ramlehswitch hitter b/w the machines of infinite joy” ten inch single record

  • switch hitter

  • the machines of infinite joy
april 2009 release ; first new material from ramleh in over a decade (and in fact the first broken flag release in two ; following bfv 10 :: skullflower’s “form destroyer” lp from 1989) ...

acting here as a “power” trio w/ gary mundy, anthony difranco, and martyn watts, the band gets to task on channeling their inner rage against the machine (no, i’m not joking) ; the non-ironic “go !!!” shouted a few seconds into “switch hitter” should say it all in regards to ramleh’s titanic legacy vs. their contemporary reality (translation :: i’m not so into this, having something of the buyer’s remorse after stocking up on what was to be the band’s “grand return”) ...

the sound-sample should answer any questions you may have. good day ...

switch hitter. / the machines of infinite joy.
10” single / 45rpm
cat no: brv 08-1010 / bfv 11
release date: april 2009

black rose recordings and broken flag are proud to present the new 10” single by the legendary group ramleh. limited to 500 with black and white artwork this is their first new material since 1998 and it doesn’t disappoint. powerful droning intensity, motorik rhythms and warped guitar riffs dominate these two songs with one containing ramleh’s distinctive distorted vocals weaving in and out of this inventive chemistry. “switch hitter” could almost be described as a full on dissonant rock track, but ramleh’s desire for experimentation and improvisation lifts it way above the general rock mindset.

ramleh have been active since the early 1980s, first as one of the uk’s pioneering power electronics groups and then towards the late 80s they, along with skullflower, laid the foundations for the uk’s improvisional noise rock scene. in fact gary mundy from ramleh was also one of the founding members of skullflower (there was an overlapping membership of both bands, yet ramleh always managed to retain their own unique identity regardless of musical genre).

they returned to the live scene last year with well received shows in london (one with whitehouse the other with merzbow), and  new york, whilst a new album release and planned re-issues from their back catalogue are due late 2009 proving they have not lost any of their energy, excitement and ability to explore all possibilities.

gary mundy from ramleh/broken flag returns with a batch of brutal punishing experimental noise guitar insanity

gary mundy from ramleh and the legendary broken flag record label from england returns with a new album by early bf project kleistwahr. as you may have guessed, this is pure experimental noise, tortured guitars et al. this album is brutal atonal expression from a level of creative genius few artists have ever been able to find. as good as anything ever done by fellow noise legends whitehouse, skullflower, wolf eyes, khanate, etc. prepare.

this is part of the "outer bounds of sound" series of limited edition lp's. there were only 300 copies made so it will sell out soon.

december 2009 release ; awesome “return-to-form” power electronics side from gary mundy & anthony di franco’s ramleh (after a hugely disappointing 10” on broken flag / black rose) ...

five tracks of straight synth / bass / electronic / vocal caterwaul in the style of whitehouse and/or the band’s own humble origins ...

valediction
second layer records

after witnessing a whitehouse performance in 1982 gary mundy was inspired to found both the pivotal label broken flag, and ramleh – a power electronics project whose initial, hugely influential recordings and shows were violent sonic outbursts of desperate, confrontational and barely controlled screaming feedback with a slightly psychedelic edge. this first incarnation of ramleh, although rightly considered a seminal project in the power electronics scene, were only active for a mere two years (although much of their released material only surfaced after this period), and in 1984 the project was put on an indefinite hiatus.

mundy, however, was keen to push on and investigate new territories, and ramleh was resurrected a couple of years later as an equally pioneering and influential improvised noise rock project who, along with ‘sister group’ skullflower, proceeded to send seismic tremors through the international noise underground that are still being felt (and perhaps only truly understood) today. in 1997, after a run of boundary-pushing singles and albums, this ‘rock’ version of ramleh was also laid to rest.

however, some five years later, mundy decided to once again return to the project, and ramleh were reborn a second time. at first continuing in an improvised noise rock vein – albeit with a more driving, stripped down sound – and then, in 2008, finally returning to an exploration of their power electronics roots. now we are lucky enough to have both rock and power electronics incarnations of ramleh active concurrently – the former consisting of mundy along with long-term collaborator anthony di franco (ax, ethnic acid, jfk, skullflower etc.) on bass and martyn watts (danielle dax, breathless) on drums; and the latter of just mundy and di franco.

after a new ‘rock’ 10-inch ep co-released earlier this year by black rose recordings and an also resurrected broken flag, second layer records are extremely proud to present valediction - the first all new ramleh album since 1997, and the first new power electronics recordings from the project for 25 years. and yet valediction is no ordinary “power electronics” record, nor is it anything as straightforward as simply a return to their roots. valediction is very much an entity of its own – both consolidating and expanding upon everything ramleh have touched on in the past, but also digging into entirely fresh ground for the band. valediction is, perhaps, ramleh’s most bleakly psychedelic creation so far.
