ambient shine, iv  is a more direct and demanding beast, referencing such diverse projects as; volume era swans, mecca period cabaret voltaire, phase one wire, fushitsusha and this heat .....

developed and composed over the spring and summer of 2008, ktl brought the material to tokyo the following september and worked with jim o’rourke at the desk & controls, iv is a stunning new direction and great addition to both artists' already impressive canon.

the opening and shortest track, ‘paraug’ is a dark shadow of previous ktl sounds, with its blowtorch riffs and sub bass rumbles. this leads the way for the album's monster ‘paratrooper’. over 21 minutes of driving bass pulse interwoven with razor sharp guitar from o’malley & synth and organ blasts from rehberg. atsuo, from japanese top-rockers boris, glues it together with his arhythmic and punishing drumming. ‘wicked way’ is a breezy upbeat number, which if we were that way inclined would be the album's single. ‘benbbet’ on the other hand is whole different ball game: a distant guitar loop is joined by slamming no step beats and making way for a guitar riff to straddle all valleys and computer bass rattles. possibly ktl’s most detailed recording. ‘eternal winter’ is an exercise in black frozen resonant harmonics, whereas ‘natural trouble’ is a slowly evolving twister of a track which is both spontaneous and focused.

devastatingly beautiful four part follow up to the acclaimed debut cd recorded in a former abattoir in angers, as well as a 16th century manor in the extreme west of france.taking the blueprint that was laid out on the first record even further, with the ecstatic build up of ‘theme’, the near psychedelic ‘abattoir’, and closing with the twisted romanticism of the closing ‘snow 2’. an upgrade both artistically and emotionaly.

as with the first cd elements appeared in the finished version of the theatre piece ‘kindertotenlieder’ by gisele vienne and dennis cooper, which was premiered in brest, france, march 2007.

threatening new collaboration taking in parallel worlds of extreme computer music and black metal. ktl is stephen o'malley (sunno))), khanate) and peter rehberg (pita).

a six part collision amongst the increasingly fading prescences between the light and the dark. this work came about as the two were composing sound and music for a piece by gisèle vienne and dennis cooper, entitled 'kindertotenlieder'. it must be stated that this cd is not the soundtrack to said piece, but a separate project. however, elements may appear in the finished piece which is to be premiered in brest, france, march 2007.

pieces were recorded in a resistance fortress in southern france during a thunderstorm. others in a wintergarden drenched in the sunlight.

produced for banks violette exhibitions at barbara gladstone & team galleries, nyc 28th june - 17th august 2007.

6°fskyquake is an audio composition designed in 2001 but explored conjunction with the american sculptor banks violette's solo shows in summer 2007. actually, two shows at two different galleries, barbara gladstone & team, running simultaneously for the duration. the interaction of sound and violette's work revisited concepts touched in prior collaboration of loss, absence, residual energy of a missed evocative experience.

the composition was captured at a recording session during the installation process in team gallery, and later transfered to gladstone as recorded playback in the public. designed for 3 separate systems consisting of powered 18" subwoofers and pa tops, the composition runs a total of 8 hours and 35 minutes.

this room recording represents a possible stereo interpretation of a portion of that work.the fifth collaboration between stephen o'malley & banks violette circulated amongst the main theme of sound as physical presence. sound pressure in substantial space, relative dimension between concrete & perceptual mass, gravity induced by heightened sonic action and standing sub bass pressure. the contribution of lyrics, text & vocals by attila csihar inspired by his journeys inside imperial tokyo bring emotive & meditative identity to the otherwise purely structural composition. for this we shall be blessed.

the ghost of presence subsists across physical space, the phantom of absence across linear finite, the shadow of mass via memories. what once was.

stephen o’malleysalt” compact disc

  • salt (74:19)
february 2008 release ; very hard-to-grip disc covering stephen o’malley’s “audio component” to banks violette’s 2005 piece “bleed” ...

