"three aural interpretations of a drawing by eric lanzillotta" 7" ep
anomalous records nom28

limited edition of 250 copies pressed on clear vinyl and packaged in double-sided 14.5" by 10.5" poster sleeve.

this 33 rpm ep include three sound artists playing a drawing by eric lanzillotta. each artist has a unique, though abstract take on the drawing, which is included in the inside of the poster sleeve. the sounds include the calm physical motions of jeph jerman, the static activity of leif elggren and noise music of ralf wehowsky (sounding a bit like p16.d4 here).

jeph jerman gained attention under the name hands to, but has created his most refined work under his own name. he performs mostly with natural objects (stones, plant parts, feathers, etc) and has collaborated regularly with wally shoup, greg davis, sean meehan, tim barnes, mike shannon, dave knott, eric lunde, and many others. he has had several previous releases on anomalous records, and a new cd of his work will be released by little enjoyer this year.

leif elggren is a pioneering sound, performance, book and installation artist from sweden, as well one of the two kings of elgaland-vargaland. in the last 30 years, he has released a great deal of material on labels such as radium 226.05, anckarström, flykingen, ash international, korm plastics, some, absurd, meeuw muzak, kning disk, ideal recordings, touch and his own firework edition, which has also published many of his book works, such as the legendary "experiment with dreams" done in collaboration with thomas liljenberg.

ralf wehowsky started making music in the neue deutsch welle period of germany history with his band p.d., which later became the group p16.d4. since the dissolution of these groups, he has been recorded largely as a solo artist, though in truth always incorporating collaborations with various friends. over the years he has worked with andrew chalk, bernhard günter, kevin drumm, lionel marchetti, bruce russell, david grubbs, jim o'rourke, and many others.

as a handy, desk-reference set, it can’t be beat ; includes bruce’s pieces on unheralded aotearoan early electronic music composer douglas lilburn, liner notes for birchville cat motel, ralfrlwwehowsky, selections from “logopandocy”, a conversation with alastair galbraith and danny butt, copious musing(s) on walter benjamin & guy debord, and more ...

the short pieces make for great noncommittal reading ; any fan of contemporary semantic discourse in relation to underground musical movements in & out of new zealand (not to mention the borderless musical universe in which russell travels) will be in heaven here ...

left-handed blows’ is a collection of essays written by bruce russell (dead c.) reflecting on sound, improvisation and critical action in the field of culture.

about the title

these are days when no one should rely unduly on his ‘competence’. strength lies in improvisation. all the decisive blows are struck left-handed.

about the author

bruce russell is a practitioner in sound, who since 1987 has been a member of the dead c. this genre-dissolving new zealand trio, mixes rock, electro-acoustics, noise and improvisation in equal measures. he has also been active as a solo artist, and directed two of new zealand’s vanguard labels, xpressway and corpus hermeticum.

he is currently studying at rmit towards a doctorate in sound. this seeks to establish a theory of the social utility of improvised sound work, building on guy debord’s critique of the commodity-spectacle, walter benjamin’s reflections on time and commodity fetishism, and karl marx’s theory of value.

corpus hermeticum (new zealand) #hermes 041 cd

ralf wehowsky / bruce russellsights” compact disc

  • first sight (14:42)
  • second sight (12:00)
  • third sight (18:39)
2004 release ; this was to be the final release from bruce russell’s post-xpressway label corpus hermeticum ... in the intervening 10 years, bruce set his sights on the burgeoning 90s free-noise scene on new zealand’s south island (also issuing classic sides by outsiders like the shadow ring, flying saucer attack, thurston moore, and alan licht) before segueing into issuing early electro-acoustic improv & onkyo sets from the era’s elite ...

the three non-real time improvisations here were started during february 2003 at rlw’s home in eggenstein, the tapes sent back & forth to new zealand for a few months (as with most rlw collaborations) before being mixed down a few months later by ralf, adding tons of post-processes and a fine sense of space/time intervention ... the result is essentially a trio of tape pieces constructed of improvisations (i’m thinking of jacques lejeune’s “petite suite”) ; with the natural timings of their interactions left intact ...

a great note to end on, and a somewhat criminally overlooked entry into both figures’ discographies ...
corpus hermeticum press release...

