may 2011 release ; ... love the whole pretext here ; personally, if ni were to market a product that produced music that sounded anywhere near this interesting (on a rhythmic, yes, but mostly timbral scale) i’d consider upgrading my komplete set for the first time since it began gathering dust in the mms “software ghetto” :: ... anyways, mark’s recent flurry of activity continues here, with a series of pieces recorded just two months back (good job on the concept-to-market follow-through peter !!!) merging the a-rhythmic chatter of “ul8” ‘s best moments with a kind of “product demo” sensibility that’s fairly prescient given the contempoary reality of “that new shiny bit of kit that will jump-start my career” (any of you that are friends with richie devine on facebook know that there’s just an insane amount of this sort of thing being launched every week ; very little of it seems not to pander to a 1998 “clicks ‘n’ cuts” aesthetic that you’d think we’d have all moved on from by now) ... comes in a b/w double-wide sleeve w/ a 6-panel fold-out poster (see below ; via mms “hand model” gm) ...

emego 116 / mark fell manitutshu 2 x 12" vinyl release date 27.05.2011 total running time: 42 minutes 45rpm in january 2011 mark was invited by erik wiegand (aka errorsmith) to make some presets for his new software synthesizer which he was building for native instruments. after developing about 40 sounds*, mark decided to rework his ul8 project by extending the pattern generating systems used in its construction, which he then connected to the sounds produced in erik's synthesizer. the result is this double 12" single, featuring 9 tracks and a remix from mark's friend and colleague mat steel. the project ships with an a1 full colour poster. recorded rotherham (uk) and sheffield (uk) march 2011. mastered by lupo at dubplates and mastering (de) march 2011. * unfortunately ni rejected all of mark's presets and none were used for the final distribution.

snd / nhk ‘split’ (pan 26) split 12" lp between two of the artists at the forefront of the experimental dance scene, snd and nhk. aside from sharing 3 letter names and having an upcoming japanese tour together, the two acts also nicely compliment each other via skewed electronics which come out of mutual dance and minimal electronic sensibilities. snd offer a cut of jacking minimal loops, flows of repetition crafted at once as structured yet simultaneously unfolding before your eyes (and ears), whilst on the flipside nhk is suitably equal part bass squelch with rudimentary snare motorik via pirate radio broadcast. snd formed in sheffield, uk, in 1998 by mark fell and mat steel. three critically acclaimed albums for mille plateaux alongside the continuing series on their own label put snd at the forefront of new digital minimalism, pioneering a sound that always influenced but also resisted the so called 'clicks and cuts' movement that built up around them. after their third album - tender love - for mille plateaux in 2002, snd became disillusioned with the recording treadmill and proliferation of the genre they seemed to inhabit, and turned to other projects; solo work, curating events and installations, the occasional contribution to compilations, an album for raster noton from side project 'blir', remix work for the likes of ryuichi sakamoto, and sound design for fellow sheffielders the designers republic. during this time they also honed their impressive live performance through extensive touring of japan, america, and europe (most notably with autechre), and one off shows at major festivals and venues around the world. experiencing an snd performance can be alienating, engaging, dynamic, and unforgiving; each event a unique exploration of the relationship between performer, audience, software and context. snd continued an active year with another european tour supporting autechre, a reworking of "billie jean" for the 'recovery' box set on fractured records, a major feature in the wire magazine, a tour of japan and the recording of another album. nhk formed in 2006 in osaka, japan by kouhei matsunaga and toshio munehiro. mainly as a side project of prolific producer kouhei matsunaga (who is working under many different aliases such as nhk'koyxen, nhkyx, internet magic, koyxen), they started making experimental dub techno with a more raw and harsh edge to it. kouhei has released numerous albums on labels such as skam records, wordsound, raster noton and his first ever album upside down on mille plateaux in 1998. he has also collaborated with artists like merzbow, jungle brothers' sensational, autechre's sean booth, mika vainio, conrad schnitzler, anti pop consorium's high priest, rudolf eb.er, puppetmastaz crew, asmus tietchens, ralf 'rlw' wehowsky and so on. his own label flying swimming was founded in 2002 with the main purpose being to publish and curate events of experimental contemporary music and art.

this year, 2012, la casa encendida de obra social caja madrid celebrates its tenth anniversary. since it was founded in 2003 and launched its multifaceted, complex and ambitious yet accessible project, music has become one of the centre's mainstays as well as one of its most popular activities. in this respect, the last ten years bear witness to la casa encendida's firm commitment to the development and dissemination of the most diverse trends in contemporary music. this commitment has taken the form of a regular music programme, support for festivals such as experimentaclub and the festival internacional de musica improvisada hurta cordel, and the creation of its own spaces and festivals, as in the case of electrónica en abril. this festival was established to offer a platform for the different types of electronic music forms - minority, fringe or original - which could not find or did not have a specific place in madrid in which to perform and come together. the trajectory, public acceptance and philosophy of electrónica en abril reflect many of the centre's values, and since the festival is also ten years old this year la casa encendida has decided to celebrate the joint anniversary by releasing this vinyl record, which aims to echo a common place and mission founded a decade ago and mutually fuelled year after year by the latest, most novel proposals. in view of all the above, our first thanks must go to the audiences of la casa encendida whose trust, support and indisputable response over the course of these last ten years have enabled the festival electrónica, en abril to develop and consolidate its own unique niche. we are equally grateful to the musicians and producers for their excellent work and commitment to this project since 2003. finally, we must extend our special thanks to jose luis villalobos, who has curated the festival since the very first edition and without whose dedication, interest and spirit of cooperation none of this would have been possible. the electrónica en abril festival was born in 2003, not long after la casa encendida opened, in response to what had become a clamorous demand: madrid needed to carve out a niche for itself on the international electronic music scene. the festival was conceived with a clearly-defined, manageable format: three days and three international artists per day. there was a distinct sense of the need to look outwards and absorb everything that was happening in other parts of the world, to push the boundaries of what was then the norm in the city. with this idea of excellence in mind, the festival was articulated around four specific concepts: avant-garde, cutting edge, live performance and wide-angle vision. we wanted to showcase some of the trends that had shaped electronic music in its myriad facets over the last decade, to create a space that was committed to these sounds. we set out to reflect on where electronic music was headed at the dawn of the 21st century, and in keeping with this ambition we juxtaposed a wide range of sound spectrums, such as techno, improvisation, hip-hop, jazz, electro, ambient, dubstep, wonky, etc. and how should we view electronic music: as an aesthetic category or a way of working with sound? it has been quite a challenge, but over the years the festival has gradually acquired its own shape and substance. in fact, electrónica en abril has grown not only as an event but also as a space that expands the city limits and constructs it, insofar as it brings audience and artists together in a shared project. it has become a kind of travelogue, guiding us as we transcend critical listening and open our minds to live, cutting-edge electronic music, whatever its roots. “music is the weapon of the future,” proclaimed fela kuti. in our case, we might say that in the past, or at least over these last three decades, musical standards in madrid have been a far cry from what one might expect of the third most populous city in the european union;
