bottrop-boy (germany) #b-boy 030 cd

starving weirdossummon with electronic sorcery” compact disc

  • summon (13:06)
  • orchestra at twilight (13:36)
  • in transit (13:51)
  • sunset at the college cove bluffs (11:29)
december 2007 release; an excellent set of pulsing, blown-out freely-improvised drones from the humbolt county starving weirdos collective, riding something of a visibility wave due to their recent discovery by just about everyone outside of their native california environs...

ps. it’s especially nice that the more interesting pits & lans of the american subterranean noise/improv sector have finally breached the high ivory towers of the european sound-art label-scene (see also the mouthus disc below) ...

starving weirdos
summon with electronic sorcery
cd / b-boy 030

this is the soundtrack of your favourite nightmare. the aural cinema delivered by the starving weirdos is best experienced with one’s eyes closed. a dark psychedelic joyride on the inside of one’s eyelids. instead of the obvious, hypnotically safe vision or bouncing orangey sunspots, entire films are projected onto the eyeball. think desolate valleys, sweaty engine rooms and dark alleyways. the four trips committed to record by this californian band taunt every accepted boundary. the black magic summoned by the weirdos’ guitars, saxophones, electronics and smothered voices culminate in a lynchian cinematic exorcism in four parts.

listening to the ominous opening piece summon one finds oneself lost in a sudden sandstorm. enveloped by whirling sand and surrounded by howling coyotes, the only escape is a dilapidated ghost town. with its wailing guitars and scraping percussion this music is best described as desert folk. listen to in transit which sounds like the unnerving siren song of the grimy urban jungle. the listener becomes inescapably entangled in the low mist of ghostly phantom guitars and vocal reverb.

the core of this collective consists of brian pyle and merrick mckinlay from humboldt county, ca. having produced a large number of limited cd-r releases since 1998, summon with electronic sorcery neatly manages to summarise their work to date. this album has grown into a powerful statement. the menacing and angst-ridden industrial undercurrent permeates the weirdos’ hardcore improvisations, while excursions into free folk humanise and cushion their impact. put on your head phones and hold on tight to your chair. this album marks the sonic raid of plunder by this hungry pack of mad wolves.

summon with electronic sorcery is packed in the beautiful 'envelope' packaging, designed and handprinted by jason dodge & christine roland, a one-off pressing of 250 copies.

olde english spelling bee (usa) #oesb-10 lp

starving weirdosblue herons” long playing record

  • manila (18:25)

  •  king radness on his royal swim (18:15)
january 2009 release ; full run of this prior edition-of-42 lp, pressed back in september for the band’s european tour ...

two tracks ; “manilla” warms to a creaking / rumbling stasis, akin to taking the ferry across to the bygdøy penninsula to visit the viking ship museum ... “king radness on his royal swim(love their humboldtyeah, brah” titles, btw) takes raymond dijkstra’s stuck chord organ for a tumble down the stairs in a glass-trinket factory, before time slows to the point where you can make out each individualplink” ...

so, yes, musically-speaking, a++, as always from these guys. but what really made me sit up & take notice when the box landed was the hand-carved nature of the hacked gatefold sleeves (designed by nate nelson) ; essentially two separate chip-board lp jackets glued together to form one cohesive whole, with all sorts of errant squiggle & lace donning every surface ... brilliant.

rv paintingstrinity rivers” compact disc

  • river one (11:37)
  • mad river (13:35)

pristine disc of flowing drone-work from this starving weirdos related agglomerate; on par with organum’s “sphyx” in its squeaking-metal / wind-tunnel ambience ...

'trinity rivers'

rs-22
cd
edition of 500

new nature jams from the northern california peace crew. brian pyle (one half of the core starving weirdos duo) his brother jon, and their bro spencer traverse the twilight moon as rv paintings. 'trinity rivers' is a suite of three nocturnal jams, way heavy on the hypnotic vibe. wine glasses, holographic guitar circles and skittery drum lines unite to form a fantasy world- but not in color - all black and white with smears of metallic sliver. eno circa 'on land' with ellen fullman's long string instrument after a midnight swim on the ocean. this is by far one of the most beautiful and totally dark audio documents out of the weirdos camp.

rv paintingssamoa highway” long playing record

  • millions
  • round-a-bout bench on a cold, foggy day

  • mirrors
  • from manila to forever
  • as far as we could see
october 2010 release ; fine set of coastal thrum from starving weirdos / ensemble economique’s brian pyle & brother jon ... a bit smokier & perhaps more rustic than sw’s perennial energy-haze (even if stray moments do lift off into similar levels of clatter ; c.i.p. the sound-sample) ; the mix-buried twin drum-kit thrash throughout is a very nice touch, as are the musique concrète flourishes ...

samoa highway lp
the helen scarsdale agency : hms019

release date: october 26, 2010

rv paintings were born in california. humboldt county, to be exact. it is nearly impossible to imagine their origins being elsewhere since the brothers brian and jon pyle, who currently pilot rv paintings, constantly mine the metaphysical properties of their homeland through a heavy-lidded psychedelia. the redwood trees that majestically rise from the rugged terrain may have been one of the endemic objects that inspired rv paintings to "jam nature;" but humboldt county's other major cash crop -- marijuana -- cannot be far behind. as much as the pyle brothers channel a psychotropic animism through sound, their diaphanous drones and foggy ambient tangles spring from a schematic intelligence that belies any method acting of getting stoned and jamming in a room.

