played in st. louis while on tour recently. the night of the show had intense storms, and flooding ensued as we headed from the radio station to the club. the next morning, after a breakfast fruit cup, we headed to the mighty st. louis arch, as sara p. had never been. instead of ascending the manmade wonder that i had visited so recently, i decided to enjoy the beautiful weather in the park, by the mississippi river, with bobby m. and joe s.; paul d. was napping in the van. i had my minidisc and mic with the intent to capture some sounds, but i was largely aimless, which often leads to the most fun times capturing moments. bobby m. suggested i record the river. how obvious and cliche i thought. as they headed back for the van, i walked down to the flooded waterway. soon, as a young boy and his grandmother departed nearby, i was lost in the hypnotic sounds of the river. i quickly realized i should record these moments of relaxation and quiet on an otherwise chaotic tour. if nothing more than as an audio memory of the refreshing morning of solitude and meditation. there are three separate tracks. first, the water lapping against a flooded stairwell, the slapping sound seeming so alien to my ears. the second track, the water washing over a flooded bank of cobblestones, the sounds falling somewhere in between the lapping stairs and the final track: the wash of water over a flooded slope of smooth concrete. connor’s a good cat. long a denizen of hekla’s sordid online community we met him out there in the ether as a young, hungry fan of sound-at-large, nice to see him graduate from the bedroom ranks into real-world tangibility with such a nice mass-produced object... the first fruits of a new wave of american producer weaned not just on your standard aphecre ocean-crossing electronica but on zany a-musik / köln-lineage damage and the noises that followed it. beautiful, droney, and wise...

now i’m shedding" is the product of one evening’s unique continuous performance, split into two tracks for sides a and b of this 12” only release. connor grew up on the louisville sound, finding influence and impetus there when compelled to experiment with electronics. most of his music is sample based, but is later manipulated and transformed using customized doodads. his sound is organic, warm, and generally melodious (read as: not dissonant), but does not always rely on standard beats for rhythmic regularity. his samples gurgle and pop, flowing in and out of a fabricated field of sound, dramatically contrasting electronic music’s traditional sequenced beats. connor's interest in older avant-jazz and modern improvisation led him to his frustrating journey in-progress: finding a balance between the spontaneous and the rehearsed. zoviet france, faust, and nurse with wound inspire collage. cluster and herbie hancock inspire synthesis. morton feldman and terry riley inspire the flow and freedom. the red krayola, sun ra, and modern electronic like sonig and a-musik inspire the playfulness.jay ryan designed the album artwork. ryan and his partners at the bird machine hand-screened an edition of 1000 prints for this release. each record’s cover is a one-of-a-kind 12"x24" print. the combination of artistic efforts on the part of both shedding and jay ryan was an intentional choice; both artists translate their creativity through the language of the machine. they each use technology – tools of mass production – to attain something remarkably human. both the music and the packaging are handmade, the hands just happen to be wielding special tools. now i’m shedding marks a unity between analog and digital, perhaps proving that any contrast between the two concepts is rightfully negated by the necessity and subsequent influence of the human presence.
