burned bridges and lost loves is the second part of a project in which friends, colleagues and lovers were asked to remix the works of chicago improvisation-trio tv pow. like its predecessor powerful friends and devoted lovers, a double-album that contains 29 remixes, the second and final installment also offers remixes of tracks that are mostly taken from tv pow’s album friendship patrol. adding another 31 remixes, the total amount of remixes is now equal to the amount of tracks that feature on friendship patrol. on the original score tv pow managed to create a evolving soundscape of unidentifiable field recordings, minimal electronics and serene ambient drones. it’s no surprise that friendship patrol happened to be a grateful source for further exploration.

burned bridges and lost loves includes contributions from tarentel, tim hecker, sachiko m, illusion of safety, wolf eyes, alva noto, stephan mathieu, david grubbs and francisco lopez, amongst many others. these contributors could be classified as a representative sample of currently influential artists in experimental and electronic music.

burned bridges and lost loves comes with artwork by meeuw, yet another remix of the original artwork of friendship patrol.

regarding the music ::

ah, excellent ... a bunch of us have been waiting for mr. mathieu here to drop something new for years ; “the sad mac” and “sad mac studies” have stuck with me, always on hand for extended car trips. that’s he landed here @ die schachtel, releasing his first album in many years (the last thing i can remember is that akira rabelais dvd-collaboration on con-v) is telling, as is the dedication to walter marchetti ...

musically speaking, mathieu’s trademarks are here in droves; each piece rings out with a warm & enveloping tonal palette, with most pieces hovering around a slowly evolving set of digitally-frozen chord-shapes with faint whisps of bell-like tones coming in & out of the mix ... just beautiful. highly recommended !!!

stephan mathieu is an electronic musician from saarbruecken, germany. starting out as a drummer in various improvised contexts he made the switch to working mainly with computers in the late 90’s. since then he has released a string of highly acclaimed recordings on labels like ritornell and orthlorng musork. from his interest in design and work with installations he has acquired a fine-tuned sense of form. his music is mostly based on acoustic instruments but so far they have always been more or less heavily computer processed. “on tape” is a pivotal work for mathieu as this is the first time we hear him leaving his source material unprocessed by digital means.

stephan started building this piece from recordings provided to him by swedish trio tape and saxophonist magnus granberg. adding his own subtle drumming, field recordings and a focus on reworking the sound material exclusively with classic editing techniques this is a beautiful album that weaves elements from the electronic and acoustic worlds to a seamless whole. a very clear and uncomplicated atmosphere around this piece distinguishes it from a lot of electronic music.

original recordings from a kapotte muziek concert from august 1996, im eimer, berlin, germany. reworked by stephan mathieu at pixelland, schafbrücke and pullover, falkensee between february and october 2002. published by freibank.

bio

born in 1967 in saarbrücken, germany, stephan mathieu spent the '90s in berlin as an improviser playing drums. in 1998 he returned to his hometown to "become a family man," and began working with a computer. since 2000 he has taught digital arts and concepts at the university for arts and design hbk saar in saarbrücken and at the bauhaus academy in weimar. a composer, performer, and installation artist, mathieu has created sound installation works for the cultural heritage völklinger hütte, germany, and elsewhere, and has released more than 10 albums for labels such as orthlorng musork, ritornell, lucky kitchen and fällt, both solo and in collaborations with ekkehard ehlers among others.

“i like the basic idea of the computer being a machine that works for you. my main applications are like organisms -- living creatures. once you've made friends with them you can rely on them and become a team.

thats what my work since 2001 is based on: a certain trust in my software, and not too much control to the composer. with my rework for the dutch band kapotte muziek, this concept topped itself out. i spent eight months processing raw material, resulting in the usual several gigabytes. when it was about time for me to finish the piece i returned to my files to edit them down in protools (mac os9).

i re-listened to everything, made some adjustments, and then rebooted in osx to work in soundhack. after a little while my machine crashed, hard -- so hard that all i could do to restart it was to take out the batteries. when i finally rebooted in osx it did nothing else but play this music for 30 minutes, a medley of my kapotte muziek material, finished by the computer itself.

kapotte muziek, ironically enough, translates as "damaged music." the live concert i remixed took place 1996 in a berlin club called "im eimer" - that's "in the bucket," a funny way of saying "out of order/damaged".
