crouton (usa) #crouton 24 cd

richard chartierarchival 1991” compact disc

  • archival 1991 (46:35)
crouton press release...
crouton no.24
richard chartier
"archival 1991"
cd

richard chartier is a designer, an artist, and perhaps, a neat freak. throughout his recent work, chartier has continued to present sound as design - clean, simple design, implying colors and direct lines and shapes; a spotless, modern room; a series of colored screens. his release on crouton predates this taste, when things were a bit more complex, a bit more intense. and as his recent work sucks the listener into white space, archival1991 takes you straight into a black hole, in the most comfortable way imaginable. this is a different kind of clean simplicity. the work is beautiful, stunning, and most of all, complexly powerful. the recording is based on two compositions from 1991, using analog and digital synthesizers. in 2003, these original pieces were used as source material for this new work, resulting in an extremely intriguing revisit, and aesthetically true to much of his work from the same period.

richard chartier (b.1971), minimal sound/installation artist and graphic designer, has produced critically acclaimed solo recordings for labels including trente oiseaux (germany), line (usa), meme (japan), and fallt (ireland), as well collaborative works with nosei sakata (*0),taylor deupree, and kim cascone on 12k (usa) and has appeared on numerous international compilations. his minimalist work explores the relationship between sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening. awarded one of twelve honorable mentions in the category of digital music by the prestigious prix ars electronica, 2001 (austria), chartier's cd s e r i e s, was featured in the whitney biennial 2002 exhibit at the whitney museum of american art (ny).

richard chartier/boca raton - kapotte muziek by...
korm plastics kp 3019
full length cd

the thirteenth installment in this series is the first full length cd in this series, being a split by richard chartier and boca raton. their approaches to sound are similar, so it would be a good idea to combine them on a split release.

richard chartier (b.1971),
sound/installation artist and graphic designer, has created critically acclaimed recordings for labels such as 12k/line (usa), trente oiseaux (germany), spekk (japan), mutek_rec (canada), and fallt (ireland), including collaborations with artists taylor deupree, william basinski, coh, and *0 and has appeared on numerous international compilations. his digital minimalist work explores the inter- relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening.

chartier's sound works and sound installations have been presented internationally including at the exhibits sounding spaces at icc (tokyo, japan), i moderni / the moderns at castello di rivoli (torino, italy), 2002 biennial at the whitney museum of american art (ny), resynthesis at the art institute of chicago and with the travelling sound exhibit invisible cities created by digital media curators fehler as well as solo and collaborative installations for fusebox (dc) and diapason (ny). he has performed his work live across europe, japan, and north america at mutek (montreal, canada), deaf (dublin, ireland), observatori (valencia, spain), transmediale (berlin, germany), lovebytes (sheffield, uk), the leeds international film festival (leeds,uk), the rotterdam international film festival (ne), garage (stralsund, germany) and other noted digital art/music festivals and at exhibits such as frequenzen [hz] at the schirn kunsthalle (frankfurt) and a minimal future? art as object 1958-1968 at the museum of contemporary art (los angeles). the conceptual performance piece chessmachine, a multimedia collaborative work by chartier, ivan pavlov and video/installation artists evelyn domnitch and dmitry gelfand recently premiered at the opening event of the 2004 mutek festival.

in 2000 he formed the recording label line and has since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by international sound artists and composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism. the premiere release on line, chartier's series as awarded honorable mention in the category of digital music by the prestigious prix ars electronica, 2001 (austria).

boca raton is an ongoing musical project started by martijn tellinga (1974, amsterdam, netherlands) in 1999. it hovers at the edges of synthesized and concrete-acoustic soundworlds. the abstraction, or rather reflection, of concrete sources through electronic synthesis and manipulation creates an alias in sound which shares the associative and narrative character of the everyday soundtrack that surrounds us. by using elements of both worlds, its musical form shows the integration and co-existence of natural - unstaged - sound and its artificially created reflection.

more than relying on melody, harmony and rhythm, these soundworks are constructed from the fundamental building blocks of music: texture, volume and time-elapse. a composition is made by arranging and re- arranging elements, magnifying their charac-teristics, outlinening tendency and by emphasizing the intrinsic value of the material. as well as displaying an autonomously excisting sonic object, these environments are as much a carrier for the compositional form and musical gesture.

the first solo-works of martijn tellinga have recently been commisioned by labels such as spekk - (japan) and absurd - (greek). since september 2003, he has been studying sonology at the royal conservatory the hague, netherlands. in 1999 he started the platform for contemporary electro-acoustic music stichting mixer, having organised numerous events and released over 25 titles today.

camera lucida
line_030 dvd

line is proud to announce the release of its first dvd, camera lucida. the project by russian/american installation and video artists, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand and developed in collaboration with scientific laboratories in japan, germany, russia and belgium.

camera lucida (chamber of light or lucidity) is a 3-dimensional sonic observatory that directly transforms sound into light by employing a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence: ultrasound, propagating within a liquid, triggers the formation and implosion of micro-bubbles that reach temperatures as high as are found on the sun, and emit light in the shape of sound waves. the authors of the installation, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand, joined forces with multiple sound artists to create the sonochemical compositions presented on this dvd.

