alan courtisunstringed guitar & cymbals” compact disc

  • cardamomo (16:17)
  • coriandro (12:21)
  • fenogreco (15:25)
may 2008 release ; always space on the shelf for another sound-art disc by alan “anla” courtis, here working his magic on, you guessed it, an unstringed electric guitar (essentially a “feedback machine”) &errant cymbals ...

what results is a good 45 minutes of ghostly reverbed-out feedback warble & the intermittent pulse of what sounds like a cymbal being played by a fan ... if there’s one thing i love about courtis, it’s his ability to conjure up precise atmospheres using simple tools ; this one’s pure bottom-of-the-well ... excellent.

locust press release...
the primordial psychedelic sounds of argentina’s reynols continue the met life series with the raw, rhythmically entrancing field recordings of city workers in buenos aires drilling a hole into a busy city street. the natural response by this mysterious quartet doesn’t drill so much as gleefully massage the head with a monumental freakout of onomatopoeia and uber-intonation commandeered by the band’s lead vocalist miguel tomasin with the accompaniment of some seriously spaced-out delay driven tribal percussion, bellowing horn, piano plod and guitar plunder.

jazkamer: failed state of mind

pica024. cd. released october 2010.

"failed state of mind" is jazkamer's 25th studio album. most people know of the infamous "that difficult 25th album", but for jazkamer the landmark number appears to have given no difficulties, as "failed state of mind" is the most mellow and easy-on-the-ears recording jazkamer since 2006's "panic".

the nine tracks that makes up the album is a drifting tapestry of droning guitars, distant location recordings and tasteful percussion work, all woven together in a seamless stream that is subtle and abstract. melody is hinted at, but never achieved, buried beneath layers of sound. one could almost thing that jazkamer is getting mellow in their older years. what sticks in the ear is the clarity with which jazkamer shifts between different swathes and bandwidths of noise. from moment to moment what you catch feels like a pinball machine, a child's electronic toy, a rasping insect, a fax, or simply the abstract whirr of sonic information; all caught up in an articulate but pressured streamline.

"fail state of mind" is a pure and profound release that sticks a new definition to naturalism. argentinian sound-wizard anla courtis contributes with guitar-work on two tracks. cover by san francisco-based photographer and artist suzy poling.

killer disc of lo-fi tape music & electronic studies from reynols’ anla courtis; completely all over the map, from the electric-guitar based musique concrète of “asma de tía de alga” to the almost pietro-grossi-esque bleep-fest of “invisible clown sonata” (what a title!) to the epic closer “encías de viento.” highly recommended.

anla courtis
tape works

anla courtis continues to produce music and was even quite prolific during his time in reynols. it goes without saying that courtis learned a thing or two from his experience in reynols; and there's a fundamental constant to all of his work: the cassette. one of reynols' most infamous albums blank tapes was pieced together from the endemic hiss from, you guessed it, blank tapes. far from being an empty album of silences, blank tapes is extraordinarily dynamic, amplifying the magnetic energy of the tape hiss into undulating fluctuations that mirror the somatic patterns of the human body. reynols' tapes have a heart beat, blood pumping through their veins, and oxygen rushing through their lungs.

this crudely built anthropomorphism continues in courtis' work today, as the cassette and the tape deck remain primary tools in his compositional sensibility. courtis himself explains: "well to be honest for many years the cassette was the only medium i had to record music. maybe this is because argentina is always a bit behind in technology, or because i was never interested in having "the new thing." it might sound ridiculous but mainly my overdubbing work until now has been basically in a portastudio. maybe, this is just an old friend i don't think is necessary to leave; but on the other hand, there is a lot you can do with 4 channels... i mean there is no sense to discard old technology because you have a new one. a pen is technology; you don't need to kill the pen because now you have a mouse! in fact there are some things you can do with my old reel-to-reel that you cannot do with a disk drive, i mean pushing the tape, changing the aleatory speed... there are a bunch of unpredictable irregular things you can do with this old machine. in this sense, i think we should find a way to make different technologies live somehow together."

it is in this context that anla courtis presents tape works, a collection of material that dates back to the early '90s. here, courtis splatters dense slabs of petrified tones with spasmodic algorithms, dissembodied vocal samples that spiral into a electric chorale, and hot-wired musique concrete techniques, all buried under the weight of the mighty distortion pedal. once again, all things are possible for anla courtis.

