sonny’s just on fire throughout - just so many pan-trajectorial shards of guitar-sound bouncing around inside my head everytime i spin this. top notch group including free-drummer extraordinaire milford graves, byg staple dave burrell, norris jones, and ted daniels ...

ps. i’ll share something with you; when i was in college i had to take these fairly idiotic guitar-technique classes (i had already decided by then that i wasn’t interested in the “instrument” side of music school) - the “final exam” for one of which being that i had to notate the guitar part of my choice and - you guessed it - i did sonny’s demon-wail in the exact passage you hear in the sound-sample. my teacher was vexed, to say the least (all of those slashes where nice, round note-heads would be in, say, a tal farlow solo) - but in the end i got an a ...

black woman (180 gram vinyl)
sonny sharrock
4 men with beards
picked by wire magazine as one of the 100 records which set the world on fire, 1970s-era miles davis guitarist sonny shamrock's lp was released in 1969 & produced by herbie mann, who loved sharrock's uncompromising blasts of atonal guitar with mann's own band. recorded with n.y. free jazz musicians dave burrell, norris jones, ted daniel & milford graves, the lp features sonny's with linda on yoko ono-style vocals. there's plenty of soul & gospel influences & a slight pop element counterpoint to sonny's aggressive guitar & linda's wails. originally released on atlantic records.

collectables (usa) #col 6612 cd

sonny sharrock / wayne hendersonblack woman / people get ready” compact disc

  • black woman
  • peanut
  • bialero
  • blind willy
  • portrait of linda in three colors - all black
  • (plus the wayne henderson record)
herein lies the fault of the collectables label’s manifesto... why exactly you’d pair sonny & linda’s mind-melt burner with what’s essentially a slightly above-average sounding late 60s soul-jazz-funk tread (henderson’s “people get ready”) is quite beyond the scope anyone familiar with the former. regardless, glad black woman is available in a tangible, semi easy to find form.

in the pantheon of out-guitar, sharrock can certainly be deemed the grand/god-father. this was his first album as a leader (originally on the vortex label) after guesting on miles’ jack johnson and pharoah’s tauhid (i actually transcribed the guitar parts of this entire record during my berklee years, in an attempt to ‘find myself’. no shit). his playing warms icy depths with high-intent fingers. linda’s yalp intones great astral mirth. milford graves and dave burrell guest, their playing is spot on, masterful.

a bold statement & a giddy head rush of damn fine sonorities. burning...
