burned bridges and lost loves
2cd / b-boy 023

burned bridges and lost loves is the second part of a project in which friends, colleagues and lovers were asked to remix the works of chicago improvisation-trio tv pow. like its predecessor powerful friends and devoted lovers, a double-album that contains 29 remixes, the second and final installment also offers remixes of tracks that are mostly taken from tv pow’s album friendship patrol. adding another 31 remixes, the total amount of remixes is now equal to the amount of tracks that feature on friendship patrol. on the original score tv pow managed to create a evolving soundscape of unidentifiable field recordings, minimal electronics and serene ambient drones. it’s no surprise that friendship patrol happened to be a grateful source for further exploration.

burned bridges and lost loves includes contributions from tarentel, tim hecker, sachiko m, illusion of safety, wolf eyes, alva noto, stephan mathieu, david grubbs and francisco lopez, amongst many others. these contributors could be classified as a representative sample of currently influential artists in experimental and electronic music.

burned bridges and lost loves comes with artwork by meeuw, yet another remix of the original artwork of friendship patrol.

first volume in a pair of summer 2007 releases by otomo yoshihide’s new jazz orchestra, here with an expanded lineup featuring vocalists kahimi karie & margareth kammerer. the group tackle three eric dolphy charts, two by takeo yamashita, and a whole mess of otomo originals...

one of the more approachable entries into otomo’s vast, vast canon; were it not for sachiko’s incessant 8-16k tweetering throughout, i could almost mistake some of this for 60s/70s film music; which is to say the band stay inside the reigns for the majority of the session(s)...

otomo yoshihide's new jazz orchestra
out to lunch - onjo plays eric dolphy's "out to lunch"

onjo's 2nd works is the covers of famous eric dolphy's "out to lunch"! otomo's post-modern interpretation of dolphy's compositions by orchestra is very beautiful and intensive. "gazzelloni" is translated to hardcore punk version, or "straight up and down will be back" is translated to improvisation that is swift to respond each other and most beautiful onkyo sound. this is the marvels of "jazz"!

all music composed by eric dolphy, except "will be back" by onjo
all music arranged by otomo yoshihide, except "hat and beard" theme horn arranged by eto naoko, "staright up and down" theme horn arranged by mizutani hiroaki.

sachiko m: sinewaves (1, 3), contact microphone on objects (2)
ami yoshida: voice

sachiko m and ami yoshida, both from tokyo, met in 1997 and formed the duo of cosmos the following year.

sachiko m has developed a unique style utilizing a memory-free sampler, creating pure, piercing sine waves with the device's built-in test tones and noise. she has also recently begun exploring the use of contact microphones, as documented on the second track of tears. sachiko has worked extensively as a solo artist, in groups such as filament, i.s.o., and hoahio, and in duo with toshimaru nakamura, as captured on do (erstwhile). she also founded and runs the superb amoebic label.

ami yoshida strives to create a pure sound, abstracting her voice until it becomes almost completely unrecognizable. in 1997, she released a duo cd, spiritual voice (1040), with tamaru on electronics. cosmos is the first project since then to feature her prominently, although she appears on otomo yoshihide's cathode and ensemble cathode projects, and her solo pieces are a highlight of the 10-cd japan improv box set.

though both women reside in tokyo, cosmos only perform together occasionally, so each meeting is very special. tears is taken from two of those rare encounters, in september 2001 and february 2002. sachiko and ami incrementally build an atmosphere of fragile, yet deeply focused, intensity, forging a symbiotic fusion between human and electronic expression.

erik m: minidiscs, sampler, fx
otomo yoshihide: turntables, guitar, electronics (on 1)
sachiko m: sampler with sine wave (on 2)
christian marclay: turntables (on 3)

poire_z, the quartet of günter müller, voice crack and erikm, has been performing together since december 1998. in the summer of 2000, they began a series of performances which included a different fifth member each time. these guests have included keith rowe, martin tétreault, lê quan ninh, florian hecker, and kevin drumm in addition to the three excerpted sets which make up +, featuring otomo yoshihide, sachiko m, and christian marclay.

