| oo-kah!... here’s the third in the fabulously intense ache-label div/orce split 7” series, this time by penultimate nyc-area/contemporary-era free-crush outfit sightings and... yours truly.
sightings side is so fucking brutal & hazy that i don’t feel i need to go into any real detail (trust me on this one, ok? have you heard their records? my god...) but i will say that this is now probably my single favorite track of theirs due to the profoundly excellent drumming, wasted fidelity, and general damage overall. perfect, in its own grand way...
my side (incidentally... the first non-remix hrvatski track to be released in over 2 and a half years... has it really been that long? damn, i’ve got to get cracking...) is a veritable “young person’s guide to hrvatski”, going in and out of like 37 different bits in just over 5 minutes (much like the track by french prog-demons heldon whose title i ganked here.) using some zonked record crackle, an argeiphontes lyre-destroyed soundfile incorporating the entire contents of my ca. 1998 sound library, doom metal guitars over some very intricate phased break-chop, a dense cutup of jim knox’s green hammond organ with tons of different breaks and serge modular synth blat overlaid, a beautiful recording of a chord organ drone from macao’s place in glasgow in 2002, vst-grunked melodica yammer from 1999 with fully rectified apache, finally landing in a big old mess of 4-part 200bpm gabber harmonies that quickly descend into a bit wherein i’m backwards crab-scratching an original copy of the winstons’ “amen brother” 7” ($$$) over samples of my own lush japanese healing bell chiming before imploding into the... explosion of a whale by dynamite on a beach near florence, oregon on november 12th, 1970 (now... if that doesn’t sound like the best way to spend five minutes of your life then i don’t think i even know you really.)
one-time pressing of some ungodly low number, get it while it’s hot (i’m sensing serious summer-jam top-down applications here folks, especially if your drive to the beach takes < 9 minutes and you happen to have a vinyl killer in your car.) |
| | | my cat hates this music. he ran under the bed when i put it on. my cat is an idiot. he doesn’t know anything. i tried to make him appreciate the nuances of this cranky, situationist piece of music, the album as a thudding detournement of negation politics and absurdist subversion; the intricacies of sightings’ repetitive, rumbling drone; or the tapestry of skittery elastic percussion woven by hrvatski; the resolute denial of any set of society’s confines that the record achieves; but he just looked at me, rolled on to his back and said innocently, “mrrrow?” what a pussy. “i thought you were punk”, i sneered. this is the language of greil marcus’ negation, or as he would say “a breach in the pop milieu; in the screen of cultural assumptions governing what one expected to hear and how one expected to respond”. this is why this record is another piece of the puzzle in the div/orce series. |
