12k press release...
12k presents status, the result of two of the genre’s most talented, and diffferent, composers; frank bretschneider and ralph steinbrüchel, sharing their sounds and styles. status began in the spring of 2003 when they designed their own sound sequences and samples and sent the material to each other, waiting and hearing what the other will create out of it. they played this game for nearly 2 years, sending sequences and tracks back and forth until both of them were satisfied with the result.

when the minimal 120bpm rhythmic structures of frank bretschneider and the austere sonic minimalism of steinbrüchel get together, a rare piece of atmospheric rythmics is created. sometimes very melodic, sometimes abstract, sometimes very rhythmic, sometimes nearly pop, and always minimal. detailed, fragile and full at once status shows where rhythmic and abstract music can get together, how different sonic worlds combine to create a unique listening experience.

bretschneider is a founder of germany’s art/music collective raster-noton and has released some of the most engaging albums of the decade. following last year’s gold (raster/noton) and the stunning aerial riverseries (whatness, 2002), looping i-vi (and other assorted love songs) is bretschneider’s 2nd 12k cd, following rausch (2000) and appearances on 12k’s critically acclaimed compilations. his music can also be found on such well-known labels as mille plateaux, audio.nl, fällt, and bip-hop.

steinbrüchel, born in 1969, studied communication design at central saint martins school in london, where he acquired a masters of arts and design with distinction. he now lives and works as a musician and graphic designer in zurich, switzerland. in 2002 his composition zwischen.raum (domizil15, zurich, 2002) was distinguished with the max brand award for electronic music (phonotaktik.02 festival, new york). in the same year he received a compositional scholarship from “pro helvetia”, arts council of switzerland, to work on his release circa (line_012, new york, 2003). in march 2004 the mini cd-rom –00:dedaih, which contains an audio/visual installation by steinbrüchel/brusa, was published on the label synchron (sync03). in the fall of 2004 his second solo cd skizzen (binemusic, bine 006cd) and the collaboration atak004 with kim cascone (usa) and jason kahn (ch) were also released.

nonvisualobjects (austria) #nvo 010 cd

nonvisualobjects press release...
artist: schurer > steinbrüchel
title: < falte >
cat#: nvo_o10
format: cd
release date: october 07

limited edition: 300

is methodically based upon a technique invented by the surrealists entitled «exquisite corpse». a method by which a collection of words, images or sounds are assembled collectively in sequence, either by following a rule or by delivering and making visible the «ending» of what has been created previously. this procedure has a resemblance to an old parlor game entitled «consequences», in which the players write alternately on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of what they wrote and pass it on for further contribution.

based on this process a series of compositions by schurer > steinbrüchel was presented in september 2006 as an eight channel surround soundinstallation at the kunsthaus zurich, accompanied by a four channel visual contribution by yves netzhammer. the version on this cd documents a condensed, slightly more composed and therefore differentiated form of folding.

«man kann (...) die teilung des kontinuums nicht mit der des sandes in körner vergleichen, sondern mit in falten gelegtem papier oder stoff, so daß es unendlich viele falten geben könnte, die einen kleiner als die anderen, ohne daß sich der körper jemals in punkte oder minima auflöste.»

(gottfried wilhelm leibniz, 1646–1716)

gorgeous collection of contemporary concrète/acoustmatic music in its tonal incarnation; starting with the immaculate original piece by the swiss sound-artist ralph steinbrüchel, then following suit(e) with versions by the necks’ chris abrahams, ben frost, 12k’s taylor deupree, oren ambarchi, and finally toshiya tsunoda (whom, it appears, recorded the piece as played back in a room using a microphone inside of a glass bottle!)
room40 press release...
in spring 2003 steinbrüchel received an invitation from the swiss music festival 'taktlos' in berne to contribute a track for their listening room equipped with a surround 5.1 sound system. during the two-day festival in november 2003 steinbrüchel's track 'opaque' was played back in cycle mode (among tracks from various other artists).

the listening room focused on the experience of being able to listen to music in a very quiet and large environment - unlikely to most home listening situations. additionally the possibility of working in surround gave the musicians a chance to create very special audio sculptures in the space.

this disc collects 'opaque' and reinterpretations by oren ambarchi (aus), taylor deupree (us), frost (aus), toshiya tsunoda (jp) and chris abrahams (nz).

each of the contributing artists was chosen for his unique working method (oren for his work with guitar, taylor for processed sounds, frost guitar feedback, toshiya for fieldrecordings and chris for piano). to make the remixes more varied and special, each artist received only three samples/soundfiles from the original track, but none of the artists have received the same samples or even have heard the original track by steinbrüchel before the release of the cd.

debut release on this new label run by up-and-coming composer / sound-designer asher thal-nir (known to most simply by his forename, asher) ; based right here in good ‘ol somerville ...

essentially this is a “reworkings” collection of materials by asher himself, sourced back to a cassette his early minimal loop-based compositions ... and i must say, given the material, he’s chosen a fine range of subjects to transform his music, ranging from steinbrüchel’s grainy, lo-bit digital smear to heribert friedl’s almost raga-ish drone (listen to the sound-sample) to perhaps ubeboet’s most faithful reading, leaving the tape-hiss of the original materials intact ...

a very nice disc & an auspicious start for this new domestic imprint ...

sd-001: graceful degradation: variations
2.2008
cd limited to 500 copies
featuring: heribert friedl, john hudak, jason kahn, kenneth kirschner, steve roden, steinbrüchel and ubeboet.

the source recording for the compositions featured on this album still exist on a single 90 minute cassette, made by the intermagnetics corporation from santa monica, california. there are still some bits of led zeppelin here and there which remain among my recordings, but mostly the tape is full of recording i made. i remember working with this tape for several months over the summer and into fall of 2005, in my apartment in brooklyn; i would spend hours going through the material and trying to find different combinations of the recordings of the sounds which are stored on it. after a certain period of time working with the material i put together some pieces for an album release and thought i was done. but in the end i went back and continued working, it is the material from this second period of work which has been used by the artists featured on this release.

the concept of graceful degradation in relation to memory as well as system failure, seemed quite fitting to the work i was doing, as well as to the work of other sound recording artists. there is a relationship that develops between our own memories and recordings made and archived using various data storage and retrieval technologies which i am very interested in; i initiated this project with this interest in mind.

as a continuation of the graceful degradation of my original recordings i asked seven artists to use the material in their own ways to create a new piece. each artist put the material into their systems of working with sound and came up with the results featured on this album. i am very honored to have their contributions and pleased to present them on this first release on sourdine.