notable in that this isn’t (another) over-gained guitar-wash, but in fact a rather effective oscillator-bath, rife with layers of beat frequencies, subtle mechanical rasps, and the faintest echo of gallery footsteps and whatnot ... akin to o’malleycoveringla monte young & marian zazeela’s “dream house” piece, albeit recorded in-situ from a single vantage point (& with a little bit more in the way of “aktion” throughout) ...

actually kind of incredible ; finally available outside of gallery-settings ...
ideal press release...

recorded in 230 w 108 #4d, nyc spring 2005.
limited edition of 600 copies in oversized cardboard cover.

salt is the audio component created for "bleed", the initial collaboration between sculptor banks violette and musician stephen o'malley. first shown at barbara gladstone gallery, nyc summer 2005. subsequently the piece was acquired by the guggenheim museum and remains in their collection in nyc.

published by ideologic organ (bmi), administred in europe & australasia by touch musci [mcps].
thanks to anne kugler, banks violette, jose friere/team, neville wakefield, barbara gladstone & mell dettmer.

raster-noton press release...
alva noto. xerrox vol.2

xerrox vol. 2 undertakes an intense journey and affords the luxury to take its time.“ while xerrox vol. 1 (r-n 78) referred to the ‘old world’ with its tradition deeply rooted in classical music, xerrox vol. 2 tries to access a ‘new world’. it works with samples that have been gathered and developed in the usa – the so-called ‘new world’ – where the album also has almost completely been recorded.

the dramatic and dynamic approach of xerrox vol. 1 on vol. 2 has been replaced by a structural density. instead of working with individual musical entities the new album rather develops an overall, linear aesthetic that refers to musical strategies of film music. hence there are no implicitly singular pieces, but open musical structures – a journey without a predetermined target.

the first four tracks of xerrox vol. 2 actually condense to one track, using samples of michael nyman and stephen o’malley. they kind of combine to a soundtrack as for a movie before fading away in a swell of reverb feedback. xerrox sora is a rudiment from the collaboration with ryuichi sakamoto, which originates from and has been performed as encore during the 2004 insen tour. continuing from xerrox monophaser 2, the album creates a dense and interweaved complexity, which only gradually unfolds its depth. while xerrox teion dissolves in the process of copying into another sample rate (xerrowed), xerrox teion acat again tends to re-condense its quality.

xerrox vol. 2 seems to be more playful than vol. 1; following the approach of a live set it is not so much obligated to a theoretical concept. therefore it intends to break a static framework before it gets too restricted. the eleven tracks of xerrox vol. 2 serve as documents of an immediately experienced time or as attempts to unfold in an endless space. in this sense xerrox vol. 2 comes close to the idea of the aleph-1 project that tried to disappear rather than occupy an endless space.

in the end one might ask where the journey will go. will the next albums in the series – xerrox vol. 3-5 – again commit to the idea of atomisation of sound or condense in monolithic structures? this only time can tell.

boris - smile cd

some bands are fly-by-night operations, garnering instant fame, critical acclaim and shattering all album sales expectations within their first couple years of operation. you've seen 'em before — they're certainly here today, everyone's darlings tomorrow, and merely relegated to curbside refuse service just before the end of the week.

boris is certainly not one of those spontaneous success stories. though the thunderously heavy and melodic japanese experimental rock outfit has only very recently been introduced to american ears — most notably via its groundbreaking 2006 release, pink — the trio (vocalist/drummer atsuo, vocalist/guitarist wata and vocalist/bassist takeshi) has been steadily grazing its unique sonic turf for well over the past decade. and the release of its latest full-length endeavor, smile, will force the boundaries of boris' already-expansive repertoire — which features nearly a dozen albums — into new extremes.

but before looking at its illustrious present, it's important to understand where boris originated. the group came together in the early '90s as a four-piece, formed simply for the sake of having some fun. each current member had been playing in other acts, and boris was assembled as a way to have the members interact together in a band atmosphere with their former drummer. "we simply wanted to play loud, heavy, extreme and intense music at that time," the band says. "we have had the same feeling now as we did then."

