following the much loved nova scotian arms / motion sickness of time travel split lp on aguirre, here's the second collaborative lp by the couple from winterville, georgia. in a little over three years, the duo that comprise quiet evenings – grant and rachel evans – have become two of the most prolific and active artists in the american underground. each also has solo projects: grant most recently under his own name as well as crippling and rachel as motion sickness of time travel. between those as well as quiet evenings, they’ve amassed well over 50 releases for various labels in various editions. they also co-run the hooker vision label, clocking up a similar amount of releases for other kindred spirits.

on impressions both sides offer superrepetitivedronework in the highest form. outer-space that balances a slow pace with an incredibly intense inertia to evolve immediately, yet gracefully. with minimal instrumentation of guitars and synthesizers the pieces on impressions captivate the listener into the world they've created. far from the realm of pure ambient drift, subtle forces build within their disarming restraint and provide a stunning balance between light and shade. quiet evenings inhabit a ghostly space of unique elegance. this is a duo that can carry their craft well beyond standard shapes.

nova scotian arms has concocted a sprawling, sophisticated catalog of winding compositions and dizzying drones. grant evans, who is also 1/2 of quiet evenings and co-curator of the hooker vision label, is the brains behind the entire operation. throughout numerous releases he has shown a consistent ability to keep listeners guessing as he explores endless sonic territories. with cult spectrum, evans is drowning himself in a hazy aural sea.

like much of his work, there is a very distinct mood on cult spectrum. this is funereal music that is stretched to its breaking point. distant galaxies are buried underground in a delicate mix of sounds that are as cosmic as they are organic. this duality is at play straight-off with the masterful opener, "gathering/composition." soaring in crystal skies on beds of hiss, each strained note from evans' rhodes piano that emerged from the murk is an anchor keeping the song and the mood gravity-stricken. it works to perfection, drawing in the listener immediately.

tape loops and radio interference deliciously muddy the waters of cult spectrum. the 16+ minute burner, "emulsion," combines all those and more into a cacophonous stew. acoustic guitars circle around and die in the swirling synthetic drain. each wave emerges in stages as evans shows considerable compositional skill in the way the piece is put together. with "overcast strumming (1st delay)" comes a melancholic, skyward glance. electronic corridors take shape and find a simple beauty through tonal dichotomies. blurred drones are puncuated by bursts of fuzz, working in tandem to find that sonic bliss.

if cult spectrum is nova scotian arms' biggest stage and loudest statement then the message is coming through loud & clear. grant evans is a force to be reckoned with. this is the sound of dissonance sculpted and shaped into something far greater and leaves its mark long after the final, ghostly seconds of "hearse overdub (decomposition)" fade away. evans is digging a tunnel, heading straight for the sun

comes wrapped in a neat trompe-l’oeil sleeve with art by all three (plus jeffry “xiphiidae” astin) that captures just the right levels of disorientation & ease as conjured by the music ... lovely record.

in celebration of rotifer's 50th and hooker vision's 100th releases, the two labels have teamed up to offer a commemorative split lp between the labels' flagship bands, seziki tetrasheaf and quiet evenings.

the a side begins with seziki's lost and found shuffle of mildewed grooves. hazy recollections. deep humidity.

on the flip, qe cool things down a bit with a bubbling hymn to the ocean and her mysteries. lost in waves. floating.

in 2010 rachel evans released "seeping through the veil of the unconscious", an expansive, magic trick of a cassette which captivated an unsuspecting american cassette underground and made dedicated fans instantly. digitalis released fine editions of the "seeping..." as well as the acclaimed follow-up "luminaries and synastries" on lp which packed an equally potent punch. since then much anticipation has been created from her work with husband grant evans, including a split lp on aguirre records in late 2011 and various releases as duo quiet evenings

evans has since been hard at work on an expansive, definitive 2xlp project, carefully arranging sounds to create immense, alchemical side-long tracks which push the boundaries of the project into new territory. these incredible new highs are documented in a clear, spacious fidelity where cerebral sounds gently flow and wash through the stereo field creating a beautiful deep listening situation. big changes in sound and scope are evident; a shift from the murky, mysterious haze of the older recordings into a highly addictive concentrate of airy tones and gem-like glow, each track forming a universal sky-map . there is, however, no loss of mystique. one of evans most charming elements is her ability to create a divine magnetism, and to capture this very magic unfiltered, raw and uncomprimised. very few have the capability to create this powerful energy and make is as accessible as evans does.

this full-length definitive album is a high water mark in the motion sickness of time travel discography. an album masterfully crafted with ambition, crystal clear vision and dedicated focus. mastered for vinyl by lawrence english and cut for vinyl at dubplates and mastering.