günter müller, a swiss percussionist who is increasingly focused on electronics, has worked with a wide range of musicians over the past two decades, including richard teitelbaum, taku sugimoto, jim o'rourke, dieb 13 and butch morris. many of his projects are documented on his groundbreaking label, for 4 ears, including the initial poire_z cd. swiss duo voice crack (norbert möslang and andy guhl) have been playing together since 1972. since 1983, they've been working exclusively with "cracked everyday-electronics", modifying and/or abusing small household machines in order to produce extreme, unique noises. france's erikm burst onto the scene in the mid-'90s as a virtuoso turntablist. since then, he has gradually shifted his output into a more abstract vein, sometimes even abandoning the turntables entirely in favor of a minidisc and sampler, as he does here.

as reflected in the arresting cd design by frequent voice crack collaborator alex hanniman, the quintet recordings presented here tie together multiple threads from these musicians' careers. otomo yoshihide, sachiko m and müller recorded as a trio on filament 2 (for 4 ears); erikm participated in otomo's superb les sculpteurs de vinyl project, as documented on memory & money (stupeur & trompette); pioneering turnatablist christian marclay first recorded with müller in 1992, and has an ongoing duo project with erikm, as well as a trio which adds dj olive; otomo yoshihide and voice crack recorded the acclaimed bits, bots and signs (erstwhile).

+ is poire_z's third cd, following the self-titled debut on for 4 ears, and presque_chic (sonoris). the guest musicians' distinctive personalities define each track, infiltrating the core quartet's whirlwind of ideas - influencing, gently nudging, but never impeding or derailing the constant progress.

gene coleman / franz hautzinger / sachiko m / otomo yoshihideconcert in st. louis” compact disc

grob press release...

gene coleman/franz hautzinger/sachiko m/otomo yoshihide - concert in st. louis

in the last four or five years there has been a clear set trend towards stillness in improvised music. the classical parameters – the forming of energy states, the spontaneous, dense communication – are not relevant to this music, but rather the empty spaces, the disparate, non-dynamic, the recessed. stillness.

this trend is not without its detractors, and from various positions (musicians, theoreticians) it is feared that too much of the former tilled field is being forfeited. there is polemic: improvised music tends to attach itself to trends in new music, after they have long become passé. like the trend of the non-gestural stillness.

gene coleman, bass clarinetist, long-standing protagonist of chicago’s most varying experimental and avant-garde scene (he can be heard, among others, on the albums of gastr del sol), a festival organizer and curator on the go, lives mostly from his compositions. he does not have to hang onto any trend, he does not feel any need to innovate and does not see himself exposed to any scene pressure. gene coleman plays and acts autonomously.

for a tour in the autumn of 2002 he put together a quartet out of musicians with whom he has worked together before. franz hautzinger (quarter-tone trumpet, grob 211, grob 313/4, grob 425, grob 435, grob 544), sachiko m (sinus generator, contact microphones, grob 432, 435), otomo yoshihide (guitar, turntables, grob 432) are all world renowned musicians and improvisers who have mastered the use of musical stillness.

so these are the best prerequisites not to reproduce the “cliché of stillness,” but rather to initiate a restful as well as very open and highly flexible improvising process. stillness is not assumed here, is not a result and an purpose worth aspiring for, but rather it is a means to form. the strong rustling improvisation does not deplete itself, but rather brings forth new constellation of their playing together (also next to each other)

it is slow, peaceful, very relaxed flowing music. but whoever listens closely will hear the tension and the exertion, the wrestling to create expression.

next year grob will release a cd that will present some of his current compositions.

keith rowe / oren ambarchi / sachiko m / otomo yoshihide / robbie avenaimthumb” compact disc