the timing was ripe for an experimental rock band in japan. grunge and noise rock were increasing in popularity, and the music scene in the band's tokyo homebase became borderless, allowing for the free exchange of musical thought and ideas. with influences including the melvins and earth to use as sonic templates, the foundation was set for boris to flourish in the artistry it so immersed itself — and consequently gain the respect from like-minded audiences.

in 1996, boris released its first full-length, absolutego, which would quickly lead to a slew of album releases, including collaborations with japanese experimentalists merzbow and american-based drone metal guitar duo sunn o))). releasing albums with a surprising consistency and frequency would be immensely advantageous to boris in a variety of ways. the multitude of labels across the globe (from ubiquitous u.s.-based indies hydrahead and drag city to japan's daymare, inoxia and diwphalanx) and the abundance of limited releases produced by the band would allow boris to the gain the studio experience it had sought. it also found the band pushing the creative visual envelope with its stunning artwork and packaging, primarily directed by atsuo. furthermore, it affirmed that boris was able to morph and mutate into a variety of related styles and moods. and lastly, it also gave the group the much-deserved recognition it needed to break through into the often-fickle american underground music scene.

after befriending southern lord label chief greg anderson during their first us tour supporting the release of absolutego, boris continued to maintain their contacts with the label, sending their latest wares to anderson and routinely corresponding with him about his involvement in sunn o))). soon thereafter, a relationship had developed, and anderson, after launching his record label, obtained the blessing to release boris albums for north american consumption.

boris' southern lord catalog began with the u.s. release of absolutego in 2000, followed by the bombastic amplifier worship (issued in america for the first time in 2003), and the six-song akuma no uta (issued in america in 2005), which melded several different aspects of the act's vast repertoire into one finite release, and featured novel artwork paying homage to nick drake's bryter layter album cover (a more rare version of this album is known as the "venom version," because its artwork is in tribute to the veteran metal band).

however, one of the highlights of the sunn o))) / boris relationship came to fruition through the recording and subsequent release of the collaborative recording, altar (2006), which spawned from an experience in which boris had also performed without the use of a drummer. the release was significant in that it also featured a number of guest collaborators, including vocalist jesse sykes, soundgarden's kim thayil and former melvins bassist joe preston.

2008 marks another milestone in the boris timeline. it finds the act as a four-piece in live formation, with the addition of guitarist michio kurihara (with whom the band collaborated in 2006 for its rainbow release). and it also finds boris with the release of smile, its latest full-length effort, which melds the buzzsaw guitar and rhythmic drone-like experimentation of the band's back catalog in a fresh, distinctive, song-oriented presentation unlike any of the band's previous releases.

though the genesis of the album might hail from the recording sessions of the band's pink album, boris maintains that they opted to more closely structure the material for smile, a first for the band in composing and arranging the album's content in an attempt to find the meaning and understanding in affirming the composing process. "smile is including various ways of the 'emergence of the song,'" the band says.

one of the most representative themes of the smile album hails from "ka re ha te ta sa ki (no one grieve)," a distortion-drenched, psychedelic rhythmic barnburner. atsuo maintains that with over-extended touring, never-ending recording sessions and the flurry of activity that relates to the band's career, the members of boris often felt exhausted, losing interest in music. however, they continued to relentlessly persist in this expression of themselves. and in the end, the band asks, "how is my face looking like? i really hope that is a smile."

"we should act, and act anyhow," they add. "the starting point is always here. act and act until we feel exhausted. lastly, we think, 'we are done.' we wish our faces could be smile."

eschewing the traditional categorization of music is something which the members of boris have continually prided themselves. "we really want to share the experience, phenomenon, or feeling that we have had and really hope smile is going to be a new experience for everyone beyond music."

a distinctly characteristic transformation noted with the release of smile is takeshi's vocal styling, which is more melodic and captivating than ever before. his seamless delivery, knack for harmonies and consonance drive smile into innovative horizons within the already-extensive boris catalog.

and what keeps boris moving ahead in its various stages of its lengthy career? whether it's referencing "boris," "boris" (undercase or titlecase refers to the group's less mainstream wares) or "boris" (uppercase indicating the trio's more structured material), the band's outlook remains the same — an outlook that revolves around a constant evolution of its approach and form.

