digiv004: seht "hrry" lp+3" cdr

since digitalis first planted its roots over six years ago, few artists have been as integral to and representative of the label as new zealand's drone king, seht. we've released three of his albums and he's appeared on multiple compilations and collaborations. seht has always been the work of one stephen clover. he comes from a long line of great kiwis like the dead c and birchville cat motel, but has always blazed along similar trails as giants such as tony conrad, eno, and olivier messiaen. that being said, none of it prepared us for the leap forward he took on his first ever vinyl release, "hrry."

while some artists struggle to make music that is wholly avante-garde and still approachable and listenable, clover avoids those pitfulls masterfully. "hrry" is in exercise in the use of crackling electronics, minimal beats, computer manipulation and solid-state drones. each track slowly progresses as they build off each other and form a sprawling conglomeration of tones. it's as if you're stuck in a post-apocalyptic dreamworld where industrial giants are fighting back against the warm, relentless elegance of nature. even though the arsenal clover is using is as unnatural as it gets, the music on "hrry" displays such an innate organicness that it's almost confusing. from the computerized voice of "erkk" to the throbbing beat of "spft," it's as though he's gone so far into the mechanical, man-made world that he's come all the way to the other side.

"hrry" is a dark album that is glazed with a sense of hope. echoes of the ghosts of basinski ride through these ambient rivers, trying to find new forms of electronic music. it's music for the second coming... of what? an era where all the rotting buildings and shades of grey breathe new life into the elemental ashes of fallen empires.

lp comes in silver & black fold-out poster sleeve and is strictly limited to 150 copies.

unpredictable collaboration between new-zealand based sound/artist stephen clover (more commonly referred to in lengthy discographies as seht) and cambridge, ma based composer/improvisor howard stelzer.

what starts off as something akin to one of howie’s woozy cassette-based improvised performances quickly graduates into a suite of 4 extended meditations on audio fidelity, real and imagined space(s), and time-frozen concrète - as the drones progress, they get farther and farther away yet more electrified, culminating in the gorgeous final piece (sounding not unlike a sunn 0))) soundcheck recorded through the wall from the restaurant-kitchen next to the venue...)

superlative work from both; an excellent gateway into either/or universe ...

int028 seht & stelzer exactly what you lost cd

this first album of cross-hemisphere hum by seht (the nom de musique of one stephen clover) and howard stelzer emerged organically via tapes shared through the post between new zealand and boston over the course of a year or so. without any spoken agenda or external organizing concept from the start, the music willed itself into a darkly psychedelic, implacably melancholy haze. a quick scramble of caffeinated tape action kicks things off, then the album rapidly dissipates into a thick, black sleep of environmental debris and humid fog. worn loops were played into various outdoor acoustic environments (playgrounds, front porches, trees, other prosaic spots), then fed back into low-tech machines for further harmonic decay. shapes form in the shadows and slip away as the edges blur. after a few attempts to heave itself up onto its feet, exactly what you lost eventually huffs its last breath and dissolves in a cavern of industrial tics.

• seht’s previous work has been published by celebrate psi phenomena, last visible dog, digitalis, and pseudoarcana.
• howard stelzer has recorded albums with giuseppe ielasi, john olson (spykes, wolf eyes), the bsc, the cherry point, frans de waard (kapotte muziek), and jason talbot.

2003 release from celebrate psi phenomenon artist stephen clover; almost sticks out like a sore thumb from the c-psi-p pack for being quite hi-fi (in comparison at least.) most pieces here are concerned with very thoughtful processing of guitar sounds; there’s a very nice 11 minute invocation of fahey’s ghost via fingerpicked acoustic guitar over some mean low-end square waves (not unlike something jim o’rourke would have done a few years back), a few almost mille-plateaux-esque resonance studies, and a bit of prepared acoustic sound-gathering... not to mention the guitar-free pieces, which combine field recordings and found dialogue with musique concrète-lineage collage work. listens/reads more like a composers’ album than a collection of home-studio after-hours experiments, might be the one to start with if’n that’s your proclivity...

while the post-corpus hermeticum sound may seem a different beast altogether than your copy of le jazz non, the change, with inspection, is at best superficial. minimalism and drone remain, but while 'maximalist' minimalism has dissapeared, minimalism itself remains with heavy sound sampling and warped (ie destroyed) electronics. seht is most certainly one of the newer generation to rise out of the ashes of hcorp, and much to his advantage, since the ensuing silence seems more his tool than the blare of guitar feedback. here a sensitive ear is lent to even the most mundane field recordings, yielding this recording, a mix of acoustic guitar improvisations, drone, field recordings and electronics.