take two collaborators, one a german sound artist noted for his painstaking micro-engineered computer compositions, the other a new zealand noise terrorist with a reputation for making albums over his morning tea breaks. put them in a basement studio in karlsruhe for three days in february 2003, feed them on coffee and apple juice and let them out to walk in the woods once a day. what do you get? sights, a dramatic collision of two very different but complementary approaches to the same problem -- 'what is this sound?'.

this is a postcard from bruce russell's 2003 european holiday, consisting of three duo improvisations, one recorded after the fact by mail collaboration, and two recorded live in ralf's studio. russell and wehowsky take turns in the studio playing guitar and manipulating a range of tone generating electronics, while the mail collaboration includes clavioline and teaspoons.

the recordings have then been subjected to ralf wehowsky's characteristically careful mixing, where stereo placement and subtle tweaking of the recorded sounds grants a bewitching crystalline sheen to every click and whine. it's the combination of instantaneous composition and carefully-planned post-production that imparts the mystery to this particular session.

at once quite unlike wehowsky's recent work, yet imbued with the same ethos of care and judicious consideration which marks all his productions, sights if anything represents a return to the more carefree jamming practiced by the earliest post-punk incarnations of his first band, pd. in this we see some influence from the slap-dash new zealander, but whereas the average russell production has an unmistakeable air of accident about the fact that anything wound up on tape at all, in this case the beautifully-managed production does perfect justice to the audible excitement captured at the point of creation.

there's a measured care to the way these sounds have been put together, but there's no slavish adherence to any tenets regarding how the results should sound. this is too rocking to be reductionist, too chance-driven to be minimalist, and too noisy to be lumped with any temporarily fashionable schools of micro-improvisation. what you get is the meeting of two well-made-up minds, which have spent upwards of two decades each deciding what the business of sound is all about, and then a long weekend putting the resulting experience into practice.

rlw & titomahlzeit (cd hint 03)

cd comes in great looking chipboard sleeve

hinterzimmers reto mäder (rm74) and german sound artist ralf wehowksy (rlw) have been in contact since many years, resulting in the collaborative cd ‘pirouetten(2006) on north american label ‘crouton’. wehowsky, creator of highly influential industrial improv-group p16.d4 and labelmanager of ‘selektion’, released solo- and collaborative albums on various international labels (table of the elements, beta-lactam ring, streamline, trente oiseaux, anomalous…) since the early nineties.

for his new ambitious project ‘mahlzeit(german for ‘meal’) he worked together with transindustrial toy orchestra (tito), a loose collective of people from hamburg and amsterdam, working in music and other art forms. current members peter kastner, ine ophof and jan van wissen created their part of the conceptual work with their vast collection of toys and kitchen tools, using electronic devices to transform them into bizarre acoustic situations while wehowsky contributes another strange mix of electronics, instruments, voice and body functions.

all in all ‘mahlzeit’ is a collaborative release, but in a special way as some tracks were created by ralf wehowsky using sounds by tito and vice versa, but some were just done by one part of the project, assimilating suggestions from the other part. it mixes electroacoustic composition, early electronic music and bizarre kraut-era avantgarde. the heterogeneous but totally coherent and self-contained ‘mahlzeit’ is not just a great experience and expansion of the musical activity of all involved, but also an album of fine music that is not easy to label..

rm74 - fireproof in 8 parts (cd hint 02)

nothing is holy!

with his fourth solo-release, reto mäder aka rm74 takes us on a fevery missionary journey which is driven by an unholy quest for saturation and leads us into the dark places where tortured souls dwell. unpredictably muckraking in the shoals of timeless abysses, rm74 seeks to kindle the supressed fires of passion. nothing less!

to do justice to this mission, mäder interweaves acoustic instruments such as an organ, a piano, a bassguitar or a harp with analogue and digital treatments into 8 firey and frivolous revelations. the symbiotical relation on "fireproof in 8 parts" is clearly in favour of the beatified instruments, which are re-discovered as liberating tools:

"the dusty organ winds itself ecstatically in purgatory. the rickety piano holds confused and atonal soliloquies. the detuned strings of the bassguitar gleefully dance to the song of wantonness, and the harp calls for the exorcism of charaded awe!"

