hägring (cd) 2004 antifrost |afro 2028|

released: december 2004

hägring is the third and final part in the hypnagogic trilogy that started with sleepwalk and morphei which is based upon a fascination for wake dreaming, auditory hallucinations and the memory of sound.

composed using delicate field recordings, computer processed sounds, vibrating piano and guitar strings to create a sensitive dreamlike state. or was it just a mirage?

all mirages emergedduring 03-04 in malmö, sweden

bonbon tapes (norway) #bbc 01 cs

bad kharma96-98” quadruple cassette set

  • kaibatsuri (1996-1997) / salt (1997)

  • tape werk (1997-1998)

  • krshna (1998)

  • kriyayoga (1998)
... hot on the heels of lasse marhaug’s investigation of his 90s cassette-era work comes this set from cohort/co-conspirator bad kharma (aka rsundin or simply ronnie sundin - yes, the “author” of that fantastic “history of electronic music” book on häpna) ...

four tapes in a lovely thomas ekelund-designed (ekelund is also responsible for the look/feel of the kevin drumm “purge” tape) blister-box covering sundin’s harsh noise exploits in those waning, just pre-internet salad days of noise/cassette culture - especially relevant given the current noise/cassette renaissance ...
bonbon tapes press release...

bad kharma 96-98 4 tape box

four and a half hours of material recorded in the years 1996-1998 by that old swedish project bad kharma. only 50 copies available.

the contents:

kaibatsuri (1996-1997) / salt (1997) c90

kaibatsuri is a collection of early noise experiments and tape loop sessions recorded in the early days in umeå and at the cabin. salt was intended to be released as the first lp but was shelved and later reworked and expanded to become the seltin cd instead. lots of feedback and contact mike action.

tape werk (1997-1998) c60

collage style noise album that was originally recorded in 1997 in umeå and later on remixed in trondheim in 1998. first album to be recorded on dat. contact mike excercises, samples, tapes, synth and fx.

krshna (1998) c60

a pretty intense collage noise album all recorded and edited in one day. synth, guitar, feedback, samples and tapes.

kriyayoga (1998) c60

fang bomb (sweden) #fb 0002 ep

dead letters spell out dead words / ronnie sundinfuglesang, astronaut” seven inch single record

  • dead letters spell out dead words - born to go (6:14)
  • ronnie sundin - space is the place (in space nobody can hear your demons mix) (6:30)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "born to go / space is the place"
2nd release on this new swedish label; a split between ideal label artist dead letters spell out dead words and contemporary sound-artist/noise-smith ronnie “r.” sundin (releases on häpna, etc...) two white-hot blasts of space-sound; coming from the bedroom-psych psyche (dlsodw) and a more abstract digital/concrète parallel...
fang bomb press release...
released december 7:th, 2006:

dead letters spell out dead words / ronnie sundin
fuglesang, astronaut
7" vinyl
fb002

european space agency (esa) astronaut christer fuglesang is part of mission sts-116, known to be the most complex construction flight yet attempted. fuglesang is the first swedish astronaut and will, according to recent calculations, be the 1000th person to leave earth.

after departing on the space shuttle discovery and docking with the international space station (iss), fuglesang will perform two spacewalks, the main purpose of which is to purpose to rewire the iss. the space stations current electrical system, designed to support the space station during the assembly phase, will be rebuilt and upgraded to support the attachment of new research modules. this, and the delivery of a new solar array system executed by mission sts-115, readies nasa to activate the permanent cooling and power systems of the iss.

now... this is worth celebrating, and celebrate we do by releasing this seven inch artifact, proven to carry compositions by two of the most interesting artists around at the moment, international drone pop superstar dead letters spell out dead words and minimalist master ronnie sundin.

häpna (sweden) #h.07 cd

ronnie sundinmorphei” compact disc

  • morphei
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "morphei"
as far as i can tell, this was the first cd release from swedish computer/sound-artist ronnie sundin (who you may have seen credited here & there in the noise community as rsundin.)
häpna press release...
morphei is a soundtrack to a dream. a nighty-night record designed to make you wake up and listen! inspired by that in between state of wake and dreaming, when you’re not quite sure whether you’re asleep or not, this record presents a stream of realities seamlessly floating into each other, layers of events of acoustic and digital nature mingle; hear the light-switch singing a duet with the feedback-mixer, traces of scandinavian wildlife intertwine with a tropical forest of digital insects, or hear the timestretched teaspoon having a conversation with the snow-balls of thonk... you get the picture.

ronnie sundin (b.1973) is trained in visual art at the academy of fine arts in umeå, sweden and mostly works with sound or soundrelated matters in a borderland between the art-scene and the music-scene. in 2001 he participated in the critically acclaimed invalidobject-series that was released by the cross-media publishers fällt based in northen ireland and he also released a cd on the californian ground fault recordings.