this dvd also contains a data partition with uncompressed high resolution audio files of all the works.

evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand create sensory immersion environments that merge physics, chemistry and computer science with uncanny philosophical practices. having dismissed all forms of fixative and recording media, domnitch and gelfand's installations exist as ever-transforming phenomena offered for observation. because these rarely seen manifestations take place directly in front of the observer without being distorted and flattened onto a screen, they often serve to vastly extend the observer's sensory envelope.

their works have been exhibited worldwide, including shows at v2 institute for unstable media (rotterdam, netherlands), nijo castle (kyoto, japan), museum of dreams (st. petersburg, russia), i-20 gallery (new york, usa), die schachtel (milan, italy) and tesla (berlin, germany).

"camera lucida is a highly introspective immersive spatial art work creating a fleeting ephemeral materiality by intersecting ultrasound with hyperlight... in essence the creation of a sonic aurora. domnitch and gelfand's piece rejects any possibility to be fixed in space and time, but rather offers up the very definition of an unstable work of art, existing entirely for and within the perceptive realm of the viewer." - stephen kovats, director of transmediale 2008

due to the detailed and subtle visual nature of this work and phenomenon the artists have chosen to use pal over ntsc encoding to maintain the maximum resolution possible for the movie and sound files. this dvd is region free and can be played on any computer dvd drive. no region switching is necessary for television screen viewing, it can only playback on a pal or multi-system dvd player. playback in a darkened space with monitor brightness turned up is encouraged.

raster-noton (germany) #r-n075 cd

richard chartierincidence” compact disc

  • incidence (64:00)
raster-noton press release...
richard chartier. incidence

after several releases by artists of the collective around raster-noton on american label line, a long-outstanding invitation was issued into the opposite direction. so last but not least the present release is an expression of long-lasting artistic ties between both labels.

in the greyness heavy waves begin to glide into the one-hour work. they swell and flood a vacuum. chartier is able to intensify this maelstrom in long and graceful moves. in a majestic and subtle manner he creates a subsonic vastness, capturing the listener, disconnecting him from the irrelevant reality. the end mirrors the beginning - revealing the idea of an endless space in an endless composition. finally incidence is a sound stream seeking to transform time into a certain timelessness.

richard chartier runs the label line, following the traditions of trente oiseaux by focusing on minimalist and not beat-oriented sound experiments. his compositions often test the limits of auditory perceptibility. in this way chartier concentrates on tiniest changes within seemingly static sound masses.

alva noto. transvision

this release is the second part of the transall cycle. transall approaches with the problematics of speed, the vision of utopia and the dissolution of our ideas into fragments.

alva noto a.k.a. carsten nicolai states:

... speed of data-flow is equivalent to the speed of our time. in an era when virtual products of our ideas are expanding, we are simultaneously positioning a calm point in which to settle ourselves.text, image, vector graphic - storage files, were translated into raw audio data as the source material from which constellations of diffused sound start to form. special emphasis is put on the rhythmic aspect of the digitalised and rasterised data. the tools of their transformation reveal themselves by the structure of the recordings.by the restricting itself to simple and transparent mechanisms, this process becomes independent from existing standards and gains autonomy. ...

ulf poschardt (d) was approached to accompany the cd with a sleeve note, in regard to the content of the release. the text hopefully allows the audience a wider insight into the themes behind the recordings.

sound323 press release...
blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum.

book + dvd.
editors: brian marley and mark wastell.
published by sound 323.
341 printed pages - full colour. hardback.
publishing date - 1st january 2006

what is the most significant development that has occurred in adventurous music during the last decade? it's arguably neither a technique-driven development nor a technological one. rather, it's how we, musicians and audience alike, have opened our ears to the world and embraced its sounds as both a musical resource and as music itself. blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum explores the work and aesthetic of various cutting edge musicians, environmental/sound artists and noise-makers.

as well as profiles of richard chartier, the necks, john wall and sachiko m, the book contains explorations of the history and changing nature of free improvisation, of cage's iconoclastic 4'33", and of where to draw the line (somewhat tentatively, to be sure) between improvisation and composition.

there is, in addition, a series of personal statements by almost two dozen musicians, composers and sound artists, collected by rhodri davies; and in out in the field bertrand denzler and jean-luc guionnet interview improvisers about their music and group the anonymised answers thematically. the authors of the principal chapters - david toop, clive bell, brian marley, dan warburton, andy hamilton and will montgomery - are well-known and respected writers on music/sound. machines, noise and improvisation are factors common to all of the chapters in the book. david reid's dvd selection of video performances also carries this theme. the performances, all filmed during the last five years and part of his growing archive, represent a diverse range of musicians and their musics.

note, however, that the dvd content is neither illustrative of nor subordinate to the written material in the book; it comprises a chapter in its own right.

a feature of blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum that will be much remarked upon is damien beaton's lavish design, which makes the book so much more than a mere receptacle for words.