  • thumb (30:35)
i had a chat with oren a few months back about this blinding gig he'd played at the forum... err... instants chavires with the aforementioned lot and that, most unfortunately, it wasn't recorded as it was one of the most stimulating gigs of his young career. well... turns out it was recorded and here it is c/o felix klopotek's improv powerhouse grob. very good for us... 1 track, 30 minutes, 35 seconds. questionable fidelity, especially given the nature of the music, but that's never stopped anyone in the past... a slice of real life. in a vacuum.
grob press release...
oren ambarchi/robbie avenaim/keith rowe + otomo yoshihide + sachiko m - thumb (10.2002)

the moment before a rock band steps on stage: the amplifiers have been hooked up and are humming, the glaring flood lights are buzzing, a roadie is fiddling round with a drum set, pushes it a few centimeters until it is at the perfect place. above all the atmosphere is electrified.

this is the atmosphere the music on thumb conveys. of course a rock band will never step on stage, of course, the musicians make music the entire time (even when you don't believe it, because you don't think you can hear it! here stand, or rather sit, five musicians on stage).

this cd is the result of a recording or stage situation, happening so suddenly, that happened on may 29, 2001 in the legendary paris club, instants chavires. the trio ambarchi/avenaim/rowe (two prepared guitars, a little electronics and percussion) were on tour at the time in france (their first tour) and met the duo otomo/sachiko (guitar, turntables and sine wave generator), who are well-established and have proven themselves through uncountable recordings.

[do we have to introduce the musicians? hardly. ambarchi, rowe, yoshihide and m have strongly influenced the new improvised music of the 90's on numerous records and leave no doubt that they are playing the music of the moment in the new decade. avenaim, the percussionist, or roadie who pushes the drum set around, is a bit less well-known. he is the closest musical friend of ambarchi, both went to the same school and together worked through free jazz 15 years ago. up to today the have been playing together. his musical contribution is not a decibel less important than his friend's.]

the result of this meeting is not a hectic-unconcentrated jam session, not a labored search and then a timid find. what we hear is maximal concentration. and consolidation-not, however, in view of noise and energy. they condense their music activity into two or three lines: tender, but played all the more resolute and direct. the five play in this moment exactly as secure as if they had played together for years. thumb features the entire performance of this quintet. although it lasted only a little longer than a half-an-hour, the overview is quickly lost. have they already finished (have they even begun?)? how long have they been playing? ten minutes? twenty? an hour? at the end, their sound actually leaves not question unanswered.

thumb is the beginning of a series of cds that will focus on the cooperation of oran ambarchi and keith rowe. in spring 2003, a cd will appear from ambarchi, rowe, and avenaim, then in summer 2003 with rowe and ambarchi as duo, recorded in real time.

design by himitsu hakase
packaged in a cardboard jacket

since the late '90s sachiko m has been stirring up the improvised music scenes in japan and the west -- and gaining an enthusiastic following -- with her unique sound, consisting entirely of sine waves. this is sachiko m's first solo album since bar sachiko (improvised music from japan, imj-517), released three and a half years ago.

bar sachiko was a work made up exclusively of sustained sine wave tones. in contrast, salon de sachiko is comprised throughout of short, very thin beeps--sometimes rhythmic, sometimes interspersed with longish silences -- sent out from two oscillators, much like sparks thrown off by sparklers near one's left and right ears. the album's one track, which is exactly an hour long, was recorded in july 2007.

sachiko m: two sinewaves on one empty sampler

sachiko m is a musician who uses the sampler as an instrument. rather than apply the device's original function of sampling recorded material, she makes music using nothing but its internal test tone sine waves. her approach to this radically minimalistic sound and meticulously thorough music has created a sensation worldwide. currently one of the most sought-after improvisers on the scene, sachiko m collaborates with influential artists both inside and outside japan. her projects include filament, a duo with otomo yoshide, and cosmos, a duo with ami yoshida. this is sachiko m's third solo album, following sine wave solo (amoebic) and derive (noise asia). while the two earlier recordings are made up entirely of short tracks, bar sachiko is a single 60-minute performance using just two sine waves. a shocking creation!

blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum.

book + dvd.
editors: brian marley and mark wastell.
published by sound 323.
341 printed pages - full colour. hardback.
publishing date - 1st january 2006

what is the most significant development that has occurred in adventurous music during the last decade? it's arguably neither a technique-driven development nor a technological one. rather, it's how we, musicians and audience alike, have opened our ears to the world and embraced its sounds as both a musical resource and as music itself. blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum explores the work and aesthetic of various cutting edge musicians, environmental/sound artists and noise-makers.

as well as profiles of richard chartier, the necks, john wall and sachiko m, the book contains explorations of the history and changing nature of free improvisation, of cage's iconoclastic 4'33", and of where to draw the line (somewhat tentatively, to be sure) between improvisation and composition.

there is, in addition, a series of personal statements by almost two dozen musicians, composers and sound artists, collected by rhodri davies; and in out in the field bertrand denzler and jean-luc guionnet interview improvisers about their music and group the anonymised answers thematically. the authors of the principal chapters - david toop, clive bell, brian marley, dan warburton, andy hamilton and will montgomery - are well-known and respected writers on music/sound. machines, noise and improvisation are factors common to all of the chapters in the book. david reid's dvd selection of video performances also carries this theme. the performances, all filmed during the last five years and part of his growing archive, represent a diverse range of musicians and their musics.

note, however, that the dvd content is neither illustrative of nor subordinate to the written material in the book; it comprises a chapter in its own right.

a feature of blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum that will be much remarked upon is damien beaton's lavish design, which makes the book so much more than a mere receptacle for words.

the amplify 2002: balance box set has been designed and assembled to recreate as much as possible the experience of being in tokyo in late october 2002 for the week-long whirlwind of music and camaraderie revolving around the 2002 amplify festival.

the annual series of amplify festivals began in 2001 in nyc, followed in 2002 by the event documented in this box. amplify returned to nyc in february 2003, and the next amplify will be in cologne and berlin in may 2004, co-curated by keith rowe and jon abbey. the festivals are closely tied to the erstwhile label, and are designed to showcase an ambitious amount of music within a short time period, demanding increased attention and focus from both the musicians and the audience. this box set aims to convey at least part of the intense atmosphere created by amplify's climate of total immersion.

the amplify 2002: balance box set contains over seven hours of music on seven cds, consisting of:

1) eight of the twelve sets from the festival itself, which took place over three nights at star pine's cafe in kichijoji, tokyo.

2) two cds compiled from the smaller club shows which took place before and after the festival itself, organized by toshimaru nakamura and taku sugimoto, including an entire disc by the all-star guitar septet of keith rowe, tetuzi akiyama, oren ambarchi, nakamura, otomo yoshihide, burkhard stangl and sugimoto.

3) a studio recording by the duo of günter müller and toshimaru nakamura, recorded that same week. this disc has been carefully sequenced and constructed, and is essentially a regular erstwhile release contained within the larger box.

the box also features a dvd by filmmaker jonas leddington and a 52 page, full-color booklet with photography by yuko zama and twenty separate essays by many of the people involved in the festival.

leddington's dvd contains a 109-minute visual document titled "balance beams," which is built around the festival itself and includes structured excerpts from all twelve sets, commentary from the musicians, behind-the-scenes footage, as well as images and sounds from tokyo. footage of the stangl/kurzmann set includes cuts of viennese filmmaker michaela grill's schnee video, as it was shown live in tokyo.

the dvd extras include 5.1 surround sound audio-only versions of the rowe/lehn/schmickler and müller/otomo sets, as well as three short individual features based on the three nights of outside festival performances that discs 1 and 7 were chosen from, including keith rowe discussing with the other guitarists how he believes a musician should approach performing the graphic score of cardew's treatise.

