rene hell / three legged raceviolin petal {auden} b/w whipped secrets” long playing record

  • rene hell - violin petal {auden}

    ace ribeo
    slightly eleven
    plastic demi finish
    exit room 808

  • three legged race - whipped secrets
november 2010 release ; great to finally have some new music from robertthree legged racebeatty (his last, the impeccable “living order / mourning order” set for tone filth was over 2 years ago !!! and even that was a reissue of earlier work) ... his side here is an incredible 3-part suite of gurglingperiodelectronics that retains its melodic charm throughout, even while run through a wringer of home-brew circuits & a fidelity grabbed wholesale via nik pascal’s tractor beam ...

jeff witscher’s side is an epic slice of the real, formatting new phase-aligment vectors, pronounced use of the heartstring-tugging descending line cliché, and at least one morose held-chord weeper (for the ladies) ; all rendered with the spot-on precision that we’ve grown to expect / love ...

comes in a full-colorsplit-sleeve(art is c/o each ; make yr own a & b-sides) with a printed b/w inner-sleeve (that one’s all jeff) ... one of the split records of the year (along with the raglani / outer space on nihilist) ; highly recommended !!!

arbor 111; lp album
rene hell / three legged race violin petal {auden} / whipped secrets

rene hell and three legged race investigate the space where classically outsider musical forms begin to intersect with more popular ones. taking cues from science fiction and early electronic / tape music and translating them through lens of minimal techno and the personal logic of bedroom recording ; both creating something unclassifiable in it’s hybrid form.

rene hell’s four part suite violin petal {auden} follows his recent lp on type with it’s distinct form of digital synthesis and future-concrète; cyclic music expanding and contracting throughout a cybernetic space. the confusion of communication, control source unknownsignals crossed along a technological drift.

robert beatty’s three legged race presents a three part suite, whipped secrets. investigating herein an application of earlyautomaticsynthesizer music manipulated into linear form based song structure. developing softly, the first movement sounds like a loner folk recording from a distant future time ; complete with vocals, staring sad eyed across an open expanse, contemplating the state of things. slowly, this form unravels into a more abstract and ‘automatic’ based territory ; rhythmic and melodic staccato signals possessed with an almost intelligent logic of their own. communication shifts from the man to his machine.

in an edition of 400 copies with glossy jackets featuring images by each artist and printed inner sleeves and center labels designed by jeff witscher

secret abusethe immeasurable gift” long playing record

  • futility
  • grin
  • carefully opening the window

  • the deepest roots
  • must leave sometime
  • light
june 2009 release ; it’s neat how this stuff keeps cycling around - one minute you’re expecting (and ... you get) some fully rectified pedal abuse ... then the next the polar opposite ; bedroom guitar soul-baring straight out of the roy montgomery songbook (listen to the sound-sample) ...

as someone who clearly enjoys both, i’m psyched that we’ve finally arrived at the point in time where it’s not only possible to straddle these two very polar divides, but in fact acceptable ... mr. witscher pulls of both with admirable aplomb ; neither the squared-off drone-noise and decidedly more “friendly” guitar pieces come across as half-measures, but ultimately as components of a greater whole. well done ...

arbor75 secret abuse - “the immeasurable gift” lp

the immeasurable gift” is a testament to cathartic possibilities and the role of creation/release as a means of understanding. recorded throughout the past three years in a variety of locations and personal moments; encapsulated by a common, unrelenting concern. beautifully delicate, elegiac melodies concealed within curtains of dense electronic ambiance reveal themselves like the light at the end of the tunnel; a signifier of the temporary vessel form. balancing recklessness with care and coming to terms with the inevitable; encountering the man on the shoulder, reminding us that we are all just weary travelers.

in an edition of 425 records in full color proprinted cardboard jackets with printed labels and an insert; all design by jeff witscher.

bathetic (usa) #bath028 ep

wet hair / rene hellflowers of light b/w 55 rn gaz” seven inch single record

  • wet hair "flowers of light"

  • rene hell "55 rn gaz"
november 2010 release ; superb split single, offering a track each by these two close-knit iowa city denizens (yes, i know jeff has gone off to vienna, then portland ; but he’ll stay an iowaan in his heart for many years to come) ...

wet hair (i.e. ryan garbes & shawn reed, previously dunebuggy, raccoo-oo-oon) drop a fine, electro-tinged processional (shades of garbes’ recent solo work) all but buried in post-production anti-gloss ... then jeff hits us with what is arguably his most fully-formed statement as rene hell yet, blending “church of anthrax” style electro-organ filigree, burnt suicide-lineage vocals, and white-noise / sheet-rock drums straight out of john bender’s “i don’t remember now / i don’t walk to talk about it” ... highly recommended !!!

rene hell / pete swansonwaiting for the ladies” long playing record

  • pete swanson - self help (15:10)

  • rene hell - glass & voice, in motion (16:04)

    walking in tune
    bending (voice)
    glass (coke)
january 2012 release ; ... no, you’re not seeing double, this is an exact (and i do mean exact, right down to the pressing plant !!!) reissue of the august 2010tour split” lp from jeffrene hellwitscher & pete swanson, offering a side of new music by each, never available in any other way ...

pete storms the beaches first with a clattery, rising wall of rectified pulse-wave fizz & distant banshee vocals, dropping out for several pregnant pauses of almost bbc radiophonic workshop-esque clatter shapes ... the flip offers a trilogy of pieces from jeff ; the first recorded evidence of his recent stint in austria, subtexted “with a glass full of coke and the plastic sniper moon, bend the street taught and walk along in tune” ... each is concerned with a correlated aggregate of chiming, interlocking synth patterns, with a gnarly filtered square-wave framing” the various arpeggiations into endlessly morphing emotive shapes ...

a great record, largely unavailable in its original iteration (we definitely left a few of you hanging back then ; now’s your chance) ... highly recommended !!!

shelter press #001 / pete swanson & rene hell waiting for the ladies

 4 tracks / 31:04 min / 12 inches / 33 rpm / 160grm

520 copies / 2012 / art by rene hell

jeff witscher's followup to the acclaimed "porcelain opera" lp on type finds him taking things even further out from the kosmiche tag he's had pushed on him. the rh side is way more cyberpunk meandering no logic digital musichi-fi goaning landscapes. the pete swanson side is more synth and tape exploration that's his most clean work to date.  layers of primitive wave forms and gunked processing congeal into some sort of open 60s classical synth and shoegaze influenced song-like form.  less oppression, more confusion.

released for the swanson/hell august 2010 tour.
