april 2010 release ; much anticipated recorded debut (the trio version made their live debut at the root strata on land fest back in september to rave reviews / slightly melted cilia) of this new scott goodwin project, merging maryanne amacher style inner-ear hallucination(s) with sähko-style raw electrical pulse & detroit/chicago-leaning machine music ...

first remotely dance-music-oriented thing i’ve heard in about 5 years that i’ve actually been excited about (well, maybe except for that reissue of the robert hood “minimal nation” material ; stuff is incredible) ... it’s all done with a home-brew modular synth (which is a piece of art in its own right) played/channeled by scott, with a live drummer (at the show it was heavy winged’s jed bindeman, not sure if he’s on the recorded version as well) along with live-played octapad sounds ... highly recommended !!!

operative "pulse"

"pulse" is our homage to the square wave and to its self-modulation, implying steady rhythm but also variation by its very structure. binaural high-hats beat out a martial time while analog circuits bubble out into a thick, stroboscopic sunset. if our song "ramp" is james tenney trying to meet joey beltram half-way, then maybe "pulse" is steve reich "music for 18 musicians" slouching towards orbital's "halcyon & on & on".

october 2011 release ; ... one-off collaboration between pete swanson & scott “operator” goodwin, hedging pete’s claustrophobic “wall of crisp™” with scott’s psycho-acoustics & poly-rhythmic clatter ...

... while a couple of numbers touch on the sort of industrial techno machinations you’d imagine in your mind’s eye when such a meeting-up is proposed, this is actually a rather nuanced & quite spooky, allowing the ghosts embedded in the duo’s machines free reign to act at will ... an excellent tape.

really proud of this one. vepa is a tape of pete swanson and i playing music together for the first time. for eight years we've been pushing each other to make the best music we can make by exchanging honest critique on each other's music and generally musing over expensive beers about why we even do this music thing at all. usually we were too focused on our own projects to really jam out casually, but we made time for some sessions before pete left portland for nursing school at columbia.

for vepa we attempted to combine some approaches we've both been working on lately, namely pete's tape-saturated echo / loop processing and some of the rhythmic density we'd been exploring in operative. it pairs really nicely with pete's recent, excellent man with potential, but is much more destroyed and laconically paced.

on earth is the first studio document created by the group, recorded with marcelo spinna at the space in may 2006 with production assistance from pete swanson (d. yellow swans). while previous cd-r releases were entirely improvised, on earth is comprised of three untitled pieces composed by the group with elements of restrained improvisation. musically, each piece has a specific concern, ranging from extremely subtle microtonal shifts to distorted crashes of intervals against one another. on earth captures the reductive bonus sound with all the sustained tones and sparkling textures, but with a more focused and succinct delivery.

september 2009 release ; ... this is where i start to get really excited about the prospect of tapes ; previously these sort(s) of forward thinking sound-art tactics would have been relegated exclusively to the domain of the european post-dance music label system and/or an over-thought, globally-marketed and under-sold cd edition ...

you’d have to have left your sensibilities in the coat-check at this point to deny that justin’s eye-catching edition here (coming as a silk-screened norelco holding a user-configurable j-card & a “professionally printed” tape) is far more appealing as a pocketable medium (esp. at the lower price-point) than said ...

but i digress ; the music here, consisting of an automatically gated (not sure if he’s using the same system as when i caught him a few months back ; but then it was a contact mic inside a crumpled brown paper bag - the individual decompressions triggering the changes) digitally synthesized pulse wave set, in inarguably rich, harkening back to both the mille plateaux era of digital-music tactics & even the sonic arts union’s fascination with process-music ...

one of the tapes of the year thusfar ; highly recommended !!!