the box set is a limited edition of 800 copies, and will not be reprinted.

gallery off site in yoyogi, tokyo, is one of the world's most well known venues for new improvised music. meeting at off site, the monthly improvisational performance series hosted by tetuzi akiyama and toshimaru nakamura, has in recent years been off site's main event. the six tracks on this cd are edited recordings of the meetings of may through october, 2002. this is the final collection of original-format meetings, in which hosts akiyama and nakamura improvised with one or two guest musicians from japan or overseas. (subsequently, the format was changed to a solo session by a guest musician.) in other words, it is the final segment of a trilogy. here is the "off site sound," characterized by extreme quietness and sparsity of sound. as a document of internationally recognized cutting-edge improvised music, meeting at off site vol. 3 should not be missed. guest musicians are hakon kornstad, masafumi ezaki, o.blaat, sachiko m, oren ambarchi, keiichi sugimoto, paul hood, and günter müller.

lucky kitchen (spain) #lk 011 cd

i love fantasy” compact disc

  • evol - wasitaratisaw? (09:59)
  • felix kubin | klangkrieg | reznicek (11:11)

lucky kitchen press release...
fantasy takes place in a dimension not subject to the normal bounds of material reality. fantasy is created by the ability of the imagination to form ideas beyond sensory detail. for the child (and often the artist) there is no essential division between reality and unreality. only through what coleridge termed the "willing suspension of unbelief" can an "adult" obtain the full impact of fantasy. *

1 aerospace soundwise is todd carter, a sound engineer from chicago. in addition to his solo work on diskono, he is a member of tv pow with releases on gentle giant, box media, and upcoming on staalplaat.

2 evol are journalists and musicians anna and roc from barcelona. in addition to work on their own label alku, they have work released on mego.

3 felix kubin and tim buhr are klangkrieg, who along with reznicek made this track for us. all three have been very busy in the hamburg electronic silly for many years. they have work together and seperately on a-musik, audioview, cling film, staubgold, and others.

4 sachiko matsubara is an artist from tokyo. her work with ground zero, iso, and filament are considered classics already. in addition to her own label amoebic, she has work on extreme and more.

as an introduction to this album here are some extracts from david toop's liner notes.

"most music in japan has little to recommend it; it is a sonic equivalent of those brutal concrete towers or the transitory chaos of multi-storey teen-fashion emporia in aoyama.

but a sonic underground thrives, creatively if not financially, and perhaps it should be compared with the shabby golden-gai drinking dens of shinjuku, faint reminders of a lost time when desire and transgression shared endless cups of sake with political and artistic radicalism...

...how is it possible to live within and react against an extremely regulated society, politically moribund, engulfed by consumerism, technological innovation, mediated images, a confusion of influences and traditions? agitation and stillness may seem to be opposing strategies, yet they converge at a certain point...

...surging deep beneath the noir turbulence of merzbow and so takahashi, the car crash ruins of otomo yoshihide and ground zero, the curated urban fragments of viewmaster, the technocratic complexity of bisk and yoshihiro hanno's multiphonic ensemble, the piercing intensity of sachiko m, the childlike placidity of aki onda, yoshio machida and haco, is a conflicting sense of clarity attained through struggle. out of turmoil, a stained purity is revealed.

listening to this alchemical transmutation, i think of fujieda baian, the central character of shotaro ikenami's historical novels. professional assassin and acupuncturist, baian kills to live, lives to heal. at the beginning of yasunari kawabata's novel, the sound of the mountain, ogata shingo hears an elusive sound, the faint rumble of the mountain at the rear of his house. "it was as if a demon had passed, making the mountain sound out." shingo shakes his head, thinking the disturbance might be a ringing in his ears. feeling fear, perhaps he hears the collapsing certainties of the future, our present, where everything is in flux.