"fireproof in 8 parts" also contains a bonus-cdr titled "part 9: lofire". this goodie offers additional insight into the works of rm74, concentrating on his lofi-inspired songwriter drafts.

guest musicians: ralf wehowsky (rlw), dave phillips, roger ziegler (herpes ö deluxe), alexei borisov and reverend lester knox (archived by tom smith).

ralf wehowsky/johannes frisch tränende würger
kp 3021 - full length cd

1) johannes frisch
works since the late 1970s as a performer, composer and improviser of contemporary music between experimental rock, free jazz and other openminded styles. on his main instrument, the double bass, he works for more than three decades consequently on an individual expressive language. he played with lot of musicians of the international scene of free improvisation and all experimental fields - among others lol coxhill, maggie nicols, johannes bauer, le quan ninh, paul hubweber, michael vorfeld, misha feigin . compositions for theatre, film and dance theater actual projects: kammerflimmer kollektief; home of the beast, with peter hollinger und helmut bieler-wendt; ensemble sondarc, music for six double basses; rat'n'x; trio with paul wirkus & mikolaj trzaska;. concerts & festivals all over europe.

2) ralf wehowsky
founded the group p.d. (in 1981 renamed p16.d4) and the label wahrnehmungen (in 1982 renamed selektion) in 1980. p16.d4 were one of the most influential groups of experimental industrial music. they developed concepts of materialaustausch long before the term remix was even coined. for their live appearances they were equally at home at punk and no wave festivals as at the holy grails of academic avantgarde like the ferientage neuer musik, darmstadt. since the early 90s wehowsky worked under his own name (rlw). the quiet, highly complex style of composition, based on artifacts of instrumental and electronic lateral noises, evolving out of his collaboration with bernhard gnter was influential for numerous artists in the fields of electronic and improvised music. some reflections on his work can be found on tulpas, a 5cd- box-set, featuring more than 50 artists performing their versions of rlw pieces (incl. jim o rourke, brume, achim wollscheid, toshiya tsunoda, john duncan, antanas jasenka, ryoji ikeda, john watermann a.o.). the new decennium started with a surprise for many as first releases showed a new approach of integrating improvised music and composition (as can be found on the cds views and sights, the latter w/ long-time collaborator bruce russell).

3) tränende würger
is based on free improvisations by the frisch/wehowsky duo, reworked with electro-acoustic means. the compositional process did not intend to mask the nonlinear nature of the improvisations. quite on the contrary their organic character has been emphasized by crystal- clear sharpening of details. you ll find complex structures and dark atmospheres, not unlike those on some p16.d4-, this heat- or mnemonists- releases, though absolutely rooted in the 21st century. beauty and posoning are not far from each other.

'tränende würger' comes in a plastic bag, 15x15cm with the artwork on six seperate sheets, dealing with poisenious plants.

sirr | cd 025

released 02.2006

the i.k.k.-project started in 1794, when christoph schmid wrote the lyrics for ihr kinderlein kommet, using a melody by contemporary composer johann abraham peter schulz. it was performed soon after in thanhausen an der mindel for the first time. in 2001, a few weeks before xmas, i recorded my daughter sonja (aged 5 then) singing some of her favourite xmas tunes.

wonderful recordings. her singing is full of emotional power and she even hits the right notes from time to time. the interesting moments are when her voice is moving around those notes. instead of burying those recordings in the archive i came back to them soon after, because jos moers (the owner of the label meeuw muzak) was asking me to contribute to a series of xmas 7"s he does once every year. so i recorded one for him early in 2002 for 2003’s yearly event: merry merry. side 2 has a funny piece composed from a transformed ihr kinderlein kommet.

when the 7" was done i had the impression that the transformed sounds had a quality of their own, so i used them for further transformations, as well as to compose a new piece of about 15 minutes: i.k.k. – purpurscharlachrot. following my inclination for collaborative works i thought that this material could be of interest, not only for me, but also for other artists to work with. so i prepared a cd-r with the existing versions and some basic material from the piece. pieces have been submitted by dan warburton, andrew deutsch, chris halliwell, strotter inst., stephen vitiello and frisch/rainey/wehowsky.

