second / 2002 full-length from this new zealand by way of london by way of new zealand again comprovisor / imposer of note (recently: the sakada trio with amm’s eddie prévost and mattin, and a third solo disc for touch in early 2004), (earlier: collaborations with both pita and fennesz (separately), and the thela and partmetier groups with dean roberts and dion workman, not to mention a fantastic remix of hrvatski’s “insect digestion melancholy” on a klangkrieg kompilation) ...

now working exclusively in the digital domain, the fidelity of rosy’s work herein shimmers with finer detail to sparser sound materials. lovely, lovely audio and the perfect “sister” to the “iris” disc ...
sigma editions press release...
the tenth sigma release is by rosy parlane and comes four years after the inaugural sigma, 001: parlane's #1-4.

with this new work, entitled getxo, the parlane sensibility is recognizable: an interest in sublimity, minor keys and mesmerizing repetition. track one, for example with its simple repeated four note phrase, is like melancholy carnival music devoid of sentimentality. the repetition in this track mimics mechanical reproduction in that the quality degenerates over the course of the track, ending in an enveloping, ever stronger fuzz.

in comparison to #1-4,getxo is lighter, looser, takes itself less seriously. however, at the same time its tracks are more varied, intricate, difficult and internally more complex, moving between density and thinness. the relationship between the six tracks is also more complex, with the tracks existing as pairs (1&6, 2&5, 3&4) in terms of structure, source material and method.

since making #1-4 parlane has shifted from relatively lo-fi techniques of construction to the digital realm of computer music and this shift in technology is reflected in the intricacy of the tracks and the quality of the sounds. #1-4's dark and urgent rumblings have been superceded by crispness and clarity.

getxo is part of the evolved and evolving parlane aesthetic, very knowledgeable, drawing on a wide range of influences, and innately musical, seductive and affecting, full of quiet and not so quiet catches and hooks, so easy that the difficulty is camoflagued.

rosy parlanejessamine” compact disc

  • part one (13:13)

  • part three (19:08)
november 2006 release from rosy parlane - i’ve been eagerly awaiting this moment for many years now as rosy’s first album “iris” has become something of a high watermark in contemporary digital-music circles, and is among my favorite albums of the last 5-odd years - he most certainly does not disappoint with this opus...

photography & design: jon wozencroft

rosy parlane [nz]'s previous album for touch, 'iris' [2004] was hailed as a masterpiece by the red hot chilli peppers guitarist, john frusciante, who wrote: "...it’s such an incredible, beautiful energy inside of it that to me, it sounds like listening to a great pop record or a great rock record or a great classical record or whatever."

jim haynes in the wire wrote: "jon wozencroft's impeccable photography and design packages rosy parlane's 'iris' inside a predominantly blue package, inextricably linking the music to the emotional resonance of the colour... he flushes his soundfields with cascades of digital fragments which he separates into two distinct compositional categories. on the one hand, parlane stretches sounds from guitar, piano and organ into unrecognisable drones that swell into dense layerings, every once in a while coalescing into fluttering half-melodies. on the other, he emphasises the textural qualities of those digital fragments, simulating the natural acoustics of ice crackling from trees in winter or the gentle patter of rain on a windowsill. when fusing these together by placing the textures against the backdrop of the drone, parlane effectively builds pointillist sound environments with a profoundly human melancholia."

with 'jessamine', rosy develops these themes, and continues to incorporate new musical elements from unconventional as well as orchestral instrumentation. to him, everything is an instrument: from household objects to nature sounds, thus placing him firmly at the centre of the avant-garde. but it is the human element, as with all touch artists, which gives his work such a distinctive sound. ranging from ambient to noise, he gives full rein to textures of living; to start, languid and mournful; later harsh and assertive.