"we are always looking for exciting, stimulating and interesting music at the moment and expressing in that way, therefore our style is changing spontaneously and that change becomes its character at that point. interesting experience and incident are way more important than surface style."

a disc’s worth of stefan “z’ev” weisser’s composings/processings of stephen o’malley’s solo guitar drone/kill; a wooly wash of percussive interjections (some of it coming close to daniel menche’s recent work) and full-frequency spectral pileup. quite nice, actually...

burning witch

formation:
after the breakup of the cult doom/death band thorr's hammer in 1995, stephen o'malley, greg anderson and jamie sykes formed burning witch. the band then added g. stuart dahlquist and vocalist edgy 59, rounding out their lineup. anderson left the band and moved to los angeles to form the band goatsnake. in 1996, the band (w/out anderson) recorded songs with steve albini, which would become the towers... ep. this collection would actually not see a formal release on 12" until 1998 on slap a ham records. after the sessions for these songs, sykes left the band and was replaced by b.r.a.d.

the sessions that followed the albini recordings resulted in the rift.canyon.dreams ep, which would prove to be the final recordings by the band, as they broke up soon after the disc was completed. it was released on 12" by merciless records.

disintegration:
shortly after disbanding: " crippled lucifer" a compilation cd of the two eps, was released in 1998 by the then new label southern lord records. it was the second release of the label, the first being thorrs' hammer. burning witch briefly reformed for their last shows in the fall of 1998 after which edgy 59 left the band. o'malley reunited with anderson to form sunn o))), and dahlquist joined both in sunn 0))) for their first two albums (the grimm robe demos øø void) then briefly joined anderson in goatsnake for the "flower of disease" album. currently, o'malley is in various projects including sunn o))), and ktl. dahlquist and b.r.a.d are in asva.

the unholy birth of a genre....
the sound, attitude and execution of burning witch is very slow, painful, and heavy. while the band was unabashed about their influences they effectively used these influences to create something unique for the time. ultra-heavy, dark minimalist riffs, bombastic bass, and plodding war drums collided with vocals which alter between a nasal, melodic singing voice to a brutal, tortured demented scream/shriek. burning witch were truly the first band to incorporate the dark atmosphere of black metal with tortured doom-metal. their influence is worn on the sleeves of many bands these days including: graves at sea, goatsblood, middian (yob), isis.

this deluxe double cd re-issue of all burning witch recordings will serve as a respectful epitaph for this incredible band. it compiles both the towers and rift canyon dreams albums which were on the the original crippled lucifer release plus the following out of print material:

"communion" and "the bleeder" from split cd with goatsnake (hydra head records 2000) out of print and "rift canyon dreams" from split 12" with asva (dos fatales records 2004) out of print (remixed by randall dunn (sunn, boris, earth) and available for the first time ever on cd)

æthenorbetimes black cloudmasses” long playing record

  • side i (17:13)

  • side ii (17:04)
may 2008 release ; the second album from the trio of stephen o’malley, daniel o’sullivan, and vincent de roguin ... to my ears infinitely more pleasing than the group’s debut, mainly due to the extended sound-palette involving some nice dual drum-kit action (echoes of “church of anthrax” ?) hedged with the group’s guitar / synth / mystery-instrument droning ...

i’m hearing a distinct organum influence (esp. the eddie prevost / jackman collaborations ; always a good sign) - and in fact this music much more to do with electro-acoustic improvisation than the grand scheme of o’malley influenced/involved doom-drone excess (the sounds, for the most part, are quite light / airy - plenty of space in the lower registers) ...

