june 2011 release ; ... second 10 from dekorder covering stephan mathieu’s music :: in this case a pair of electro-acoustic transformations of haendel’s "twelve concerti grossi" & “messiah” sourced to early-mid-20th-century 78 rpm recordings ...

stephan mathieu
to describe george washington bridge
10"

limited edition of 500 copies!

"to describe george washington bridge" is stephan mathieu's 2nd dekorder release in the 10" format (reflecting his interest in old 78rpm records) after 2009's sold out "the key to the kingdom", and, we're happy to say, again it features two of the composer's most outstanding short pieces. both are recorded utilizing similar methods as used on his most recent album "a static place" on 12k records yet they are presented in an even more condensed and melodic way. as source material he used transcriptions made from the marvelous 25x 12inch 78rpm set g.f. händel. "twelve concerti grossi" performed by the busch chamber players in 1946, and a columbia 10" record from 1912 with händel's usual smash hits from "messiah".

between 1928 and 1932 the earliest recordings of historically informed performances of music from the late gothic, renaissance and baroque era were etched into 78rpm records. i used some of these records from my collection, playing them back with two mechanical acoustic hmv model 102 gramophones. the initial soundwaves produced back then by period instruments like the clavichord, viols, lute, hurdy-gurdy are read from the grooves by a cactus needle to be amplified by the gramophones diaphragm housed in a soundbox. those vibrations travel through the tonearm which is connected straight to the gramophones horn, which releases the music to my space. here the sound is again picked up by a pair of customized microphones and send to my computer, to be transformed by spectral analysis and convolution processes. an imaginary room, inhabited by all the spatial information collected on the journey is created and will be projected in a final instance into the listeners space.

stephan mathieu is a self taught composer and performer of his own music, working in the fields of electroacoustics and abstract digitala. his sound is largely based on early instruments, environmental sound and obsolete media, which are recorded and transformed by means of experimental microphony, re-editing techniques and software processes involving spectral analysis and convolution; it has been compared to the landscape paintings of caspar david friedrich, the work of colorfield artists mark rothko, barnett newman and ellsworth kelly.

during the last decade stephan's music has been released on 30 cds and vinyl records, both solo and in collaboration with akira rabelais, douglas benford, ekkehard ehlers, janek schaefer, john hudak and taylor deupree.

i'm a collector of 78rpm records from the 1910s and 20s, the era of acoustic and early electronic audio recording. i love the way they transport sound.

stephan mathieuthe key to the kingdom” ten inch single record

  • the key to the kingdom (part 1) (3:27)

  • the key to the kingdom (part 2) (3:09)
february 2009 release ; completely gorgeous set of string drones, entirely acoustic in nature, performed by stephan mathieu on a “historic phonoharp no.2 zither” using ebows for infinite sustain ::

this isn’t so much an aside to stephan’s more well-known electronic music as an extension of it ; the same attention to detail & harmonic micro-activity is evident despite the seemingly simple setup ...

dekorder have to great lengths to have this normal 10 / 45rpm record emulate a pre wwii 78rpm lacquer, right on down the pre-filled out conditions-log stamp on the front of the sleeve ... highly recommended !!!

stephan mathieu
the key to the kingdom
10"

limited numbered edition of 400 copies!

"the key to the kingdom" is stephan mathieu's tribute to the great gospel preacher washington phillips and the world of raw, early gospel on 78rpm platters. the 2-part suite, presented in the classic 10" vinyl format that comes in a authentic, individually stamped and numbered 78rpm archive sleeve, has been performed on a historic phonoharp no.2 zither from the 1890s utilizing five e-bows and entropic and convolution processes. "the key to the kingdom" is a spin-off of mathieu's "virginals" project, a solo recital of contemporary classics performed on historic instruments.

stephan mathieu is a musician and sound artist based in saarbrücken, germany. during the last decade his music has been released on 16 critical acclaimed cds, both solo and in collaboration with douglas benford, ekkehard ehlers, john hudak, janek schaefer and akira rabelais on some of the finest electronic music labels worldwide (die schachtel, häpna, ritornell, lucky kitchen, headz). his sound is largely based on early instruments, environmental sound and obsolete media which are recorded and transformed by means of experimental microphony, re-editing techniques and software processes involving spectral analysis and convolution and has been compared to the landscape paintings of caspar david friedrich and the work of colorfield artists mark rothko, barnett newman and ellsworth kelly. stephan is a collector of 78rpm records from the 1910s and 20s, the era of acoustic and early electronic audio recording. his most recent album "radioland" made it into "best of 2008" lists in the wire, dusted, boomkat, milkfactory and many others.

july 2008 release ; new version of this popular disc - no longer in an “oversized” green-plastic neon nightmare, now housed in a just-as-lovely digipack-sized custom package that, frankly, rivals the “limited” edition (i.e. if you didn’t manage to get one you’re not missing much !!!)