...

ralf wehowsky

founder of the group p.d. (1981 renamed p16.d4) and the label wahrnehmungen (1982 renamed selektion) in 1980. p16.d4 was one of the most influential groups in experimental industrial music. they developed concepts of material exchange long before the term «remix» was even coined. for their live appearances they were equally at home in punk and no wave festivals and at the holy grails of academic avantgarde like the internationale ferienkurse für neue musik, darmstadt.since the early 1990s wehowsky works under his own name (rlw). his quiet, highly complex style of composition – based on artifacts of instrumental and electronic sound – is influential for numerous artists in the fields of electronic and improvised music. some reflections on his work can be found on tulpas, a 5cd-box-set, featuring more than 50 artists performing their versions of his pieces (jim o´rourke, brume, achim wollscheid, toshiya tsunoda, john duncan, antanas jasenka, ryoji ikeda, john watermann and others).

his recent work embraces musique concrète improvisée (with bruce russell, and johannes frisch, among others) as well as projects based on extended material exchange (i.k.k.).

early w 5: grauzeit
rlw

songs from under the floorboards is proud to present this gem from the archives of ralf wehowsky, aka rlw, founder of the selektion label (a major inspiration for my starting intransitive) and the legendary german industrial/noise band p16.d4 (a major early and lasting influence on my own music).

grauzeit features a previously unreleased session from october 1980 and two added studio improvisations that would appear in edited form on wer nicht arbeiten will soll auch nicht essen!, p16.d4 s debut cassette album. the band, which includes a young achim scepanski (later to found the mille plateaux and force inc techno labels) on synth, played a strange blend of gray noise, psychedelic improvisation, and industrial dub provocation that still sounds unhinged today.

rlw and his colleagues (friends from school, and a temporarily-out-of-the-hospital mental patient who happened to be in the audience at an early concert) made a dada / jazz / punk racket in stark contrast to the fashionable new wave scenes in berlin and hamburg at the time. they would rapidly evolve into an art collective that would create installations, write and publish books, produce records and cds, and instigate an international network of cassette-trading collaborators at a time when self-publishing on tape was itself a radical political act.

cd - 4 pages digipack - 1000 copies - 2000

...

ralf wehowsky (rlw) was founding member, and most important conspirator in p16d4.

peter duimelinks and roel meelkop were members of thu20.

profitable postal collaboration (or each one composes from another one's material) and between three current figures of electroacoustic musics. stratified resonances, shocks of sounds like tectonic plates, brutal ruptures opening on different spaces. a formal and structural work of the most interestings.

2nd in this series of... 2... lps, uncovering growths on the teenage-and-beyond mind of mr. ralf wehowsky (of p16.d4, selektion label, etc...)
swill radio press release...
volume two in a swill radio series of lp's documenting the early work of ralf wehowsky (aka rlw). as with volume one, a slightly different version of this lp was originally released on cassette by wahrnehmungen (later renamed selektion) in the early 80's. this is a much more band-oriented release than volume 1. a number of tracks were recorded live and the mood is aggressive throughout. this is a fantastic neue deutsche welle document. if it had been released on lp, it would be legendary. it still is.

avatar press release...

ohmix

a work by:
artistes variés

to publicize the audio collection accumulated by ohm editions between 1993 and 1998, avatar asked eight composers to extract, transform and remix bits and entire pieces whatever way they wanted.

the result is obviously one of very different approaches and varied listening experiences. through ohmix, avatar, as the name of the centre indicates, metamorphoses, changes itself and rematerializes with new pieces. from ralf wehowsky to alexandre st-onge, each reading is a taking-aim, an angle of attack, a posture that comes across like a meeting, a rendezvous of sound. the interweavings are amplified sharings, interpretations enriched by the fine-tuning of each sound sensibility.

ohmix is a weaving of related but dispersed trends. for several years, a number of artists have been creating a new genre by using the sounds of other artists for their own creations and fishing from assorted discs to reconstruct them into a music that is unprecedented. ohmix sees itself as contributing to the history of avatar and of ohm editions.

ohmix was broadcast in november 2001 on the french-language radio service of the cbc, la chaîne culturelle, on le navire night, a program produced by hélène prévost.

