seth nehil - jgrzinich
«gyre»

the three compositions on gyre were formed from varied location-based sound actions, which were then processed and composed in the studio. these acoustic recordings bear the trace of empty barns, forests, fields and hills. material origins of wood, glass, air and metal are transformed into abstraction. the result balances tangibility with disassociation, focused microscopy with breathy expanse, and raw physicality with ghostly glimmer.

john grzinich is a mixed media artist who has been working mainly with various aspects of sound experimentation since 1994. he has performed and worked extensively throughout europe and the us and has published a number of cds on such labels as staalplaat (nl), cmr (nz), erewhon (be), intransitive recordings (us), elevator bath (us), pale-disc (jp), cloud of statics(ch), and sirr(pt). these works consist of solo and and collaborative productions of experimental electro-acoustic sound pieces that result from studio and performance activity. currently john is a project and media lab coordinator for moks - center for art and social practice, an artist-run international residency center and project space in southeast estonia.

seth nehil is a sound and visual artist. he has composed sound works for cd, multi-speaker installation, solo and large-group concerts, dance, theater and multi-media performance. published recordings include collaborations with jgrzinich and olivia block and solo works such as tracing the skins of clouds (kaon fr); uva (20city jp); and umbra (...edition us), among others. he has performed throughout the us, in europe and japan. seth nehil is also co-editor and designer of fo a rm magazine, a journal of arts and research with a focus on sound art. he currently lives in portland, oregon.

seth nehil and john grzinich have worked collaboratively with sound and sonic performance since 1994. while their artistic paths have taken different geographical trajectories, a creative dialogue remains active. their long-term exploration of resonance as both a physical and social medium led to a pair of releases in 2002, "stria" (erewhon) and "confluence" (intransitive recordings). in the autumn of 2005, the two spent several months working together in estonia, finland and italy, continuing their open process of sonic exchange through a series of residencies, performances and sound workshops for youth.

seth nehil: umbra cd

umbra continues nehil's expansive and organic sound patterns. employing sounds of recorders, reeds, voice, and electronics, joyously rising and falling exhalations crest into ambivalent passages of machine drone and unexpected klaxons. all the while, one cannot ignore the presence of small happenings and events in the background, placed with immense care as if valuables in a shimmering glass case. the result is a meditative experience, at times recalling 'stimmung' by stockhausen or any number of works by phill niblock.

seth nehil & jgrzinich
stria

cdwhon008, released in may 2002, 3 tracks, 44'49".

seth nehil and john grzinich have been sound collaborators since 1994 when they began the electroacoustic ensemble alial straa. in 1998 they initiated a process of recording and experimentation that would result in a pair of full-length cds. the seed of the project originated in austin, texas with location specific recordings of found objects played by groups of people.. in the end, it had expanded into a three-year, transcontinental exchange of intensive interaction, questioning and dialogue.

the exploratory focus of stria/confluence is the idea of resonance; the phenomenon of natural vibrations that give rise to intensified or stable structures within sound bodies and fields. in the production of these works, the composers' approached resonance in both the acoustic sound behavior and the social phenomenon in group interaction and/or participation within the context of sound generating activities. it was again applied to the studio in the use of massive multiplications and layerings, resulting in deeply transforming, evolutionary sound fields.

these records extend the perspective elaborated by both artists through their previous solo and collaborative work (as can be heard on seth's releases on kaon, alluvial and 20 city, or john's duet with mnortham on staalplaat and orogenetics). these works further an interest in physical materials and natural acoustics which are consequently composed into imbedded, altered and engaging structures. taking form with the integrity of a living organism, these pieces invite the listener to find his way through the reticulated and stratified development of a subtly unfolding, organic sound-body.

stria and confluence are being released concurrently on erewhon (belgium) and intransitive recordings (us).

superlative collaboration between brendan murray and seth nehil; combining their respective strengths as audio-conjurers into something that’s neither seth’s plaintive field-studies and concept-pieces nor brendan’s jet-plane roar/blissed-out drone...

...actually much of this feels closer to a radiophonic construct or “traditionalmusique concrète; seth’s source material(s) (atmospheric events, percussion) isn’t so much blurred-out by brendan’s elongation techniques as magnified... hidden events & detail become motifs, the slight dynamic shifts become the form.

i’ll be spending much, much more time with this recording over the coming weeks; i suggest you do the same.

sillage - s/t (sedcd049)

sillage is brendan murray and seth nehil in collaboration

certainly amongst our most challenging releases, sillage is the mind-blowing collaboration of brendan murray and seth nehil and is the result of a first meeting in a live setting from 2004, a performance that was loud, powerful, and very successful. this event combined with knowing these electronic sound artists previous work as generally maximalist and full makes sillage both curious and nearly shocking in this light, as here the material is continually turning inward, trying to push out but always being submerged. this document takes many, many listens and can remain baffling and impenetrable. yet with patience one does get underneath it, and once this happens the sonic rewards are otherworldly and deep. followers of either or both artists work should recognize his particular contributions but this venture has provoked new and uncharted territory from both.