regarding the music ::

ah, excellent ... a bunch of us have been waiting for mr. mathieu here to drop something new for years ; “the sad mac” and “sad mac studies” have stuck with me, always on hand for extended car trips. that’s he landed here @ die schachtel, releasing his first album in many years (the last thing i can remember is that akira rabelais dvd-collaboration on con-v) is telling, as is the dedication to walter marchetti ...

musically speaking, mathieu’s trademarks are here in droves; each piece rings out with a warm & enveloping tonal palette, with most pieces hovering around a slowly evolving set of digitally-frozen chord-shapes with faint whisps of bell-like tones coming in & out of the mix ... just beautiful. highly recommended !!!
die schachtel press release...

radioland is stephan mathieu's long awaited 5th full length studio work, following his acclaimed the sad mac cd from 2004. exclusively based on real-time processed shortwave radio signals, radioland takes the listener on a carpet ride across endless, majestic shimmering landscapes. radioland is a mesmerizing reflection on the bubble of information thats all around us, all the time, by one of the truly unique minds in today's abstract digitalia.

korm plastics (netherlands) #kp 3012 cd

stephan mathieukapotte muziek by ...” compact disc

  • a microsound fairytale (20:58)
korm plastics press release...
stephan mathieu - kapotte muziek by
korm plastics kp 3012 cdep

original recordings from a kapotte muziek concert from august 1996, im eimer, berlin, germany. reworked by stephan mathieu at pixelland, schafbrücke and pullover, falkensee between february and october 2002. published by freibank.

bio

born in 1967 in saarbrücken, germany, stephan mathieu spent the '90s in berlin as an improviser playing drums. in 1998 he returned to his hometown to "become a family man," and began working with a computer. since 2000 he has taught digital arts and concepts at the university for arts and design hbk saar in saarbrücken and at the bauhaus academy in weimar. a composer, performer, and installation artist, mathieu has created sound installation works for the cultural heritage völklinger hütte, germany, and elsewhere, and has released more than 10 albums for labels such as orthlorng musork, ritornell, lucky kitchen and fällt, both solo and in collaborations with ekkehard ehlers among others.

track note

i like the basic idea of the computer being a machine that works for you. my main applications are like organisms -- living creatures. once you've made friends with them you can rely on them and become a team.

thats what my work since 2001 is based on: a certain trust in my software, and not too much control to the composer. with my rework for the dutch band kapotte muziek, this concept topped itself out. i spent eight months processing raw material, resulting in the usual several gigabytes. when it was about time for me to finish the piece i returned to my files to edit them down in protools (mac os9).

i re-listened to everything, made some adjustments, and then rebooted in osx to work in soundhack. after a little while my machine crashed, hard -- so hard that all i could do to restart it was to take out the batteries. when i finally rebooted in osx it did nothing else but play this music for 30 minutes, a medley of my kapotte muziek material, finished by the computer itself.

kapotte muziek, ironically enough, translates as "damaged music." the live concert i remixed took place 1996 in a berlin club called "im eimer" - that's "in the bucket," a funny way of saying "out of order/damaged".

october 2011 release ; ... interesting, heady work from stephan mathieu, involving the “sonification” of raw image data (header re-writing, esssentially) yielding a gnarly, often rhythmic whir of digital interference ...

something 180º shift away from his recent working methods (shortwave radios, getting into purely acoustic works for gramophones & bowed psaltery & piano) ; a quite aggressive & transfixing set ...

2005 release ; a compilation of “warm, tender and calm” pieces by the likes of oren ambarchi, stephan mathieu, tape, brendon anderegg (1/2 of mountains), taylor deupree, and a wave of contemporary japanese laptop/sound-artists, mostly friendly with spekk label-owner mondii, of whom i was largely unaware until now (some of the better pieces on the disc come from the lesser-knowns actually) ...

back in the salad days of the early digital music days these sorts of themed comps were in much wider supply ; glad to hear something like from a contemporary perspective ...
spekk press release...

title: small melodies

format: cd

text by nao sugimoto

this is the first compilation album from spekk compiled by the label owner mondii. each of the artists were asked to compose a track with their interpretations of "small melodies" with keywords like warm, tender and calm. it was meant to present diversity of minimal-style music in a peaceful "harmonic" way. and it was a coincidence that both taylor deupree & stephan mathieu created a track dedicated to their child.

the first half of the album is the more "digital" side and the last half more "analog" side encompassing laptop digital processing to field recording materials (for instance, naph's track is only made out of frequencies within the wind/air) to band oriented materials.

participants delivers these great pieces of music from various continents including usa, sweden, france, germany, australia and japan showing slight relationships between each other which kind of gives us a warm feeling of unity within this ongoing global minimalist scene. it was also my intention to present that nowadays, there are not much differences between the outputs from more digital background artists and more band oriented musicians due to their methods of composing (technology) and interests and such. evidently, more and more rock labels will release digital processed music and bands will use digital softwares, electronic artists will become more aware of small sounds and warmth of the nature. i take this positive!
