| most of you slept on this compilation when i first listed it in 2003 - which is a damn shame as it’s really one of the best (if not the best) overview(s) of the contemporary australian experimental music scene; including much exclusive material from all involved - an a-list of said inasmuch as it can be!
many of the names herein that were completely unknown back in 2003 have gone on to bigger & brighter venues/labels: chris smith’s album was reissued on emperor jones right before he did a brilliant split w/the ivytree on fatcat... joyce hinterding released an excellent album on sigma/antiopic... brendan walls did a disc for idea then a collaboration with daisuke suzuki & another solo record for christoph heeman’s dom... scott horscroft released his epic “8 guitars” on staubgold/quecksilber...as did minit with their “now right here” and their organ eye collab. with osso exotico... and of course pimmon, oren ambarchi, & clue to kalo went on to rule the known universe with their records on tigerbeat6, touch/southern lord, and mush (respectively.)
a better place to start in your local appreciation of this set of sound-producing folk is non-existent..
(original description) :
sensibly curated collection of contemporary australian sound-art and sound-music (with a little music-sound thrown in for good measure). only a scant few of these names are entirely new to me (qua, ray diode, joyce hinterding, magmafinder), the rest being the cream of the crop of australia’s burgeoning experimental music scene.
inside one finds much guitar-sourced experimentation (ambarchi, smith, horscroft), laptop/computer-based instrumental exploration (candlesnuffer, pimmon, qua, GCTTCATT, julian knowles, scott horscroft, peter blamey), austere soundscape (matthew thomas, ray diode, dworzec, cray, magmafinder, minit), extra-musical acoustic/electric phenomenon (joyce hinterding, sue harding, alan lamb), dubbed-out jam or bedroom whisper-pop monster (tim koch, clue to kalo, pretty boy crossover). much to be joyous of in general. in all cases, fine extended examples of each respective composer/performer’s modus (most pieces hovering around the 10 minute mark) and are exclusive to this set as far as i can tell. great stuff... |

| motion – movement in australian sound is a generous, 2-cd overview of 22 artists representing australia’s burgeoning terrain of electronic and experimental music.from scott horscroft’s mesmerising piece for eleven guitars, the sublimely sweet, driving tones of pretty boy crossover, sue harding’s melodies from dot matrix printers to renown veteran alan lamb’s awe-inducing casting of field recordings from the west australian outback, motioncasts wide to expose some of the most creative and fascinating sonic brilliance australia has to offer.
some artists, such as sydney’s pimmon and oren ambarchi, have already garnered much overseas recognition and success for their work, with guitar improvisor ambarchi recently awarded an honourary mention in the prestigious prix ars electronica, europe’s awards for cyberarts.
to ensure some kind of cohesiveness with such a diverse array of artists, as well as fresh, original material, each act was asked to contribute a track with an open-ended brief in mind – exploring ideas of motion in some way through sound. the resulting overall quality shows a depth of thought andfeeling from some seriously engaging talent, pushing boundaries as well as coming up with some most moving music |