2003 release ; this is... by far... the most interesting record-object i’ve been able to stock via mms thusfar (buddha machine :: ha!) ... what ships as two cds and a three-inch cd-rom inside a resealable plastic display-bag (left) in fact opens up to be an inflatable möbius-strip / objét d’art that you assemble and inflate yourself (with the included red straw no less), then display prominently on your mantlepiece ... voila ::

on top of all that, the two audio-discs are rife with excellent, exclusive material from a who’s who of the international sound-art scene ... plus the 3” cd-rom explains the project in more detail and contains artist bios & links & whatnot ... just plain amazing ... no collection should be without !!!

korm plastics press release...
various artists - 'epitaph for john'
kp 3016 full length cd

over the course of his life john watermann worked with almost every conceivable artistic medium. in many ways, he was the epitome of the "total artist"; almost every element of his life being in some way his own artistic project.

as a young man in his native germany he worked as a photographer and documentary filmmaker, also etching, painting and writing. his experience as a youth in germany in the second world war influencing his work from then right through until his death.

following his move to australia watermann worked as jeweller, opening a number of shops in sydney with his longtime australian partner barbara heath (an accomplished jeweller in her own right) and meanwhile continued to write, paint and even sculpt. eventually, after traveling the east coast of australia in a self-built sailing boat, watermann settled in brisbane and began to produce his music.

he first released his music in 1989 in the form of the album "warmth is the fifth room". like most of his releases, the cassette appeared in a run of very few copies on his own label "nightshift", and was consequently almost impossible to find.

over the next 10 years he released numerous albums and contributed to a number of compilations, both under his own name as a solo artist, in collaboration with others (such as merzbow) and under a number of pseudonyms (including radio mull, spinal machine and total disease). also, apart from his music, in the 1990s he created an interactive cd-rom work "rose is a rose" and published the webzine "lean yellow supporting".

sadly, on april 2nd 2002 john watermann died suddenly of an infection resulting from his ongoing treatment for cancer. having in the final year of his life returned to painting and writing (alongside a burgeoning interest in cooking), he still had vast plans for future projects.

among these unfulfilled projects were plans to collaborate with frans de waard on a new release. although only preliminary discussions on the collaboration took place and watermann never completed any work towards the project, watermann's source material that was to be the basis of the work now serves as a basis for this tribute release.

despite his vast artistic output, watermann has been known almost exclusively for his music and even then his work remains largely undiscovered, perhaps for no other reason than its sheer unavailability. in many ways watermann could be considered a classic example of the artists' artist, his work influencing many far more prominent sonic alchemists. and perhaps then this release serves as a record of watermann and his influence, documenting the respect he reserved from his peers and, hopefully, introducing his work to a new audience.

- ben byrne

this cd contains the original soundwork sent to frans de waard by john watermann, reworkings thereof by asmus tietchens, ralf wehowsky, merzbow and freiband.

march 2010 release ; reprising his conceptual covers-record idea(ls - see the “la bamba” travesty) dennis tyfus delivers with this sprawling set of irreverent version(ing)s of stan free’s majestic 1972 moog bleep-splatter classic “popcorn” ...

so many great / irritating moments herein it’s hard to even single out a few, but i have to hand it to olson’s plunderphonics 101 version (listen to the sound-sample ... sabbath ? the stones ? gaga ? check, check, checkmate) ... but then again some of the new(er) names here turn in world-class work, and the whole thing eventually reeks of a kind of love & respect for gershon, rather than a kind of anti-manifesto ...

comes wrapped in klassische dennis xerox-warble, with a nice insert & funny liners from carlo ; the best ...

ue82
popcorn
2x comp lp

a follow up to last years' la bamba drama compilation, which annoyed the shit out of everyone that ever put it on, and made in conjunction with the ue popcorn night(mare), a night where over 30 people played a live cover version of gershon kingsley's banger from 1969!

this double comp is the sweetest cherry on the cake, it should have been a single lp, but in a over-enthausiastic mood i kept inviting people (thinking noone would actually send something in). the versions vary from literal covers to vague interpretations to kitchen princess styled cooking lessons by pavel büchler, hair stylistics with takuma watanabe, rlw, kian sandalen, burning star core, dsr lines, evil moisture, nuslux, raionbashi, hetero skeleton, vomgrill, helm, attempt, helicoptere sanglante, dracula lewis, christophe piette, kip prims, white circle crime club, jacques beloeil, spykes, cryptic report, autistik youth, remörk, miaux, amon dude v, fantamatres, ali mio feat sultan steven, rani bageria and hanno schnegg, blood stereo, my land and lion, family battle snake, three legged race, daniel de wereldvermaarde botanicus, rock and roll jackie & nour mobarack, lucas abela, christopher leeger & kevin blechdom, heatsick, astral social club, tarp and blaastaal!

comes in a vague coverdesign with liner notes by carlo steegen !
