sakadanever give up on the margins of logic” three inch compact disc

  • never give up on the margins of logic (17:33)
the first widely available recording (following a few i still haven’t seen on mattin’s w.m.o/r label) from this electro-acoustic freely improvising ensemble co-led by computer-musician mattin and (former?) amm percussionist eddie prévost; a transcription of a live-set (excerpt?) from the freedom of the city festival on may 3rd, 2003.

the 17.5 minutes go by in a whir of bowed cymbal harmonics, 12k sine tones, scrabbly contact-mic’ed elements, and the occasional guttural wail of a low-strung double bass. a highly succesful mix of chance elements referencing the history of live electronic music from david tudor’s first experiments in the 60s through richard teitlebaum’s synth-processing getup of the early 80s right on through contemporary computer-based algorithms...

sakada
rhodri davies: harp
eddie prévost: percussion
mattin: computer feedback
margarida garcia: double bass
mark wastell: amplified textures

“for london's freedom of the city festival mattin's sakada materializes in a big band incarnation. unexpectedly, the larger the group, the smaller the sound. in contrast to sakada's dense previous recordings as the trio of mattin, prévost and rosy parlane, here the expanded sakada navigate a more restrained and open territory. droning passages rise and ebb in blocks, the sound folding over on itself, while minute textures dance on the edges. the emphasis on bowed sounds (prévost's cymbals, davies' harp, garcia's bass, wastell's objects and mattin's computer casing (!!!)) brings to mind the slow churning of a morton feldman composition, yet mutated further into the realm of the unexpected and abstract. this recording finds a group as attuned to the space in between as they are to each other. an intense document of precisely restrained improvisation.”

dennis mcnulty

in september 2006 a welshman, rhodri davies, travelled to ireland to play harp with two irishmen, david lacey (percussion and electronics) and dennis mcnulty (computer). the trio recorded in st patrick's church in dalkey, just south of dublin as children played in the school playground next door and roadworkers went about their business along the road.

poor trade, the resulting cd is a rich, colourful swell of detailed improvisation captured in the moment by the skilled microphone of david reid. sensually brooding in places, gloriously alive in others this is passionate, joyous music.

richard llewellyn, owen martell, simon proffitt: real-time sampling and processing
rhodri davies: harp, electronics, accelerometer

recorded in cardiff, wales, july 12, 2005
released in 2006

the cardiff-based trio of improvising laptoppers, traw, have only one previous recording to their name, congratulations to the young men of nelson, issued as part of fourier transform's white box cd-r series in a one-off edition of 50 copies. having thus satisfactorily introduced themselves to adventurous music lovers worldwide, they now follow up congratulations with an even more expansive project, cwymp y dwr ar ganol dydd, on which they are joined by their fellow countryman rhodri davies. a celebrated harpist perhaps best known for his work in free improvisation, davies also commissions and performs works by contemporary composers such as james saunders, catherine kontz, michael parsons and carole finer, as well as fluxus artists yasunao tone and mieko shiomi, and he’s an occasional member of anton lukoszevieze’s new music ensemble apartment house.

in making cwymp y dwr ar ganol dydd, each member of traw took away a selection of davies’ harp + electronics material (recorded by michael sansom at surrey university) and processed them according to his own lights. in july 2005, when the group reconvened in the company of davies, they improvised with this de- or re-personalised material to make new sound configurations. davies too was improvising, in this case with his own transmogrified self, and a live feed of his playing was also available to traw for further manipulation. it’s as though davies had stepped into a sonic hall of mirrors.

traw is a welsh word meaning pitch, or, in a more poetic sense, diapason, a wholeness, an encompassing. the cd title translates as the water falls at morning’s end, and all of the track titles are water-related, named after rivers or waterfalls around the pontneddfechan/ystradfellte area of south wales. but there’s more to it than that: "mellte", a river, also refers to lightning, and "einion gam", the name of a waterfall, means crooked anvil.

on cwymp y dwr ar ganol dydd, the music is subjected to elemental fire, forged, and doused with water to toughen it up. but forge also means ‘to fake’, and that too is appropriate: a gloriously fake rhodri davies is presented in this recording.

blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum.

book + dvd.
editors: brian marley and mark wastell.
published by sound 323.
341 printed pages - full colour. hardback.
publishing date - 1st january 2006

what is the most significant development that has occurred in adventurous music during the last decade? it's arguably neither a technique-driven development nor a technological one. rather, it's how we, musicians and audience alike, have opened our ears to the world and embraced its sounds as both a musical resource and as music itself. blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum explores the work and aesthetic of various cutting edge musicians, environmental/sound artists and noise-makers.

as well as profiles of richard chartier, the necks, john wall and sachiko m, the book contains explorations of the history and changing nature of free improvisation, of cage's iconoclastic 4'33", and of where to draw the line (somewhat tentatively, to be sure) between improvisation and composition.

there is, in addition, a series of personal statements by almost two dozen musicians, composers and sound artists, collected by rhodri davies; and in out in the field bertrand denzler and jean-luc guionnet interview improvisers about their music and group the anonymised answers thematically. the authors of the principal chapters - david toop, clive bell, brian marley, dan warburton, andy hamilton and will montgomery - are well-known and respected writers on music/sound. machines, noise and improvisation are factors common to all of the chapters in the book. david reid's dvd selection of video performances also carries this theme. the performances, all filmed during the last five years and part of his growing archive, represent a diverse range of musicians and their musics.

note, however, that the dvd content is neither illustrative of nor subordinate to the written material in the book; it comprises a chapter in its own right.

a feature of blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum that will be much remarked upon is damien beaton's lavish design, which makes the book so much more than a mere receptacle for words.

the sound projector (uk) #tsp 13 mag

the sound projector 13th issue 2005” magazine

slow boat arrived carrying reinforcements of this very popular (well, amidst mms customers anyways) magazine/mission-stat(e)ment

completely out-doing himself with the “2005” edition, mr. pinsent herein breaks mold by including a column entitled “the chartists” which covers everything from the bryan adams/mel c collaboration to kylie/destiny’s child/puffy amiyumi, which then descends into a full-length article on the monkees followed by a length breakdown on the reissued “smile”. unreal.

by far my favorite contemporary music magazine, long may its spirit soar...