kissy (usa) #kis 013 cd

ronnie sundinstandard” three inch compact disc recordable

  • standards
this is the sort of explication i love to read (below). this release finds mr. rsundin in a slightly different mode than in evidence on his häpna-label disc...
kissy press release...
in a message dated monday november 24, 2003 from ronnie sundin to kissy records:
"i'm sick of writing bios so i can't really come up with any good info for you right now, can't you just make something up.. ;-)

about the piece: this actually happened almost by accident when i was doing some spring cleaning of my hard drive, cleaning out sounds i didn't know what to do with and just placing all of them  in one folder. after that, without much thought i just pieced them all together into one long file just to see what would happen, if they could work together. it seemed to me like they did so i did some minimal editing and added some field recordings until it seemed to reach completion. or just about.
best, ronnie"

click the play button to hear an excerpt of "skinpeel"
debut release on lasse marhaug’s new label pica disk; a quadruple-disc box set compiling his 90s cassette-only releases, including collaborations with macronympha, ronnie sundin, grunt, mads staff jensen, frederic minrouze, and lars skoglund.

includes liner notes by tommy carlsson (“you know these discs would make a killer tape box”) and tore honore bøe (“about 13,900 for marhaug+loves+cassettes - about 782 for marhaug+hates+cassettes”) packed inside a 24-page booklet with copious tape-art, photos of lasse (with hair!), and an annotated list of contents.

this set offers a veritable one-man history of norwegian noise music in the waning days of cassette culture, as potent a document as imaginable. essential listening for the noise-music afficionado.
pica disk press release...
lasse marhaug: tapes 1990-1999

pica001. 4 cd box-set, with silver print and 24 page booklet. released summer 2007.

lasse marhaug released between 60 to 70 cassette tapes in the 90-ies. these tapes were released in limited quantities in the noise/metal underground and have been unavailable for years, so for many this will be the first time to hear this music. from the early cut-up voice and turntable experiments, to the later full-on wall-of-sound scrap metal noise. mostly solo work (none of marhaug's work with origami replika is represented), but there's also collaboration tracks with artists like macronympha, grunt and bad kharma.

all tracks selected by marhaug himself, after carefully going through and digitally transfering all of his cassettes from the period, and remastered by tommi keränen.

packaged in a handsome custom-made box which comes with a 24 page booklet of photos, cover reproductions and liner-notes by tommy carlsson (abisko, segerhuva) and tore honore bøe (origami republika, the nordic miracle); both old friends of lasse and long-time champions of the cassette format.

when i listen to the four discs in this box, it strikes me that there is so much of lasse's solo recordings that i have yet to hear. this box definitely fills a huge hole in my collection. lasse is a talented lad, and his creativity is very often put to good use in various collaborative works, and a large number of constellations. however, i am most fond of his solo recordings. maybe you will be too, after having indulged in this avalanche of 1990’s marhaug recordings. a retrospective showing quite clearly how lasse has chosen his path, and how he merrily skips along said path. finding his own method of expression, his own language. free in mind, free from dogma, free from self-imposed limitations.

- (from tommy carlsson's liner notes)

the sound projector (uk) #tsp 13 mag

the sound projector 13th issue 2005” magazine

  • articles & interviews with those mentioned below
  • hundreds of record reviews
slow boat arrived carrying reinforcements of this very popular (well, amidst mms customers anyways) magazine/mission-stat(e)ment

completely out-doing himself with the “2005” edition, mr. pinsent herein breaks mold by including a column entitled “the chartists” which covers everything from the bryan adams/mel c collaboration to kylie/destiny’s child/puffy amiyumi, which then descends into a full-length article on the monkees followed by a length breakdown on the reissued “smile”. unreal.

by far my favorite contemporary music magazine, long may its spirit soar...
the sound projector press release...
the lamenting octopus bears illustrious intelligence of elation. the sound projector thirteenth issue. lavish musical artefacts pouring from the horn of plenty. can tomorrow be more than the end of today?

published january 2005 - 170pp, fully indexed, digital printing, life-enhancing qualities embedded into each page.

interesting interviews with musical folk: my cat is an alien outer-space guitar duo from turin, italy. the vitamin b12 mysterious art music project based in brighton uk. rhodri davies classically trained welsh harpist, pioneer of quiet improvisation. ronnie sundin ultra-quiet electronicist from sweden. edward ruchalski very idiosyncratic and isolationist approach. leap-seconds duo of uk minimalist players. murmer from experimental theatre to field recording assemblage records.

words! fear! grapes! hairiness! reindeer! flight! myths!

the usual full-to-capacity record review sections include: in a substantial pop music feature by harley richardson and friends, 1990s hit singles are analysed in 'the chartists', the monkees are celebrated, brian wilson’s smile is reappraised yet again! - lovely screeching dense racket in atoms of pure noise - satanic heavy metal from norway and other nordic lands in black metal - electronic and laptop music - dull droning monotony - amplifier humming and process din - environmental recordings and derivatives - modern composers and installation music - japanese rock, pop, avant and electronic music - substantial merzbow reviews and portrait - more releases from those uk anti-art merchants the new blockaders - crazy usa underground guitar bands, noise, folksters, experimenters, and droners - an amazing fred lane record reissue - the amplify 02 box set - inaudible electronic music + inaudible improvised music - great guitar and heavy beat noise rock - electroacoustic and tape manipulation - an exploration of worlds of the strange and bizarre in the utter freakdom