samoa highway is the second full album for rv paintings, following the nature jam transmissions of trinity rivers published by root strata in 2007 and a well-suited split lp with taiga remains from blackest rainbow. just as the debut payed homage to the rugged river system that cuts through forests and mountains of the region, samoa highway refers to the lengthy bridge that runs between two coastal communities in humboldt county, one of which houses a municipal airport. a swarm of drone guitars announces the opening of the record on "millions," with a shoegaze wash collapsing into rarified tone purity and bulging through a metallic buzz. field recordings of airplane take-off and firework explosions punctuate the undulating bleary smear of the pyle brothers' guitars. the result is one of levitation, even as rv paintings seem to be plugging their guitars and electronics directly into the moss, soil, and mycelia of the humboldt forest. echo-soaked flutes, maudlin stringsscabrous noises unearthed from the bottom of the pacific, and a cinematic arcs of guitar shimmer complete the beautiful and haunted miasma of samoa highway that falls somewhere between taj mahal travellers, organum, and the caretaker.

brian pyle may be best known as one of the founders of the starving weirdos and records his solo work as ensemble economique. samoa highway stands the first piece of vinyl published by helen scarsdale agency, pressed in an edition of 500 copies.

starving weirdospath of lighting” double long playing record set

  • n.y. blues (13:17)

  • häagen dazs (13:18)

  • into the flatlands (16:38)

  • god of echoes (14:37)
october 2009 release ; second of two concurrently-released starving weirdos double-lp sets, this one issuing an otherwise unavailable quartet of pieces by the trio of brian pyle, merrick mckinlay, and steve lazar ...

it’s impossible to crystallize what these guys are up to, exactly ... while much of the sound-world reminds me of 70s / 80s amm (esp. the errant radio transmisisons & bowed/brushed cymbal filigree) i honestly wouldn’t be surprised if these guys were raised in a bubble, coming up with their particular array of free-squall tactics organically, void of any recorded or even word-of-mouth influence ...

each of the four pieces here as a mind / trajectory of it’s own & each warrant repeat listening(s) ...
can’t argue with that cover, either ...

starving weirdos path of lighting 2xlp

first off, this 2xlp set has thee best cover i’ve laid my sockets on in many moons. it is soooo eye-burningly great that i’m tempted to run out and buy a van just to have the image painted on it. it’s about time the art world came around to the lucrative “ray-gun touting topless women riding giant tarantulas through darkened valleys” market. bra-fuckin’-vo! but i’m not getting off my high horse just yet. i must say that this latest from norcal’s finest, starving weirdos is one of their most swell/swollen yet to date. four flippin’ sides of confuse-adelia for both the farm-fresh kid to the well-heeled cad.

way noisier than the releases on root strata, path of lighting is chock full of mystery moves and dynamo hums, from the tripped-out textural flips on “into the flatlands” flickering in and out of foci to the almost-an-environmental-statement of “n.y. blues” with talk show jibber jabbing into the corrosive static as the grooves run out. the two dudes in starving weirdos are joined by yet another dude for two tracks and it’s tough to know exactly what he’s adding (besides another layer of ecstasy gush) but they’re my fave sides. for sure. these two sides sound like the fine line that separates no neck blues band from sunburned hand of the man. the final track could/should have been in the movie rosemary’s baby, right around the time mia farrow is screaming “what have you done to his eyes!

as the kids these days say, “fuck you, dad!” — no wait, “dude, that would rule!” yeah, that’s it. so, let recap — you get the deluxe gatefold jacket courtesy of the always peachy weird forest label, twin slabs of head-spinning secret laboratory recordings and man — that cover is making me so hot!

starving weirdosself-hypnosis” double long playing record set

  • density of life part one (14:22)

  • self-hypnosis (12:23)

  • density of life part two (14:53)

  • the ever-present moment (11:52)
october 2009 release ; first of two concurrently-released starving weirdos double-lp sets, this one reissuing a 2006 collective jyrk cd(r) featuring the trio of brian pyle, merrick mckinlay, and james gibbons (mostly) going to town inside a highly reflective stone-walled racquetball court (the acoustics aren’t far removed from your classic urban parking garage ; endless decay of any/all sounded events) ...

really loving these guys & everything they do ; seeing their “practice what you preach” reality @ the root strata fest back in september definitely put it all into place ... given the levels of mystical klang that sustain pretty much from the second you drop the needle to the end of the last piece, i’m going to recommend this one as the “pick” of the two ; but then again if you’re anything like me, you’ll come back for “path of lighting” as well ...

starving weirdos self-hypnosis 2xlp

what’s going on here? well, a couple sides of self-hypnosis were recorded in a concrete racquetball court (and a couple of sides weren’t) which has been mysteriously transformed into the legendary black ark studios and lee perry is going nuts with the ol’ echo effects. a tiny clatter in the background suddenly rushes up to your ear-bones, magnified into giant sheets of rubberized steel plates which bounces as high as you are. the backwards flow-motion is set on fire as the storm approaches. various liquids are aerated while dub insects skitter about the killing floor. little crashes, hither and thither, mostly between the buildings — not causing much damage at all. oh oh, those voices sound pretty serious. time to go? nope. these here farming combines sure are hard to start up but, boy, when they do you’re in for a thrashing. ham radio on rye. moldy rye. mutter all you want and loop it, why don’tcha?

the other two side are not rock and roll or hoochie-coo. the mystery is killin’ me! is that a giant wet thumb rubbing on a window? aren’t you the big man, buster! i like how the guitar gets sucked into a vortex and then keeps popping out and scaring me. it’s all bone saws and throwing stars. ducks and covers. and where is that humming noise coming from? oh, now i get it. awesome! lemme play this again!
