december 2011 release ; finally in stock, this massive recording by an ensemble put together by eli keszler to perform alongside his “cold pin” installation at the bca cyclorama, involving some of (then) boston’s best & brightest :: reuben son, greg kelley, geoff mullen, benny nelson ... and of course ashley paul & eli himself ...

... this is a rarely attempted hedging of an in-situ sound installation (several “long strings” were run up & down the cyclorama’s walls in interlocking, geometric patterns, excited by arduino-controlled triggers) with a scored, but largely performer-interpreted (read : improvised) ensemble dynamic that does a great job at putting virtually all of eli’s conceptual eggs into a single basket ... the result is an intense pile-up of held tones cut to the installation’s sporadic low-end growl & eli’s razor-sharp snare attacks that harkens simultaneously to dozens of specific reference points (art-world takes like remko scha’s “machine guitars” & paul panhuysen’s room-length string performances on one side ... the industrial-leaning, collectively improvised, atonal morasses of biota / mnemonists, morphogenesis, scratch orchestra on the other) ; all while retaining a fairly unique approach that doesn’t necessarily lock down the aesthetics at play here into either camp ...

an incredible record that rates as of the best things i’ve heard all year ... highly recommended !!!

eli keszler 'cold pin' (pan 21)

over two years in the making, cold pin is the new full length record by eli keszler. both a composition and stand alone installation, 14 strings ranging in length from 25 to 3 feet are strung across a 15 x 40 curved wall, with motors attacking the strings, connected by micro-controllers, pick-ups and rca cables. recorded in boston's historic cyclorama, a massive dome built to house the cyclorama of the battle of gettysburg painting in 1884. the b side features in addition, a 'dry' version of the installation with motor attacks on metal squares rather then strings, creating dense percussive clusters. cold pin works within the frame work of left to right time and vertical structure. the installation acts as the architecture of the music, surrounding and immersing the live instruments into incredible density and sharp angular mass shapes, and functions alone as the performers stop. rather than an individual sound the sustained horns, strings, drums and metallic attacks function as a singular unit, and continue too when they stop alongside the installation. cold pin features eli keszler (drums, crotales installation and guitar), geoff mullen (guitar), ashley paul (clarinet, guitar, greenbox) greg kelley (trumpet), reuben son (bassoon) and benjamin nelson (cello).

eli keszler is a composer, artist and multi-instrumentalist based in new york city. in performance, he often plays drums, bowed crotales and guitar in conjunction with his installations. in his ensemble compositions, he uses extended strings, motors, crotales, horns and mechanical devices to create his sound, balancing intense harmonic formations with acoustic sustain, fast jarring rhythm, mechanical propulsion, dense textures and detailed visual presentations. eli has toured extensively throughout europe and the us, performing solo and in collaboration with artists such as phill niblock, aki onda, joe mcphee, loren connors, jandek, roscoe mitchell, anthony coleman, joe morris, steve beresford, c spencer yeh, greg kelley (nmperign), t model ford, ran blake, ashley paul and steve pyne. he has recorded solo releases for labels such as his own rel records, esp-disk' and type (red horse). his installations have appeared at the boston center for the arts and nuit blanche nyc and the shreveport mspc new music festival. he has most recently won the mata composers competition for the 2012 season. eli keszler is a graduate of the new england conservatory in boston where he studied with anthony coleman and ran blake.

the lp is mastered and cut by rashad becker at d&m, in a limited edition of 500 copies, pressed on 140g vinyl and comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve. it is packaged in a pro-press color jacket which itself is housed in a silk screened pvc sleeve with artwork by kathryn politis & bill kouligas.

despite the reference(s) to fahey in his own blurb below, this is about as far-removed from a straight takoma-school outing as you can possibly imagine ; the lengthy a-side piece moves along at an almost feldman-ian pace, with spare interjections of chiming 12-string notes dotting a landscape of grinding, cassette-blurred static that measuredly gains in volume, only to erupt in a fury of mechanical hum (which could very well be an ultra-compressed recording of the very same cassette walkman used in the piece’s construction) ...

on the flip, a ground-hum heavy tone-field is interpreted by the motor of said walkman’s dying voltage-source in a fashion reminiscent of maurizio bianchi’s early 80s tape experiments ... surprisingly, this gives way to a studied modal finger-style piece, showcasing reuben’s formidable “chops” w/o dipping too far into cloying guitarisms or technique-for-technique’s-sake showboating ...

... it’s great to hear this approach coming from someone who’s obviously a “player” ; the process-music & minimalism-inspired flourishes, coupled with the embrace of contemporary tape-label sensibilities make this one of the better blind-sidings of recent times. highly recommended !!!

this debut release features three pieces on guitar from erstwhile fahey devotee reuben son. two of the pieces herein focus heavily on usage of cassette tape as a physical medium, wrought to interact with the guitar in both the audio and the physical domain. utilizing fingerpicking and tabletop guitar methodologies alongside variations on riley’s time lag accumulator, reich’s phase-shifting, and stephen cornford’s for violin, viola and tape, son creates guitar-based music saturated with drone and decay.

hand-assembled edition by the artist, with labels scrawled onto painted cassette shells by fingerpick.

connect with the grace of jesus, "as it is written in the law of the lord, every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the lord;"- luke 2:23. this is nothing but deliberate robbery in the name of the lord. anyone doing this is stabbing jesus againg. of what use is his death then? as for me jesus blood is sufficient! what is the rational behind ministers asking believers to make sacrificial givings to take away the curse of ruben on first born? to my mind, my first son is not ruben and he is redeemed of god. of what use is such ritual giving in faith?

reuben was the first child of jacob and leah, and the founder of the tribe of reuben. when the bible lists the names of jacob's 12 sons, reuben's is listed first. but reuben lost the privileges that traditionally were given to first-born sons because he had an affair with bilhah, who was his father's concubine (genesis 35:22). reuben, however, is noted for some good things. although reuben had a curse on him, the curse does not automatically transfered to you! the blood of jesus has paid the price for all curses and cause of the law. consider it fraudulent if any minister or ministry ever ask you to part with sacrificial offering / seed to remove the curse.