- jim haynes (from the liner notes)

...

talking about a tape-works record in the 90s might sound rather anachronistic but, be it because of argentinas technology lag or for some other mysterious reason, i did not get hold of a computer to work with sound until 1999. thats why the sound experiments ive worked on throughout the last decade are mainly tape explorations. this cd contains a selection of re-mastered tape-works dating from the period 1991-1998. anla courtis

qpop mc046
cassette c60 in o-box
limited edition 100
total time: approximately 60 min.

this is the old-fashioned a bit, but lovely a lot tape-release. it based mostly on recordings made by lasse marhaug and anla courtis together in 1998, but remains unreleased for now. two additional solo pieces (last tracks on each side of the cassette) were recorded in 2007 to complete the entire project. as a result, now we have plenty of taped dark fluctuations of the low drones, some heavy processed location recordings & minimal organic noises.

jordslev hojaldre released on chrome tape and each cassette recorded on hi-quality cassette deck using dolby b noise reduction system.

sedimental (usa) #sed 024 lp

reynolswhistling kettle quartet” long playing record

  • i andante mogal
  • 22 moderato uno surido fermo
  • iii allegro repuliom lanidelo
sedimental press release...
a singularly brilliant work for baritone, tenor, contralto & soprano whistling kettles from this unpredictable argentinian collective reynols seems to be more active than ever. responsible for a bunch of highly conceptual projects such as the “10.000-chicken symphony”, “blantapes”, “fire music”, “reynols plays the eiffel tower”, etc. this sound-art piece redefines a traditional format in classical music the quartet in order to expand its boundaries and possibilities. through the three movements of this composition (andante mogal, moderato uno surido fermo and allegro repuliom lanidelo), the sound of the four whistling kettles create deep textures, ranging from minimal static drones to complex pitch counterpoints. if the string quartet has, for centuries, been a must for composers, what can we expect from the coming xxi century quartets? maybe this release starts eying in key an answer …

reynols started its activities in 1993 in argentina. since that date the work of the band has been basically oriented to improvisation, droning and deep experimental research, etc., employing diverse acoustic & electric instruments and no-instruments, tapes and electronics. the group integrates an amazing musician who suffers from down's syndrome, miguel tomas n, who plays drums, vocals and diverse instruments. the fact that reynols integrates a handicapped member is not casual, actually the band s forrays into musical experimentation are guided by the inmense freedom of tomas n s mind, giving a challenging and unique character to this project. the line-up is completed with robeto conlazo & anla courtis, who play electric guitars and many other instruments.

in 1995 reynols released the first dematerialized cd called "gordura vegetal hidrogenada". in 1996 they started releasing stuff outside their country. at the moment the band has more than 80 releases in europe, usa, new zealand and japan. during the years the band s activities has included: concerts for plants, tributes to dry ice, psychic energy refractions with toothbrushes, noise performances in public squares, etc. the band also has manofacturated selfdesigned electric guitars and other electric instruments.

during 1999 reynols has been involved in several collaborations projects with the acclaimed american composer pauline oliveros. the band remixed oliveros s live stuff in a cd called "pauline oliveros in the arms of reynols" and played an internet concert with her in 1999. in august 2000 oliveros & reynols played together some concerts in usa including a performance at the lincoln center on her "lunar opera" that was the begining of the reynols usa tour 2000. reynols also played with oliveros at the deep listening space during ocober 2001.

during the 2001 usa tour the band presented their new homemade intruments called electric pacalirtes in more than twenty cities and played them at the no music festival with musicians like lee ranaldo, alan licht, john oswald, michael snow, paul dutton and members of the nihilist spasm band.

anla courtistribute to calcium” seven inch single record

  • part 1 (6:20)

  • part 2 (6:20)
whoah... super-demonized psychedelic scrape-throb from the “musical director” of reynols, anla courtis (recently seen in tandem with lasse marhaug on the antifrost label, culver on riot season, and makoto kawabata on one of the 10k labels that releases amt-related solo projects), coming off the mutant half-brother of tony conrad & faust’s “the pyre of angus was in kathmandu/the death of the composer was in 1962” played at 16rpm...

wasn’t quite prepared for the quality of sound here (i’ve never been the biggest reynols fan) but this smokes. guitars chime in only the lowest, dirtiest fasion, the toba violin (apparently: a one-stringed instrument constructed for centuries by native argentinians) occupies the upper registers; somewhere off in the distance someone is singing backwards in sanskrit. both older than time itself and yet-to-be-born. massive...
tonschacht press release...
artist: anla courtis
title: tribute to calcium
format: 7"
cat #: tons019

"these are the first pieces i've ever recorded with the toba violin. i was delighted by the raw sound of this native instrument and my aim was to explore its possiblities beyond the traditional approach, that's why i decided to combine it with layers of electric guitar. the recording documents this exploration process and maybe keeps fresh the spirit of this first encounter." (anla courtis)

"sprung from the bowels of reynols, guitarist anla courtis has produced an incredible melange of guitar, toba violin and tape music called tribute to calcium. the sounds roll on like ducks down a cement mountain.squeedles of upper register amp noise curl along the edge of clouds on one side, the other is more low-down - like elephants on the killing floor. it's a really great record, and probably the manifestation of a new sort of guitar sound.”

a. courtis: electric guitar, toba violin & tapes

recorded at ornitivo studios, buenos aires, argentina somewhen in 2003.

thanks to wolfgang & tonschacht, pauline oliveros, damo suzuki, flia. courtis and the tobas.