excellent stuff, the best thing i’ve heard from o’malley in a good while (as much as i loved the first ktl disc they’ve kind of been on autopilot ...) & i need to re-visit those guapo records ... highly recommended !!!

vhf#111 æthenor betimes black cloudmasses lp

highly-anticipated second album from the trio of vincent de roguin (shora), stephen o'malley (sunn0))), ktl) and daniel o'sullivan (guapo). like their genre and audience-confounding debut “deep in ocean sunk the lamp of light,” “betimes” is an atmospheric, constantly changing piece that encompasses a mind-boggling array of different performance and processing techniques. the deeply psychedelic and affecting results present a soundstage that is continually evolving, with new elements entering and leaving the fray every couple of seconds. betimes includes significant contributions from free percussionists nicolas field and alex babel, who sprinkle the sound field with an almost fmp-style rush of splattering drum sound, raising the intensity of the music (without resorting to bashing). betimes also features effects and vocals from ulver mastermind kristoffer rygg, who will make his first live appearance in over a decade when æthenor plays the roadburn festival in april 2008. æthenor’s third lp, featuring vocals and lyrics by david tibet, will be released in autumn 2008.

cover design by swiss designer nicola todeschini. cd is in a letterpress card folio, printed by stumptown. lp is matte offset print.

musically, æthenor summon the most somnolent examples of bernard parmegiani, organum, nurse with wound, klaus schulze, igor wakhevitch, coil, iancu dumitrescu and charlemagne palestine. acousmatic drones ebb and flow into crackling and bubbling sonic clusters. lulling piano motifs and lamenting chants shimmer into distant lunar horizons while oscillators spin and drove serenely into unchartered audial regions. sometimes as calm as a silvery sea, so that every gentle cat's-paw and lapping wave is deafening. sometimes as tempestuous as a fuming lava beach, spitting and popping at the surface.” - daniel o'sullivan

vhf#97 æthenor deep in ocean sunk the lamp of light lp/cd

debut by trio of stephen o’malley (sunn0))))), daniel o’sullivan (guapo), and vincent de roguin (shora). taking its title from the iliad, the music here is deep and cosmic, completely unlike anything you’d expect from such heavyweights.

more in the tradition of ‘spiral insana” and “cyborg” than anything, the tracks float along in a masterful collage of activity, where careful scene changes highlight o’sullivan’s classic but artfully placed rhodes bombs, de roguin’s organ, and o’malley’s guitar.

extraordinary effort has gone into editing, mastering, and shaping these pieces – these are not tossed off improvisations or “side-project” orphans.

housed in cd and lp jackets hand-printed by alan sherry/siwa.

... nice focus on more noise-aligned pieces herein (there’a great stretch that goes furudate --> pain jerk --> hijokaidan --> incapacitants --> torturing nurse) & the segments by wiese & menche are a real treat ... but personally i’m excited more by the inclusion of pieces by joseph nechvatal (80’s tape-trader with many appearances on sound of pig cassettes), else marie pade, raaijmakers, tzni avni, and the like from prior generations / schools of thought ...

an anthology of noise & electronic music #6sixth a-chronology 1957-2010

sr290 2xcd digipack + 52 pages booklet

the sixth volume of seven published from 2001 to 2011, curated, noted and edited by guy marc hinant.

so here is the 6th and penultimate installment in our series.

as usual, it culls old historical pieces, little-known gems, and even a few previously unreleased tracks from the greatest japanoise bands, a few representatives of the younger generations (from all around the world), some rare tracks from the '80s, and it all ends with a lull that lets transpire what may be felt as a kind of undefinable mystery.

the avant-garde - the possibility of a new music (think about it). then it scattered into small communities whose best-known protagonists are totally unknown to people outside that particular circle. we are facing this fragmentation, and one form of avant-garde (you could say) ends up scattered into several (not exclusively musical) forms. it is not in avant-garde's nature to create one elementary form for each individual. other phrases used include "forays," "breakthroughs," "pushing the envelope," and then of course "going too far"...