'jessamine' is a magnificent follow-up to a classic touch debut.

site-specific / field-recording-based collaboration between mattin & rosy parlane ; from their roost high up in the basque hillsides, the two worked in real time with environmental sounds, processing them via computer software into the 8 pieces on this disc. the results range from gorgeous/subtle bristling drone-work (foreshadowing rosy’s magnificent pair of albums on the touch label) to more hostile/rectified realizations (mattin’s doing, no doubt ...)

mattin / rosy parlane
medietan
w.m.o/r 05 cd deleted

between the 4th and 9th of october 2001 rosy parlane and myself went with laptop computers, microphones, digital camera, md and headphones to different mountains in different locations in the basque country. our aim was not to just document our trip but rather subtly to intervene with the surroundings, by improvising and interacting with the environment

mendietan is basque for ‘in the mountains’. this work begins in the basque mountains where mattin and rosy parlane rest their computers and microphones on sleeping bags and begin a private process of aural intervention and documentation. the processed sounds on mendietan are never performed ‘publicly’, confined to headphones and a minidisk recorder. they exist privately within the public space. what remains outside of the private sphere? the visual cue, ambiguous technical activity at a distance. without aural clues, a possible audience has no choice but to invent an agenda, actively misinterpret the scene.

the work continues when mattin presents a set of still images to four writers and asks them to perform the role of an active audience; to create/expose possible narratives in the work independently, without access to the sounds that were produced.

mendietan is realised in material form as a cd and photo/essay booklet. the link to the performance context has been severed and can only be constantly reinvented, based on the evidence of these multiple impressions. it is possible that mendietan is characterised by the calmness of the ‘environment’, and the ‘disruption’ of the intervention, but this assumes an original calmness/neutrality that is impossible to verify. only the physicality of the final product can be verified. the rest is a fiction, a creation out of nothing.

november 2009 release ; deluxe cd / dvd combo covering a series of performances given at the titular event in 2007 by a great selection of contemporary and historic sound artists & instrument builders :: akio suzuki, ernie althoff, bart hopkin, marcelempiricalbear (performing here with rosy parlane), phillip dadson, metal rouge’s helgayek koofassonaki, tom nunn, walter kitundu, adam willets, and more ...

phil dadson organized the event to showcase both the instruments themselves as well as the builders’ ability to perform / improvise on their own creations ... the event itself was laid out akin to derek bailey’s “company week” ; many of the participants partake in ad hoc groupings (including one intense pile-up w/ pretty much everyone involved) in addition to “demo’ing” their creations via soloshowcases” ...

luxury cd / dvd edition c/o the new zealand atoll label (same that released the fantastic douglas lilburn set - now sadly o/p although i’m hearing rumors of a mid-line reissue early in 2010) in a 6-panel digipak with a lovely matte 12-page booklet offering tons of close-ups of the instruments & players ... completely different tracklist / content for the cd & dvd, with almost 3 hours of self-built instrumental overload ...

highly recommended !!!
atoll press release...

s3d (ear & eye) presented a world of fresh sonics from new and unexpected sources with names as idiosyncratic and offbeat as the players and their inventions; analopos, blue, mothics, shimsaw, zitherum, gloopspring, crustacean, savart's wheel . . & the list goes on.

seven innovators in their field of experimental musical instrument building and performance travelled to auckland to join with 5 local practitioners for three packed days of public workshops and performances, where acoustical, physical, electronic and virtual worlds came together in a unique chemistry.

akio suzuki (japan), bart hopkin, yek koo (helga fassonaki), tom nunn (usa), walter kitundu (tanzania / us), graeme leak, ernie althoff (australia), with marcel bear, sam morrison, james mccarthy, adam willetts & phil dadson (new zealand).

s3d has its genesis in rev, a 5 day worlds-first festival, celebrating musical instrument invention and performance at the power house in brisbane in 2003, where international contributors bart hopkins (usa), david toop, scanner (uk) & phil dadson (nz) were invited to join with local artists for a week of performances, seminars, exhibitions and installations. s3d differs by focussing on builder/performers with improvising skills to work solo and collaboratively through the three days of sonic exploration.

s3d celebrates the magic of the new and unexpected with musical instruments and sounds that blur boundaries between art and music.