i’m a huge fan of both olivia block and seth nehil’s solo output, actually wasn’t aware until recently that they shared a project together (alial straa) all those years back...

this can be seen as something of a “reunion” - with guests kyle bruckmann of ekg, mnortham, and michael shannon (good to see mike on there, the animist orchestra member who is now an honorary “nightcrawler” after joining us for an evening’s music down in orlando last month.)

the music retains olivia’s random-feeling jump-cuts with seth’s particular methods of sound-construct ; this is certainly rooted in the collage tradition, although the two take liberties with materials, almost focusing on banal non-occurences within the collected sounds (as opposed to... say... always fading in before an attack.)
sedimental press release...
sunder, unite began with the destruction of musical sources through the insertion of silence and/or faulty connection. it continued with the playing of small objects, fire and grass on our tour of japan in 2000, being multiplied on many small speakers in each space and recorded in these situations. sources continued to be recorded in our locations, train stations, a market in kyoto... sounds were traded and holes punched in, surfaces distorted. transparencies of sound were overlaid and cut, residues remain. we followed an ever-shifting ground and rate-of-change. a skip and fade, an intuitive mix and then traded again. the crumbling recording of metal. a walking recording of creaking wood. speakers in a room.

composed 1999-2001. instruments and treatments by seth nehil and olivia block except: kyle bruckmann, oboe, chinese oboe; michael northam, objects; michael shannon, reeds. photograph by carmen resendez. drawing by bethany wright and s.n. with thanks to koji tano for assistance in japan.

olivia block is a contemporary composer and sound artist who combines field recordings, scored segments for acoustic instruments, and electronically generated sound. her recorded work seeks to introduce, set at play, and ultimately reconcile nature with artifice in the realms of music and sound. in the process, "organic" sound becomes subtly processed, digitized and abstracted; "inorganic" sound becomes self-replicating and animate; and "musical" elements such as chamber instruments are defamiliarized from their traditional associations, freeing them to participate in the larger aesthetic possibilities of sound.

seth nehil (b. 1973) began working with sound around 1990 using found objects and instruments, old records, reel-to-reel machines, discarded magnetic tape and other detreitus. alial straa was formed in 1994 in collaboration with john grzinich as a studio projectinvolving grzinich's handmade piano-wire instruments and nehil's analog tape-treatments and objects. joined by olivia block, the group went on to perform as an electro-acoustic improvisational trio. seth nehil worked with experimental arts magazine n d as writer and artistic contributor from 1996-2000, and received a ba in studio art from the university of texas at austin in 1998. beginning with 1998's tracing the skins of clouds, seth nehil has pursued an interest in the sensual surface of found objects and materials, and the inner dynamics of their acoustical properties. without altering those properties, the possibilities of the studio are explored as a means of transforming sounds into dense interactions - meditations on physicality, germination and disorientation. recent work has included continued collaborations with john grzinich and olivia block in studio works as well as soundtracks for experimental theatre group hand2mouth

recorded at splinter group studio in chicago by rob drinkwater. field material recorded at black lake and in echo canyon amphitheatre, nm with seth nehil and in the upper peninsula, mi.

the debut release from the talented chicago-based composer olivia block. in the few short years of her re-location from austin, texas to chicago she has become a noted figure within its underground and experimental circles performing at the women's avant fest (lounge ax) in '97, the eye of the ear sound festival (links hall) in '98, and women mixing in sound festival(artemesia gallery) in '98, as well as playing trumpet for a palace bros. project and collaborating in live performance with pauline oliveros.

block is an electro-acoustic and modern instrumental composer whose recorded compositions combine layered, processed wind and string instruments with processed sounds from sections of field recordings she has collected from various natural landscapes. her performances include minimalistic scored musical sections played live by a quintet accompanied by taped material , often sounds of field recordings, or the same quintet previously recorded and electronically manipulated. block herself "plays" found objects and instruments (trumpet). the resulting surrealistic sonic landscape and the contrast between these elements create a paradoxical element to the work. in all of her recent works she emphasizes comparisons between organic or "real" sounds and electronic ones, and she demonstrates how electronic technology imitates natural evolution using similar sounds from both worlds. she also explores the difference between "sound" and "music" and the creation of experience through emotional, subjective or intellectual, objective means.

olivia block is self-taught, and began her process in the art-pop band the marble index, where she sang, played guitar, and created abstract tapes for parts of the songs. she left the band in 1995 and began concentrating on electro-acoustic compositions. soon after she joined alial straa, an improv-and experimental group with john grznich and seth nehil. the trio held site specific performances around austin using sounds that existed at the site and homemade instruments. among her influence she cites feldman, ligeti, conrad, g. toniutti, gagaku, baca, eric b & rakim, n. roeg, a. goldsworthy and non-academic intuitively minded artists and composers.

pure gaze is olivia block's first release and sedimental feels this work will clearly place her in the realm of composers to pay very close attention to heading into the next century.
